Under the supervision and/or direction of a Nurse, performs various duties assisting the nursing staff, operations of the nursing unit, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Understands and adheres to GCMC's Compliance Standards as they appear in GCMC's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and GCMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
Experience:
• Previous experience in clerical or receptionist position
• Hospital experience or satisfactory completion of medical secretary training program preferred.
• CPR certification recommended
• Specialty Unit (ICU): Successful completion of arrhythmia interpretation class within 90 days of hire
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to communicate in various and complex situations
a) Functions as communication focus during emergency situations and for STAT requests and orders.
b) Acts as focus of communication at nurses station regarding all patient care activities by answering phone, relaying accurate messages to physicians, staff, and inpatients, relaying appropriate patient location information and is able to provide direction regarding the same.
c) Acts in the role of traffic coordinator for daily unit activities during assigned shift.
d) Maintains a courteous and calm manner throughout all communications especially with patients/families and other healthcare providers.
2. Performs other clerical duties as assigned
a) Receives and distributes mail to department staff and patients.
b) Delivers flowers or other various items to patients.
c) Runs other errands throughout the medical center as assigned by nurse manager, charge nurse or nursing supervisor.
d) Orders department clerical and other supplies through computerized system
3. Computerized Order Entry/Transcription of Orders
a) Transcribes written physician orders accurately on to kardex and other applicable forms.
b) Transcribes computerized physician orders to kardex and other applicable forms.
c) Communicates any issue or discrepancies with orders that are identified to the charge nurse.
d) Communicates any urgent or stat needs immediately to the charge nurse. e) Utilizes downtime procedures accurately and with ease.
4. Maintains Patient Chart/Medical Record
a) Initiates and assembles charts for all patients on the assigned unit.
b) Maintains the chart in an appropriate, functional and organized order as recommended by the HIM chart order policy.
c) Files diagnostic and lab reports in correct patient record every time.
d) Protects patient health information according to all HIPAA regulations.
e) Monitors the location of chart at all times and prepares chart for HIM upon discharge and within a timely manner.
5. Specialty Unit: (ICU)
a) Continuously observe patient cardiac monitors, interpreting, notating and notifying nursing staff of lethal irregularities. Interpret every 8 hours at minimum.
The pay for this position ranges from $17.00-$23.49 per hour.
