NATURE OF WORK

The Preschool Teacher Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in implementing a high-quality educational program aligned with the NC Child Care Division. This role contributes to the growth, development, and safety of preschool children by promoting a nurturing, stimulating, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. The Assistant Teacher helps implement daily classroom routines and wrap-around care services while fostering positive family engagement and ensuring a safe and clean environment.
Essential Duties
* Support the Lead Teacher in planning and carrying out daily activities, both indoors and outdoors.
* Supervise children at all times to ensure a safe and engaging environment.
* Assist in the preparation and serving of meals and snacks in accordance with health standards.
* Establish and maintain positive relationships with children, families, and teaching team members.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and child-friendly classroom and center environment.
* Demonstrate knowledge of child development, and NC Childcare Division Standards.
* Ensure compliance with Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) guidelines.
* Fulfill the Lead Preschool Teacher role in their absence, as needed.
Additional Duties
* Perform duties as assigned by the Center Director in support of program goals and the College's mission.
Supervisory Responsibilities
* This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may direct children's activities and support volunteers or student interns under the supervision of the Preschool Lead Teacher or Director.
Education and Experience:
* Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education or currently enrolled in an Early Childhood Associate's program in good standing.
* Demonstrated understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
* Physical ability to frequently bend, stoop, and lift materials.
* Appropriate verbal/interpersonal skills.
* Willingness to learn procedures and regulations related to early childhood education and care.
* Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
Specialized Training:
* Training in child development, and/or ECERS preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
* Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field.
* Must meet NC Division of Child Development & Early Education (DCDEE) requirements for Child Care center staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate instructional strategies.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
* Skill in implementing lesson plans and supporting classroom activities.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and sanitation regulations for early childhood settings.
* Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
* Knowledge of NC Pre-K Program and regulatory guidelines.
Institutional Competencies
* Following the procedure manuals and the Child Development Center/PCC policies
* Possess knowledge of written standards and procedures, and the ability to read, interpret, and follow policy and procedural manuals.
Physical Demands
This position requires continuous talking or hearing, and frequent standing and walking. Bending, stooping, and lifting materials may be required regularly.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a classroom and childcare setting. Standard schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Health and Safety Standards
Employees must comply with health and safety standards of the Child Development Center/PCC, including NC Childcare background checks and other requirements specific to the childcare environment.
