    The Phlebotomist II performs phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients both in in-patient and out-patient settings, ranging from routine to advanced functions. Responsibilities include the processing, organizing, labeling and transporting of specimens as well as the input and extraction of data with the Laboratory Information System. Provides for patient care while performing duties, independently handling patient care and technical issues as they arise within the scope of their job. As an experienced and fully competent Phlebotomist, serves as a role model and preceptor for staff. Files requisitions, reports and other pathology materials appropriately. + Independently handles resolution of complex problems and issues and notifies management of issue and resolution. Serves as escalation support for less experienced staff. + Sets pace for workload and troubleshoots workflow issues. Utilizes all available work time by assisting others and performing additional tasks. **QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** + Performs and documents daily check off duties and restocks supplies in the work area as assigned. + Performs interactive patient ID. Identifies patient and labels specimen correctly 100% of the time using two patient identifiers. Accurately processes, organizes, orders, labels and transports specimens for laboratory testing. + Recognizes and initiates action to resolve requisition and specimen labeling discrepancies. Definitions * The Phlebotomy Processing Supervisor is responsible for the operation of the laboratory area involving phlebotomy and specimen processing to include staff, quality, supplies and fiscal responsibilities. Interacts with other areas of the lab and facility to ensure efficient and effective functioning. Contact With Others Performance of job requires contact with others where team work is essential, requiring tact in order to obtain cooperation. Contacts may be outside of the organization also. Effect Of Error Probable errors not easily detected and may adversely affect external as well as internal relationships and may result in major expenditures for equipment, materials, or procedures detrimental to the patient?s welfare or the organization?s interest. Work is subject to general review only and requires considerable accuracy and responsibility. Continually works with reports, records, plans, and programs of a major functional area of the organization where integrity is required to safeguard the organization?s position. Duties may involve the preparation of data on which the administration bases important decisions and are highly confidential. Supervisory Responsibility Has limited supervision over a large section of employees (15 up), i.e. assigns and directs their work; instructs new employees and corrects results, may discuss with supervisor, but has no authority over job content or personnel. Team governance where the Members evaluate, interview, and recommend personnel actions. Mental Demands Assignment requires planning and arranging own work to reach definite objectives. Applies knowledge of a specific field using several varied procedures or techniques. Solves non-routine technical, treatment, or operational problems under general guides Physical Effort Medium physical effort - Lifts, carries, or handles lightweight (1 to 25 lbs.) materials or equipment for most of the day. Occasional physical effort with medium weight objects (25-60 lbs.). Very occasional physical effort with heavy objects (over 60 lbs.).Works in reaching or strained positions for about half of day. Working Conditions Considerable - (About 75% of the day) Involved in exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature/weather extremes/occupational risk and probability of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious diseases, or biomedical/bio-hazardous materials.
