Summary
Functions as an emergency response medical professional that administers immediate medical care to victims of accidents, violence, and sudden illnesses such as cardiac arrests or strokes. Provides pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility.
Job Duties
Represents the ambulance service while on duty at public service functions, expositions, and other public events and provides ambulance stand by services when necessary.
Documents full assessment and treatments in patient care charting software.
Cares for patients in psychiatric, medical, and traumatic crisis by providing medical, traumatic, and therapeutic services.
Serves as a member of a two-member ambulance crew responding to emergency and non-emergency calls.
Operates equipment such as bag valve mask resuscitators, external defibrillators, and electrocardiograms for advanced life support applications.
Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed such as stabilization, immobilization, lifting, and moving of victims from scene of any accident or catastrophe.
Responds to instructions from a dispatcher and drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed.
Administers drugs via injection, intravenous procedures, or oral administration under the direction of a physician.
Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding treatment.
Cleans and decontaminates ambulance after transporting or treating any patient with infectious disease and reports infectious disease to relevant authorities.

WORK SCHEDULE
This is shift work, the position will likely rotate between days and nights on a 12 hour per day "four on - four off" work schedule. You may also be assigned all days or all nights or placed in a 'float' schedule after an orientation period. There are no guarantees of permanently assigned work schedules at any time during your employment, and your schedule will change as the needs of the service change. There may also be instances where you will be required to work past your normal shift, or arrive early for a future shift due to staffing requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
" Performs both basic and advanced life support procedures in accordance with the United States Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum for Paramedics, with regional modifications by the PA Department of Health, Eastern PA EMS Council.
" Completes a patient care report on all emergencymedical responses, detailing the nature of the emergency, medical history and the treatment provided, within a specified time frame.
" Completes daily shift responsibilities as outlined in City of Allentown Standard Operation Procedures for EMS and those assigned by the supervisor as needed.

This program is open to individuals pursuing a new career or those just starting out. No prior experience is required.

The Full-Time EMT position is an at-will, hourly position, with 36 guaranteed minimum hours per week. This positions primary responsibility is that of an on-the-ambulance EMT. In addition to covering ambulance duty the Full-Time EMT may have duties and chores around the station, including but not limited to restocking of ambulances, washing and general cleaning duties of the Station assigned, and other duties as assigned by the Chief.
As part of EMT duties the Full-Time EMT is responsible for the provision of pre-hospital patient care in accordance with NJAC 8:40 and NJAC 8:40A and shall be responsible for the safe operation of all GMES and/or contracted vehicles in accordance with current New Jersey motor vehicle code. Position requires thirty-six (36) hours of schedule availability per week.
Responsibilities
Reports to work on time and ready to respond to calls
Checks ambulance and ensures readiness for emergency response
Safely responds to emergency calls for assistance
Ensures the safety of the scene prior to entering
The EMT determines the nature and extent of illness or injury and establishes priority for required emergency care. The EMT renders appropriate emergencymedical and/or trauma care
Proper patient packaging and transfer to ambulance
Safely transports patient and crew to receiving facility
Provides verbal report to receiving facility staff
Records the assessment and emergencymedical care of the patient at the emergency scene and in transit utilizing written and/or electronic patient care report
Collects medical insurance information from patient or receiving facility
After each call cleans and restocks the ambulance
Performs routine station maintenance according to schedule
Maintains a daily log of all duties performs
Acts in a professional manner and uses good judgment in carrying out all job responsibilities
Follows proper chain of command for conflict resolution
Any other duties as assigned by a supervisor/ line officer
Qualifications
High school graduate or GED
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
Minimum of 6 months experience as a certified EMT.
Must have previous experience with electronic patient care reporting systems, particularly EMS Charts
Must possess basic computer skills
Must be able to multitask
Must have a general knowledge of EMS vehicles and associated equipment
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Certification by the State of New Jersey (or NJ Office of EMS [NJOEMS]-approved equivalent) as an EmergencyMedicalTechnician
Valid motor vehicle operators license that is not under suspension or revocation
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification by a NJOEMS-approved accrediting agency

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition which would not be adversely affected by lifting, carrying, and balancing at times, patients in excess of 125 pounds (250, with assistance)
Ability to work twelve (12) hour continuous shifts
Motor coordination is necessary for the well-being of the patient, the EMT, and co-worker over uneven terrain
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to work weekdays and weekends from 0600-1800 or 0900-2100 on a flexible or scheduled basis
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid AHA BLS Instructor certification (within six months)
Must be able to read, speak, and write English sufficiently to perform duties
Thorough knowledge of medical and trauma assessments, as well as appropriate BLS treatment protocols
Ability to work effectively with supervisors, co-workers, other emergency service personnel, and hospital staff
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
