Responsibilities The primary purpose of the Patient Care Technician (Certified) position is to be responsible for the delivery of safe, quality patient/family focused care and services under the direction of a Professional Registered Nurse. The Patient Care Technician (Certified) is a member of a designated care team and collaborates with team members in achieving goals. Patient care is provided congruent with the patient/family developmental stage and cultural expectations. The competent practice of the Patient Care Technician is evidenced by patient/family goal achievement, patient safety, patient/family satisfaction, and care and services that are thoroughly documented as dictated by policy and procedure. The Patient Care Technician (Certified) conducts her/himself according to the behavioral expectations articulated for this role. Qualifications Certified as a Patient Care Technician by National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or equivalent. Ability to read and write English. Responsibilities Under the direction of the Staff Nurse, the Patient Sitter will be assigned to a specific patient and will remain in constant attendance with the patient to assist in maintaining the patient's safety. The Patient Sitter must provide continuous observation of the patient until relieved by a qualified individual, and will report any observed changes in the patient's condition/behavior to the patient's nurse. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. BLS certification from American Heart Association. Successful completion of University Hospital's Handle with Care and Sitter Training Courses which are part of orientation and must be completed prior to performing the actual Patient Sitter role. Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations. Able to fulfill the physical demand requirements of the job as stated. FIT Testing required. This involves the patient in their care and allows the team members to collaborate with the patient to give them the best possible care and appropriate discharge to home or other facilities. Overview The Trauma Step-Down Unit (TSDU) is a 9-bed intermediate critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients. Patients with serious but less critical injuries can be admitted to the TSDU directly from the ED or the Ross Trauma Admitting Area. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Patients may also be transferred to the TSDU from the Trauma/Surgical ICU when their clinical condition has improved but close monitoring or ventilator support is still required. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. Experience Required 0-2 years' experience required. Nurses who are staffed on Kelemen 9 are required to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications, which will allow competent and safe care for our complex patient populations. Assumes responsibility for record keeping, intra-departmental and interdepartmental communications, written and electronic medical record keeping. Follow policies and procedures to ensure patient safety. Record keeping responsibilities include documenting Snippets in GE Airstrip every four hours. Document patient's rhythm interpretation and measure HR, PR, QRS and QT intervals when applicable for each patient monitored on telemetry. Use Telemetry Report Sheet to Document patient's rhythm including ectopic events, rhythm changes. Document each patient's hourly rhythm and heart rate on the Telemetry Report Sheet. Notify nursing staff for loss of telemetry signal, weak batteries and changes in patient's condition including rhythm changes, ectopic events and significant changes in patient's heart rate. Utilize Event Report Sheet to document notification of patient's rhythms and ectopic changes to nursing staff. Document escalation calls utilizing chain of command for any delay in response from nursing staff. Utilize Emergency Intercom to communicate life threatening rhythms and ectopic events to the nursing unit. #LI-CU1 Experience Required 0-2 years experience preferred. Observes and documents information associated with patients on cardiac monitoring and telemetry system. Continually observes cardiac monitors of telemetry and dialysis patients; reports changes and/or irregularities in rhythm patterns to the professional nurse. Diagnoses and records individual rhythm strips on all patients' charts after calculating rate, rhythm and interval measurements. Maintains continuous shift record of heart rate changes, ectopic beats, alarms status, intravenous anti-arrhythmic therapies and other pertinent data. Completes a written and verbal SBAR report at the end of each shift. Maintains patient census and data sheets, prepares records for transfer. Maintains adequate monitoring stock supplies.
