Essel is growing and we are looking for a Human Resources/Payroll professional to support our team.
If you reside in the Greater Bay Area and are proficient with payroll, worker's comp, contracts, onboarding and general HR duties then this is a great opportunity for you to join our team!
This is primarily a remote position but you will occasionally be required onsite at our East Bay offices, generally a portion of a couple days a week.
Duties:
Payroll and expense reimbursement oversight and processing, employee record management, worker's comp and unemployment insurance management and claims processing
Development, Implementation and oversight of HR initiatives, processes and systems
Assists with asset management, background checks, drug screens, medical exams and logistics for employees
Ensures candidates meet all state and federal compliance requirements, including daily meal and break laws
Assists with timesheets and various employee needs
Attends and participates in local hiring events and training
Requirements

Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
Familiarity with laws, regulations, and best practices applicable to hiring and recruitment

The Role
The HR Generalist supports a complex, fast-paced mechanical construction organization with union employees and non-union employees across 17 unions, nationwide. This role provides hands-on HR support across employee relations, performance management, recruiting, compliance, HR systems, and employee lifecycle administration.
This position requires sound judgment, strong labor-law knowledge, people operations experience and the ability to balance risk management with practical business needs in a regulated, project-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
Process new hires, rehires, transfers, promotions, demotions, status changes, leaves, and terminations accurately and timely in Microsoft Dynamics 365 HRIS and ADP.
Participate in onboarding activities, including offer letters, pre-employment requirements, orientation scheduling, and first-day readiness.
Ensure completion and retention of I-9s, background checks, drug screens, and required onboarding documentation.
Maintain accurate employee records and data integrity across Microsoft D365 HRIS & ADP
Support offboarding processes, including exit interviews
Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, including policy interpretation, workplace concerns, corrective action, and performance issues.
Conduct prompt, thorough, and legally defensible investigations into complaints involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation and policy violations.
Prepare investigation summaries, findings, and recommendations; escalate matters appropriately.
Advise managers and field leaders on best practices to reduce risk while maintaining accountability.
Respond to employee and manager HR inquiries with accuracy and professionalism.
Support HR reporting, metrics, and dashboards as needed.
Participate in HR projects, initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
Serve as a consistent, credible HR presence for both office and field operations.
Maintain a strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local labor and employment laws, including FLSA, ADA, FMLA, EEO, and Washington State labor laws.
Support Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) administration, documentation, data requests, and audit readiness.
Assist with EEO-1 reporting, internal audits, and compliance initiatives.
Assist with administration of the Gallup Employee Engagement Survey.
Partner with managers to interpret engagement results and develop actionable improvement plans.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
5+ years of progressive HR Generalist experience.
Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive information.
Strong knowledge of labor and employment law.
Proven experience handling employee relations, investigations, and performance management.
High attention to detail and strong documentation skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred
Experience supporting union and non-union workforces.
Experience with AAP/OFCCP compliance.
HR systems experience with D365, ADP, Greenhouse, LMS, or SharePoint.
SHRM-CP or PHR/SPHR certification.
The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000.

We are currently seeking a Payroll Clerk for an upcoming medium voltage data center project in Santa Teresa, NM! The Payroll Clerk supports payroll processing and assists in ensuring that all employees are paid accurately and on time. This role is responsible for entering payroll data, verifying employee details, managing employee time tracking, project coding, and resolving basic payroll discrepancies. The Payroll Clerk works closely with HR and payroll teams to maintain accurate payroll records and assist with general administrative tasks.
Project Miner is a 1400 acre data center initiative located in Santa Teresa, Doña Ana County, New Mexico. It ranks among the largest infrastructure projects in U.S. history, demonstrating the expanding impact of artificial intelligence and cloud computing technology in the country. The project is a collaboration between two of the leading technology firms. The campus will consist of four state-of-the art data center buildings, specifically designed to support hyperscale AI workloads and extensive large-scale data processing. Summit Line Construction is being contracted to install all of the medium voltage cable, equipment, and conduit for two of the buildings over the course of 15 months.
What You'll Do
Key Responsibilities:
Payroll Processing Support
Enter and update employee wage data, hours worked, and pay details into the payroll system.
Assist in calculating regular and overtime pay.
Prepare and distribute employee paychecks or direct deposit details.
Monitor payroll deadlines and ensure timely submissions.
Employee Record Maintenance
Ensure accurate employee data related to new hires, promotions, transfers, and terminations.
Maintain up-to-date payroll records, including tax withholdings and deductions.
Process adjustments to employee pay, such as wage garnishments and reimbursements.
Employee Time Tracking
Review and verify time entries submitted by employees to ensure accuracy and proper categorization of hours (regular, overtime, etc.).
Work with supervisors and department heads to approve or correct time entries.
Communicate with employees to address any discrepancies in time entries or approvals.
Ensure timely submission of timesheets and address any issues related to missed or late entries.
Project Coding
Assign and maintain accurate project codes in the payroll system for employee hours worked.
Collaborate with project managers and accounting to ensure hours are charged to the correct project codes.
Monitor project codes for compliance and accuracy and address any inconsistencies.
Assist with the generation of reports that break down labor costs by project.
Issue Resolution & Communication
Respond to basic employee payroll inquiries and escalate complex issues to Payroll Specialist.
Communicate with employees regarding discrepancies in pay or missing documentation.
Assist in resolving discrepancies between payroll and departmental budgets.
Payroll Compliance & Documentation
Support compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws.
Assist in processing garnishments and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
Maintain payroll documentation, such as pay schedules, tax forms, and deductions.
Administrative Support
Prepare reports related to payroll, employee compensation, and project costs.
Assist in the reconciliation of payroll accounts and batch processing.
Support the Payroll Specialist with quality control and error monitoring.

Job Summary
Knowledgeable in all duties performed by Payroll Clerk I and II. Assists management in daily operations of Department and is responsible for the management of the department in management's absence. About the Role:
Meruelo Enterprises located in the city of Downey, CA is looking for a Payroll Clerk to support the timely processing of company payroll and comply with all governmental and union regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
* ² Enters timesheet and equipment information into the Company's payroll system.
* ² Ensures all required paperwork is received and processed in a timely manner.
* ² Supports the certified payroll reporting process.
* ² Prints and files various reports.
* ² Respond to employee issues related to payroll matters.
* ² Set up and maintain employee garnishments.
* ² Other necessary and required duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
* ² A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
* ² Ideally will have a minimum of 2 years' experience processing and supporting payroll.
* ² General knowledge of the various disciplines and procedures utilized by the Construction industry is preferred.
* ² Ability to stay focused and work without close supervision.
* ² Works well in a team environment as well as independently.
* ² Ability to accurately enter data and perform mathematical calculations.
* ² Ability to adjust priorities on short notice, manage interruptions and work well under pressure.
* ² Ability to timely meet deadlines; coordinate workloads with Supervisor.
* ² Effective communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
* ² Complies with and maintains company confidentiality practices and policies.
* ² Interacts professionally with all company employees and outside persons, such as customers, vendors and professional service providers.
* ² Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and knowledge of spreadsheet applications.
* ² Spectrum software experience preferred, but not required.
* ² Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination are necessary.
* ² Mental alertness is necessary to ensure accurate and thorough completion of work activities.
* ² Ability to interpret and disseminate complex information appropriate and effectively.
* ² Ability to sit for prolonged periods and efficiently operate computer, calculator, copier, fax and other business office equipment.
* ² Comply with accounting and all other company policies, procedures, as well as all relevant federal, state and local reporting requirements.
* ² Working conditions consist of temperature-controlled office; noise level in work environment is usually low.

Job Summary
Knowledgeable in all duties performed by Payroll Clerk I and II. Assists management in daily operations of Department and is responsible for the management of the department in management's absence. Responsible for various specific duties including processing of Payroll, quarterly reports, W-2's and tax account reconciliations. Ideal candidate will have Certified Payroll Experience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Assist other clerks with problems as they arise and are the SME of the payroll system and its capabilities.
2. Assists supervisor in daily operation of the department.
3. Audits weekly 40 hour exception reports, processes W-4s, PAFs and craft transfers and runs standard system reports, (e.g. time and pay edits, and certified payroll reports.)
4. Batches, processes and verifies labor time sheets and communicates with jobsite personnel to reduce errors.
5. Completes weekly payroll processing cycle.
6. Prepares correspondence to the field and is responsible for maintenance of the Employee Master.
7. Responsible for payroll activities pertaining to administrative personnel.
8. Responsible for proper allocation, verification and distribution of W-2s and processes Quarterly and Annual Tax Reports and reconciliations to the General Ledger.
9. Review integrity of reports and corrects history records.
Minimum Job Requirements
1. A minimum of five years accounting experience, with a minimum of three years in Payroll. Some supervisory experience.
2. Able to work extended hours on a regular basis. Excellent data entry skills & Excel.
3. High school diploma or equivalent and some entry level college accounting classes.
4. Must have decision making capabilities and leadership qualities, be detail oriented and capable of high volume output under stress.
5. Proficient use of all Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Compiles data from personnel records and prepares reports.
Checks the 800# voicemails and communicates messages to HR Management.
Updates employee files to document personnel actions and to provide information for Payroll, Benefits, and other identified uses. This includes maintaining the filing room.
Distributes department's mail to appropriate individuals.
Will work with all levels of management and employees.
Provides back-up support to the Front Desk Coordinator.
Maintains confidentiality and discretion in use of information related to employees, managers, and departmental operations without exception.
Qualifications
