    This position is responsible for leading the efforts of the Protection & Control Engineering team in all aspects of the design, installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the P&C systems. The P&C Engineering team analyzes electric system events, assists in designing, reviewing, and modernizing P&C schemes, commissions new T&D equipment, performs maintenance in accordance with NERC and NIPSCO standards, and provides technical support to other engineering and operations departments. The Supervising Engineer directs field work that occurs in an industrial setting with exposure to high voltage, electromagnetic fields, and hazardous materials. Work schedule can include extended hours and overnight stays out of the area. Personnel are subject to 24/7 emergency call out. Essential Functions Sets the example for safety, best practices, work ethic, and company values for the P&C Engineering team Provides leadership and technical direction for all P&C capital and maintenance projects Provides technical expertise for scoping and planning future capital projects Ensures field engineers are progressing by providing clear goals aligned with company values, conducting performance reviews, visiting job sites, inspecting work, and coaching employees Ensures that field engineers are maintaining uniform and safe testing practices Provides coaching to field engineers concerning rules and procedures that insure safe working conditions. Collaborates with operations and field engineers to resolve transmission and distribution system problems. Investigates and documents system interruptions by utilizing the DFRs, relay event files, SERs, EMS system, relay settings, control prints, and field engineers Responsible for ensuring that internal engineering and external engineering firms abide by company standards of control scheme logic, relay settings, and P&C drawings Reviews the design of substation grounding systems and recommends improvements. Provides technical assistance and engineering services to various departments within the company as well as industrial and commercial customers. Coordinates relay maintenance program activities and maintains all associated databases Interfaces with neighboring utilities concerning maintenance and troubleshooting of protective relay equipment on common circuits. Maintains relay, regulator control, and recloser control replacement parts inventory and issues purchase requisitions for parts or repairs as required. Ensures that protective relay standards and NIPSCO electric standards are up-to-date Inventories, budgets, and orders the instruments and tools required by the field engineering staff. Prepares capital budget items for protection and control system improvements to insure continued electric system reliability. Coordinates the maintenance and upkeep of all substation schematic and wiring diagrams, associated engineering records and computer databases. Leads a qualified team of at least two or more full time employees and has the authority to hire, terminate, coach, develop, promote, demote and performance manage members of the team. Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications for Position Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or in Electric Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program 4+ years' experience in electric power system protection and control operations and maintenance. These skills are typically gained as a Level 3 or Senior Protection & Control Engineer. Specific knowledge and understanding of Protection & Control principles. Able to provide P&C training across the organization for NERC PRC-001 compliance. High Comprehensive knowledge of T&D system configurations and substation operations High Able to direct the design of protection & control schemes for new substations or renovation projects. Able to perform drawing reviews to ensure strict adherence to P&C standards. Provides guidance and support to external design firms High Skilled ability to work with customers, contractors, and internal teams on complex P&C designs. Medium Skilled ability to analyze and troubleshoot protection & control schemes across a broad spectrum. Medium Skilled in the ability to analyze system events and provide detailed summary reports to operational teams High Comprehensive mastery of engineering PC applications (AutoCad, Meridian, SEL AcSELerator, RTS, Powerbase, WebFG) Medium Knowledgeable with Protective Relay Management Systems (Cascade, Powerbase, and RTS) Medium Ability to perform P&C scoping for complex capital improvement projects Medium Knowledge of electrical engineering principles including: 3-phase circuit theory, energy systems, electronics theory and equipment troubleshooting concepts. High Ability to read and interpret electric schematic and wiring diagrams, operate electrical test and measurement equipment and accurately interpret results. High Communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel. High Knowledge of safety policies/procedures, material/supply systems, and electric/material standards. Medium Knowledge of Capital and O/M budgeting systems. Low Knowledge of engineering PC applications. Medium Knowledge of supervisory principles for coaching and mentoring personnel. Provides engineering support to the Member Systems on various distribution line matters which may include 12KV underbuild design, sag/tension calculations, easement procurement, joint use pole issues, etc. Assists with the development and continued improvement of departmental standards and specifications. Support line maintenance activities as necessary. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering or similar field from an ABET accredited institution required. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering preferred. 2+ years of progressive experience in Transmission Line design required.
