CNC Machinist (2nd shift)
Computer numerical controller machinist job at Horton
Horton, Inc., a global airflow industry leader in reliability, service and innovation has an opening for a CNC Machinist to work in our Britton, SD location. This is a 2nd shift position and standard hours are Monday-Thursday from 3:30 pm to 2:00 am, with overtime, as needed. The pay starts at $26.95 per hour and there is a shift premium of $1.25 per hour for this shift.
CNC Machinist Position Summary:
The CNC machinist sets up and operates machine tools within the work cell. Loads materials into machines and operates machine tools to produce finished parts that conform to proper dimensions, inspecting work and performing basic setting/adjusting of the machine to maintain products within specified tolerances.

Responsibilities
CNC Machinist Responsibilities:
Changes settings or programs and tooling inserts in order to achieve the proper dimensions of finished parts.
Assisting less experienced machinists with more complex or more difficult set-ups.
Operates one or more machine tools to produce high quality parts in an efficient manner.
Performs daily and weekly routine machine maintenance.
Moves between machines in the cell as directed by area manager.
Sets up and operates machine tools within the work cell.
As with everyone on the team, other duties may be assigned to support the overall success of the company.
Qualifications
CNC Machinist Qualifications:
Requires experience with Mills and/or Lathe work experience as CNC Machinist or a 2-year technical degree.
Blueprint reading
Communicate and work well and efficiently with others
Basic computer
Intermediate inspection and measurement
Basic machine setup and operation
Basic math

Summary Operate CNC machine centers such as vertical/horizontal mills and/or turning centers. Operate control consoles to enter data for machine operation. The machining operation requires loading CNC programs and tool magazines and the set up and positioning of parts in holding fixtures; also edit programs as required to produce optimal results. Actively observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction.
Conduct in process inspections and measure workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.
Ensure quality standards / inspection plan are completed / meet for the completed machine operation.
Edit program as required to compensate for tool wear and machine operation in order to continually produce parts within tolerance.
Remove flashing, burrs, and sharp edges from work piece and perform other additional operations at CNC work center that will reduce shop flow.

About the Role
As
a CNC Machinist you will play a key role in the daily operation, setup, and quality assurance of machines within their designated area. This role supports both production goals and a culture of safety while upholding the core values of the company:

What You'll Do
Independently set up machines for various jobs; seek assistance from a Supervisor or Senior Machinist for advanced setups as needed.
Execute efficient, high-quality machine operation, ensuring parts meet required specifications through frequent inspections and documentation.
Proactively recommend and implement process improvements in collaboration with Engineering and Senior Machinists.
Assist in troubleshooting processes with the support of Supervisors, Engineers, and Senior Machinists to maintain optimal production flow.
Keep a comprehensive written log at each machine, creating a record of machine operations, part specifications, and setup notes accessible to other shifts or supervisors.
Perform in-process inspections of machined products, accurately documenting results, and verifying adherence to standards.
Conduct and support first-piece inspections, ensuring alignment with inspection plans and troubleshooting as needed.
Perform total productive maintenance on assigned machines, including minor repairs and troubleshooting.
Train other machinists or operators on job functions, controls, and machine operations to promote team competency and flexibility.
Maintain and promote a safe working environment, reporting potential hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment issues promptly.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Two-year certificate in machine trades preferred
2+ years of experience in CNC machining
Previous experience working with CMM and VCMM
Skills and Competencies:
Ability to express ideas, share information, listen actively, and demonstrate professionalism in written and verbal communications.
Able to read and interpret blueprints, use simple math to perform basic calculations, and use hand-held measuring tools.
Basic knowledge of CMM, VCMM, and GD&T.

* Operate and read basic hand measurement instruments with repeatable skill and accuracy with micrometers, depth micrometer, dial calipers, inspection pins, travel and lever indicators, test centers, radius gauges, gauge blocks, inspection pins, thread plug gauges, thread ring gauges, and plug gauges, functional gauges, height stands.
* Programs and operates tool room lathes and tool room mills.
* Maintains a clean and organized work area and safe shop environment.
* Proficient at machining fixture components on tooling mills and turning centers.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

* Studies blueprints to determine machining needs, plans the tooling layout, and understands best plan for machining.
* Studies and has a good understanding of preliminary blueprints and specifications. While recognizing manufacturing problems and conferring with Engineering and Operational personnel to act on these problems early on in new designs.
* Setting manufacturing processes for prototype, while also determining if changes need to be made for future production. Understands cutting forces and the effect on parts and fixturing.
Demonstrates this in the processing of parts with proper tool selection, tool path, tool sequencing, and fixture design to establish an effective and efficient process while maintaining close dimensional tolerances.
* Works as a team player to identify manufacturing problems, cost reduction ideas, and solutions
* Proficient at operating and set up/programming the following equipment: lathes and vertical mills, understanding of cutting compensation, work coordinate system, to include some 4th axis machining.
* Proficient at operating the tool and cutter grinder.
* Able to design and fabricate moderate level hydraulic and pneumatic fixtures for prototype and production processes.
* Understands the effect of cutting forces on the part and fixture, and demonstrates this in the fixture design
