Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7pm to 7am
Work Performed
Participate as a neutral party in the role as conduit of information that must flow between Duke staff and the International or Domestic patient/visitors. Ensure that information pertaining to the patient's outpatient services, hospitalization, (i.e. advance directives, consents from treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments and Health Care Education) are accurately communicated.The patient's questions/concerns regarding this information is to be appropriately addressed and documented per Risk Management Directives. Provide interpreter services, and convey the exact message as opposed to summarizing the information in a way that is subjective. Provide required documentation as identified by the International Patient Center. Maintain accurate daily records on all requests for service as well as the provision of services. Maintain accurate and timely documentation within program database. Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services; notify Supervisor of any issues that may be problematic for patients or Duke staff. Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance professional role of International Medical escort. Ensure that all policies and procedures related to process, service, and employee work rules are followed. Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitor issues on non-English speaking patients/families/escorts. Participate in on call coverage to provide interpretation/translation services during non-business hours and business hours as assigned. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Overview
Purpose Statement/Position Summary:
The Language and Cultural Specialist II (Spanish Interpreter), under general supervision, provide interpreting services in a culturally sensitive manner to facilitate communication and the relaying of medical information between speakers of different languages at CHLA; and provide written translations as required in patient encounters such as translation of medical instructions and medication schedules, and any hospital related administrative correspondence with patients/families, including information, education and documentation materials. Collaborates with other health care team members in the delivery of care. Complies with applicable office and hospital policies and procedures particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent. Also assists department with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff interpreters.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:
* 2+ years' experience interpreting and translating in a healthcare setting, including experience working with the community and/or a target language population with a diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
* Competency in written and verbal communication skills in English and the designated foreign language (Spanish).
* Ability to translate and interpretmedical terminology.
* Experience interpreting and translating with patients at a full range of developmental and educational levels.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related discipline preferred.
* Completion of a minimum of 40 hour Healthcare Interpreter training.
* For spoken language interpreters: Healthcare Interpreter National Certification or highest national credentialing (where applicable by language) through CCHI or a national organization.

Job Summary
Responsible for accurate oral interpretation and written translation with an emphasis on medically related communication between the limited English proficient (LEP) speaker and the healthcare team. Sensitive to cultural perception and use language appropriate to the educational and linguistic sophistication of both the client and the healthcare provider.
Essential Functions
Responds to requests for interpretation and translation services in the health care setting.
Interprets information regarding the patient's and family's medical needs. This may include consent for treatment, history and physical assessment, treatment recommendations, patient education, instructions for follow-up and future appointments.
Interprets as accurately and directly as possible given the idiomatic differences of languages, and maintains the spirit of the original communication, suspending judgment and making no comment.
The interpreter will make every effort to ensure the patient and the healthcare provider understands questions, answers, instructions, and other information transmitted by the speaker.
Assists health care providers in understanding the patient's culture, especially as it relates to health service interactions. This includes nonverbal communications, health practices, and social relationships.
Strive to develop a relationship of trust and respect at all times with the patient by adopting a caring, attentive, but discreet and impartial attitude toward the patient, and his/her questions, concerns, and needs.
Abide by the Atrium Health Code of Conduct for Interpreters. He/she will follow privacy standards at all times.
Translate basic written information as needed by clinical staff using accepted policy and procedures as requested. This may include discharge instructions.
Responsible to promote a safe environment and perform all work related responsibilities in a safe manner.

Physical Requirements
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting and reaching. Must lift a minimum of 10 pounds to shoulder height. Must speak English and Spanish in simple, understandable terms and have an intact sense of sight and hearing. Must be able to be mobile within the entire healthcare provider system.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
Bachelors degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Knowledge of medical terminology and/or work experience in a healthcare setting is preferred. Demonstrated oral fluency and written skills in English and Spanish by successful completion of Language Assessment. Computer literacy, ability to use a word processor, and ability to learn computer software applications specific to the role of the interpreter. Good organizational and time management skills are essential. Must be able to cope with interruptions, varying personalities and cultural diversity, changing priorities, irregular hours and demanding clients.

SUMMARY:
APHCV expects all Clinic Operations (CO) Staff to be a part of the revenue cycle process that contributes to the optimization of capturing, management and collection of patient service revenue.
As APHCV is in the business to serve patients APHCV is committed to the prevention of patient centric care at all level, from the CO Call Center Operator, Front Office and MedicalInterpreters (and beyond). This position helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse patient consumers by providing interpretation for medical services and non medical services such as enrollment and other benefit programs.
APHCV expects all employees to participate in APHCV's emergency response operations per our emergency policies and procedures.
APHCV requires all staff to comply with Standards of Conduct and Compliance Program related policies and procedures. Such compliance is part of this position's performance evaluation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Support Service:
Provide intake and assist in financial screening and Health History intake for limited English proficient patients.
Provide interpretation at various points of patient interaction to support clinic operations such as scheduled patient visits with providers and patients.
Call patients 2 days before their appointment to remind them of their appointment.
Provide either interpretation or instruction at classes for patients on various health topics.
Retrieve telephone messages and contact patients in a timely manner in response to voicemails left by patients.
Contact and follow up with patients who no-showed for their medical appointment(s) in accordance with the “No Show Follow Up” procedure. Document such patient contact in EPM or EHR (Telephone Template).
Forward patient's concern and feedback to appropriate personal within APHCV for resolution and optimization of clinic efficiency.
Work with clinic operation and medical staff to facilitate efficient patient flow.
Participate in data collection and verify advanced access data as a special project as well as regular day to day activity.
Assist with data collection for clinic performance measures.
Call patients with abnormal lab results, etc (tasked by triage nurse, providers, and etc.). Document such calls made in NG EHR (Telephone Template).
Schedule future appointments, reschedule or cancel appointments when necessary.
Submit quality of care and productivity reports to Supervisor, if any.
Task triage nurses and referral nurses and also respond to the various tasks accordingly.
Change and update primary care providers for patients according to the assignment.
Create and deactivate the alert in NG EPM.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/Clinic Operations Manager.
Translation:
Translate vital documents (clinic documents, outreach materials, health education materials and etc.) in timely manner.
Perform back translation or proofread the translation to evaluate the accuracy of translation
Type set or coordinates with other staff to type set the translated material.

General Description of the Job Class
Perform a variety of interpretation and translation services to assist patients receiving care within the Duke Health System.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
* Provide interpreter services, and convey the exact message as opposed to summarizing the information in a way that is subjective. Provide documentation as required.
* Ensure that information pertaining to the patient's outpatient services, hospitalization, (i.e. advanced directives, consents from treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments and health care education) are accurately communicated.
* Participate as a neutral party as a conduit of information that flows between Duke staff and the patient/visitor.
* The patient's questions/concerns regarding this information are to be appropriately addressed and documented by Risk Management Directives.
* Ensure all encounters are recorded in Service Hub. Maintain accurate and timely electronic documentation of all service requests and provisions.
* Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services; notify the Supervisor of any issues that may be problematic for patients or Duke staff.
* Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance professional role. Ensure all policies and procedures related to process, service, and employee work rules are followed. Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitors.
* Participate in on-call coverage to provide interpretation/translation services during non-business hours and business hours as assigned.
* Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
High school Diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of conversation/translation competency testing in a secondary language. Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
Experience
Previous experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
National Interpreter Certification (NIC) is required for ASL interpreters.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Ability to work with diverse populations from various economical backgrounds and age groups.
* Ability to work as an effective member of a dedicated team.
* Ability to work in a fast paced Health Care environment with a variety of customer service needs.
* Accurate and appropriate interpretation skills at all times.
* Current N.C. Driver's License with driving record suitable to Duke Van operations and corporate risk management, if applicable.
