Overview

Responsibilities
Pick up students at stops along established routes and drop them off at school and designated after-school location
Transport students and faculty to special events, such as field trips or sporting event

Obey traffic laws, safety procedures, and transit regulations

Follow a specific timetable while on duty
Assist passengers with disabilities to get on the bus
Assist with school monitoring or other tasks as requested by supervisor

Objective
To assist in providing safe transportation of students.
Essential Functions
Maintains good student conduct while on the bus with driver's support
Assists students as they enter and exit the schoolbus for curb-to-curb service as needed

Responsible for securing/un-securing wheelchairs while the driver operates the lift, using tie- downs, belts, safety restraints, and any other related supportive equipment needed for transporting students
Assists the driver with the maintenance of a clean bus interior; wiping down the seats with disinfectant, inspecting and securing seatbelts and other safety equipment, putting up the windows, etc. while on duty

Additional Functions
Attends department in-service meetings and all recertification classes
Reads and follows instructions; and understands written and oral instructions

Drivers are required to operate various vehicles depending on need, with the primary vehicle being a 14-passenger bus with a GVW of less than 26,001. The shuttle service operates from late August to early May (with a summer layoff). The driver is responsible for transporting students to and from designated locations on campus and within the Charleston community according to the established schedule. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Preferred Qualifications:

Pass an Illinois written schoolbusdriver permit test (valid for 1 year). Pass a behind the wheel exam (valid for 180 days) in the type of vehicle you will be driving. Pass a physical examination (valid for 90 days), including drug and tuberculosis testing. Affirm under penalty of perjury that you have not made a false statement or knowingly concealed a material fact in any application for permit. Complete an initial classroom training course (valid for one year) administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. Demonstrate the ability to exercise reasonable care in the operation of a First Division vehicle in accordance with the requirements. Be physically able to safely operate a First Division vehicle. Not have been under an order of court supervision or convicted of two or more serious traffic offenses within the previous 12-month period, nor be convicted of two or more serious traffic offenses during any 12-month period prior to the date of your application. Not have been under an order of court supervision or convicted of reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs or reckless homicide while operating of a motor vehicle within three years of the date of application. Pass an Illinois specific and FBI criminal background check, whereas fingerprint results are valid for one year. Consent in writing to the release of results of reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing by the employer of the applicant to the Secretary of State. Not have, through the unlawful operation of a motor vehicle, caused an accident resulting in the death of any person. Not have been afflicted with or suffering from any mental disability or disease within the last five years.
