This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program. This Opportunity WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States to gain hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance their education and professional aptitude. Our interns gain exposure to real projects while working side by side with senior staff. Through our Developing Professionals Network, interns gain mentorship, networking opportunities and lifelong career connections. This internship is anticipated to take place during the Summer 2026 season. The program is anticipated to take place from May 18, 2026 through August 7, 2026. The individual start date is flexible. Your Impact Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills. Learn basic principles of Electrical Engineering. Work closely with experienced engineers on all aspects of utility substation design. Participate in detailed design tasks for low to extra-high-voltage substations, including: One-line diagrams, control and relaying schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA and communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, and substation layouts Perform design calculations following IEEE, NEC, NESC, and industry standards. Assist senior engineers with QA/QC design checks. Support design engineers with physical and protection/control design for electric utility substations. Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation. Complete training on assigned tasks. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship. Who You Are Required Qualifications Actively enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering, or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later. Must be 18 or older. Demonstrated interest in electrical engineering, consulting engineering, the electric utility industry, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP's work and projects. Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience. Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects. Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship. Preferred Qualifications Actively enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering, or related, Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later. Successful completion of junior-level courses in power system analysis and/or power system protection Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus. Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience: Examples of this experience includes: Modeling and simulation professional theories, concepts, principles, techniques, and practices of computer engineering, electronics engineering and/or computer science. GS-12: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience: Examples of this experience includes: Leading and/or performing engineering work involving electronic circuits, circuit elements and equipment systems; applying a number of diverse electronics engineering practices, techniques and processes to identify and resolve complex engineering issues; supporting the planning, testing and troubleshooting of electronics engineering systems or devices; and, developing computer aided engineering analysis and tools in support of planning and designing applications. GS-13: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): * Knowledge of electronics engineering concepts, principles, methods, techniques, and standard engineering practices to perform moderately difficult or relatively limited phases of a larger and more complex installation, operations, and maintenance engineering project. * Knowledge of computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs to perform design and drafting assignments, as well as other computer applications used in support of plans, analysis, and project reports. * Skill in applying the principles, concepts, and practices of the occupation sufficient to perform limited assignments in the field of electronics engineering. * Ability to communicate factual and procedural information clearly, orally and in writing. The Principal Power Electronics Engineer will manage and lead the collaboration with Engineering and Operations teams globally to design, build and qualify innovative power delivery solutions using novel techniques. You will have responsibility for topology selection, component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, test plan development and execution of power electronics circuitry. You'll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities: Lead a small to medium size team of electrical engineers in the designing, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting of power electronics for a variety of projects.
