Videos Duties Help * Orders and procures drugs; receives drug shipments, maintains pharmacy storeroom and hospital drug stocks; properly stores drugs. * Enters the correct drug, strength, dosage form and quantity into the patient's computerized medical chart. Process prescription claims through the Point of Sale software. Repackages drugs in usable prescription size, maintains control of logs as required for quality control. * Prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy. Interprets doctor's orders; obtains necessary ingredients; prepares and labels the final product. Assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions (i.e., typing, filling prescriptions in written and oral forms, etc.). * Operates and cares for various pharmacy equipment; assists pharmacy staff in maintaining cleanliness of main pharmacy, pharmacy storage, and other drug storage areas. OR Education and Training For GS-3: Successful completion of 1 year of study that included a course in biology, chemistry, or physics. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study in pharmacy or pharmacy technology that included at least 12 semester hours in courses in the care, storage, distribution, and preparation of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate laboratory work. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. The incumbent performs various pharmacy-related duties for the Pharmacy Department, such as maintaining medication supplies, ordering drugs from the supply department, and stocking medications. Scope of Work: This position is located in the Tohono O'odham Nation Sells Hospital or Health Care Centers within the service area. Incumbent provides pharmacy services as directed or assigned by a Clinical Pharmacist. The incumbent is under the immediate supervision of the Clinical Pharmacist. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below): Order drugs from the supply department, except class II narcotics. Responsible for keeping the supply of medications needed on hand. Keeps narcotic files on nursing units and emergency room up to date Prepare off-schedule drug requisitions as necessary and checks the status of backorder drugs. Perform some clerical duties in the absence of clerical staff. Responsible for collecting such data as may be required and writing such reports as may be assigned. Shelves and stores all incoming drugs and supplies, assuring that all items requiring special handling receive the same and maintain proper stock rotation. Provides warehousing activities maximize efficiency, so storage space is used with maximum efficiency per the pharmacy storage plan. Stocks and maintains the emergency drug carts by utilizing a prepared checklist. Maintain an adequate working shelf stock of drugs in the pharmacy's dispensing area. Inventories and maintains the night drug cabinet stock in the emergency room. Responsible for maintaining the pharmacies and storage areas in a neat, clean, and orderly condition. Independently fills inpatient and outpatient drug requisitions from prepackaged stock containers and original stock containers. Check all nursing drug storage areas for expired drugs. Prepackage drugs from bulk containers to smaller outpatient dispensing units for use in filling prescriptions. Strip packaged medications used in the operation of the inpatient unit dose drug distribution system. Responsible for printing all labels used in the prepackaging process. Counts and pours drugs used in the filling of a prescription. Routinely calls patients to the outpatient pharmacy consultation rooms. Prepare sterile intravenous admixtures and chemotherapeutic agents; light checks all intravenous solutions arid admixtures issued through the pharmacy. Bulks compound pharmaceutical preparations as such as ointment, solutions, etc. Operate inpatient and outpatient pharmacies' computers, the hospital computer system, and PC's. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician supports the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients served by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Assists registered pharmacists in performing nonprofessional duties in an institutional pharmacy; receives, inspects, stores, and fills orders for pharmaceutical supplies. Nature of work involves continuous close attention to detail and some potential exposure to hazardous substances. Under supervision, the Pharmacy Technician performs the following essential job functions: Accurately prepares unit dose medications, compounds a variety of pharmaceuticals under the supervision of a Pharmacist, including intravenous admixtures according to proper aseptic technique and in accordance with, professional standards and departmental policies and procedures, in order to maintain required levels of supply and to provide patients with needed medications; Prepares or repackages drugs and pharmaceuticals under the supervision of a Pharmacist, in amounts needed to fill written orders/prescriptions in order to provide patients with needed medication and to maintain required levels of supply; Prepares medication labels based on written orders from physicians and other professional staff according to California State Board of Pharmacy requirements; Records billing information for accurate and appropriate billing of patients for medications, involving use of desktop computer keyboard for entering medication orders and billing information; Maintains drug and pharmaceutical stock levels by counting and checking stores of drugs and pharmaceuticals against standard, pre-set stock levels, ordering and verifying deliveries against invoices to ensure accuracy; Inspects and stores delivered stock in the pharmacy patient care areas by sorting and shelving them for optimal retrieval; Delivers, retrieves, and exchanges medications and pharmaceutical items to and from specified areas, or for dispensing by cart to ensure that clinical and patient needs are met; Provides information to patients, public and other healthcare providers within the scope of Technician activities through a variety of methods, including personal contact, at the Pharmacy window, in patient care areas, and by telephone or video. This does not include medication counseling or providing drug information; Orients and trains new personnel, pharmacy students, or others on departmental policies and procedures appropriate to a Technician's scope of work; Uses, maintains, and troubleshoots automated dispensing equipment or relevant pharmacy-related software and other equipment necessary for pharmacy operations; Accurately prepares, dispenses, and documents controlled substance orders, and maintains accurate inventory records. The 2409 Pharmacy Technician also performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications 1. Experience: One (1) year (equivalent to 2,000 hours) of experience (in the last 5 years) assisting in the preparation of drug and pharmaceutical items in a licensed pharmacy; AND 2. License: Possession of a valid Pharmacy Technician License/Registration issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy. (Please attach a copy) License status must be "Current" according to search.dca.ca.gov/ Substitution: Possession of a valid Intern Pharmacist License/Registration issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy may substitute for the required experience and license. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Possible Special Conditions (some positions may require the following): One (1) year of experience assisting in the preparation of drug and pharmaceutical items in a licensed inpatient pharmacy within the last five years. Six (6) months of experience in database application support, operational support, software installation and maintenance, and performance tuning for multi-departmental and enterprise systems.
