Job Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The CMA performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice, they assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.
Administrative Duties:
Answer telephones
Greet patients
Update and file patient medical records
Fill out insurance forms
Handle correspondence
Schedule appointments
Arrange for hospital admissions
Arrange for laboratory services
Handle billing and bookkeeping
Clinical Duties:
Assist medical and nursing staff in a variety of tasks including:
Taking medical histories and recording vital signs
Explaining treatment procedures to patients
Preparing patients for examinations and procedures
Assisting the physician during the examination and procedures
Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
Perform basic laboratory tests on the premises
Dispose of contaminated supplies Sterilize medical instruments.
Promote patient/family understanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in the plan of care, and document in patient record
Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
Authorize drug refills as directed Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy
Draw blood
Prepare patients for x-rays, tests and procedures

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Level I -- Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required.
Level II -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required.

Responsibilities:

What you will do:
Clinical responsibilities:
The CMA collects medical histories, monitors vital signs, explains treatments to patients, and prepares them for exams and procedures.
Patient care support may include assisting medical staff, gathering and preparing lab samples, conducting basic lab tests, performing EKGs, removing sutures/staples, changing dressings, educating patients and families about care, and documenting in records.
Additional tasks include disposing of contaminated supplies, processing instruments, cleaning medical equipment, calling in prescriptions, preparing and giving medications as instructed by the doctor, and handling prescription refills.
Performs other clinical tasks as assigned by the doctor.
Administrative responsibilities:
The CMA greets patients, answers calls, schedules appointments (including arrival in Maestro Care), checks out patients, and handles referral scheduling. The UNCMC Inpatient Float Pool is seeking Patient Sitters (Per Diem) to join their team. This position may float to the Medical Center in Chapel Hill, and the Hospital at Hillsborough in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Must be able to work a minimum of 36 hours in a 6 week scheduling period with preferred scheduling. Shifts can be 4, 8, 10 or 12 hours per day. There is a requirement for 2 weekend shifts and at least one (1) 12-hour or two (2) 8-hour night shifts every scheduling period.
This position requires the ability to attend hospital orientation. The orientation schedule is typically Monday & Tuesday - Virtual (self-pace) and Wednesday mandatory in-person from 1pm to 5 pm.
The UNC Float/Flex Pool is made up of approximately 300 RNs and NAs/CSTs/Patient Sitters. We float to all 75 units of the main campus (except the OR and NCCC) and Hillsborough campus to help staff when they are short-handed. This position floats throughout the hospital working one on one care or staffing on any unit in the hospital. Must be flexible and interested in caring for patients in all service areas from emergency department to critical care and all ages from infant to geriatrics.
