Akron General's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) encompasses both the 12-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and the 12-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). These units provide comprehensive, patient-centered critical care to diverse populations of patients ranging from young adults to geriatric patients. Patients in the ICU have a wide range of needs as these are Level I trauma, critical care and CRRT dialysis patients requiring one-on-one care. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on the team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments. A caregiver in this position works 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with every other weekend and 3 holidays per year requirements. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies. Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc. Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height. Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck's traction and removing urinary Foley Catheters. Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. Document patient care in the electronic medical record. Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, report equipment that is out of order, clean equipment and inventory and distribute unit linen and supplies. Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure. TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Receive phone calls and messages and return calls to patients and/or family in a timely manner. Triage patients and review with LP as necessary any acute & post op patient issues with LP and schedule acute visits as necessary Check LP's schedules frequently for any add-ons or updates. Review the patient's medical record prior to visit to verify completeness, including having test results available. Room patients in a timely fashion; verify patient identity and compare with chart. Obtain vital signs, height, weight, and current accurate list of medications and pertinent information needed for the LP to assess the patient. Will perform straight, foley, & suprapubic catheter changes and care. Administer bladder treatments and chemotherapy via catheter. Prepare and administer IM and SQ medications as ordered by LP.
