Maintains employee schedule ensuring adequate coverage for hours of operation and call coverage on weekends and Holidays. * Assists SPD Manager in evaluations of Sterile Processing staff. * Acts as liaison and facilitates communication between sterile processing and operating room personnel/nursing units. * Facilitates the processing of instrumentation and equipment, ensuring quality and customer satisfaction. Assist with collecting data for Quality Assurance. * Reviews operating room schedules, anticipating needs and/or conflicts with instrumentation, coordinating instrumentation for all procedures with operating room personnel. * Responsible for the daily review of all recording tapes and biological / chemical tests from all sterilizers and records results. Implements hospital policy and procedure for positive biological tests. * Monitors staff compliance with all required safety precautions. * Assumes responsibility of department in absence of Manager SPD * Coaches' staff and rounds with staff consistently. * Conducts staff meetings/huddles and provides educational opportunities for staff. * Ensures SPD policies and procedures are kept updated. * Ensures the competency of all SPD staff and other staff who may be involved in high level disinfection and/or sterilization in other areas. Maintains departmental education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines. * Oversees quality and infection control initiatives for SPD. * Provides a comprehensive and technical orientation, education and training program for the sterile processing staff. * Assists Manager with managing labor and supply components of the budget. * Assists Manager in organization functions of the department. * Assists Manager in conducting annual performance evaluations of SPD staff. * Assist the Manager with evaluation of the department's service delivery. Recommends and implements process improvements. * Responsible for all daily operations in the absence of the SPD Manager. * Develops educational calendar for all in-service training. Provides education and training to SPD staff. * Demonstrated leadership in directing and maintaining productive and positive behavior among staff. *Other Responsibilities:* * Position requires an individual who is self-motivated, able to complete assignments with minimal supervision. Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments and body fluids by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing and using ultrasonic or other mechanical methods, as applicable. Assembles all instrument sets following prescribed manner and as outlined on the Instrument Count Sheets. Properly documents missing items from the set and labels sets correctly. Takes action to correct problems with instrument sets and reports any unresolved issues. Sterilizes instruments, equipment, linen and supplies using various types of autoclaves and aerators. Reprocesses equipment via high level disinfection as appropriate. Loads and operates machinery in prescribed manner and sets controls to correct specifications for the items being sterilized. Properly documents all activities related to instrument/equipment decontamination, assembly, disinfection, and sterilization in the Instrument Tracking System (SPM, Censitrac) or established manual systems. Observe and interpret biological, mechanical and chemical monitors relevant to processing/sterilizing. Record results and maintains required records. Initiates recalls as required. Issues items to customers and departments according to established procedures. Observes and reports to supervisor any unfamiliar items with or without appropriate processing literature. Reports equipment requiring repair as needed. Is self-directed and intervenes with corrections to variances in the processing practice. Supervisory/Management Responsibility This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive. Minimum Requirements Job-related coursework: Surgical Tech, Sterile Processing Tech, or Dental Assistant training program. No experience is required. The Non-Certified Sterile Processing Technologist is responsible for decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution of surgical instruments. The process includes meticulous manual cleaning of Endoscopes, leak testing of scope, instrument inspection, and scope washer operations. A day in the life of a PMC Sterile Processing Tech may include: Performs all components of reprocessing, high-level disinfection, care, and maintenance of GI endoscopes and equipment. Responsible for care and maintenance of Automated Endoscope Reprocessors, including monitoring and changing of high-level disinfectant; testing and documentation of disinfectant efficacy; changing of disinfectant and troubleshooting AER problems. Tests all equipment to verify proper working condition. Reports malfunction to supervisor. Perform and verify Quality Indicators are within range. Assists with the input of information into the database. Effectively communicates information regarding scope repairs, loaners, supplies, and QI information by maintaining documentation of all actions. Accurately records data in appropriate logbooks. Assists with the ordering and restocking of supplies. Assists with patient transport, procedure monitoring, room turnover, and instrument/equipment processing. Assists room personnel with patient preparations and positioning according to departmental policy. Assists in documenting and labeling specimens as the physician performs the endoscopic procedure. Required Qualifications High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider is required. Preferred Qualifications Sterile reprocessing, gastroenterology, or endo tech experience preferred. ASSEMBLES INSTRUMENT TRAYS AND PACKS: * Unloads instruments from washer sterilizers and distributes to appropriate workstations. * Assembles instrument trays and packs utilizing written instructions and proper protocol. * Checks for sharpness and proper functioning of instruments. * Recognizes and memorizes a large variety of instruments. * Applies sterilization wrappers properly to maintain the integrity of the contents. * Utilizes heat sealer on packs as needed. * Each item is identified correctly on the outside packaging of each item. * Loads sterilizer carriage and transports trays to sterilization area. OPERATES STERILIZERS, DOCUMENTS LOADS, AND RETURNS STOCK TO APPROPRIATE AREA: * Checks trays, packs, and basins on sterilizer carriage making certain that correct procedures have been utilized. * Able to operate each type of sterilizer. Selects correct cycle and time period required for specified load. * Knowledgeable of all methods of sterilization (i.e., Sterrad, Steam) * Accurately documents all sterilization information. This can be completed manually or through the use of a computer. * Biological monitoring is completed per departmental policy. * Sterile instruments and supplies are handled properly and restocked in sterile storage area. All items are rotated as required. * All equipment is continuously monitored to ensure it is functioning properly. BUILDS SURGICAL CASES : * Surgical preference lists are obtained from computer to pull supplies for each case. * Location of instruments and supplies are labeled to increase efficiency. * Performs quality control final check before items leave the department. * Procedural carts used are restocked, stored, or returned to appropriate area. OTHER: * Fulfills requests from the OR and Pre-op/PACU when requested. * Assists with one-on-one training of other associates. * Responds to emergency codes when required. * Follows instructions and departmental guidelines regarding sterility. * Attends departmental-in-services and mandatory meetings. * Knowledgeable of all areas in the Sterile Processing Department. * Acts as a liaison between the Sterile Processing Department and all customers and communicates in a courteous manner. * Makes effective use of time and is able to distinguish between low and high priority activities.
