Externs are expected to uphold the values, mission, and professional standards of Hunterdon Medical Center. Open to rising senior-level nursing students in an Associate or Baccalaureate program Applicants must have completed core clinical rotations by Spring 2026 Must be able to commit to the full 9-week program (May 26th - July 25, 2026) Commitment: 36 hours per week, including weekends Shifts: 4 weeks on days, 4 weeks on nights # Nursing Unit Placement:# Externs are assigned to a specific unit for the duration of the program and are expected to remain on that unit, even if it was not their top choice. While we make every effort to consider individual preferences, final placement decisions are based on unit needs. Assignment details are provided shortly before the program begins. QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. Bachelor's in nursing. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey. American Heart Association BLS required. Certification within specialty preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Meets qualifications as outlined for specialty (see chart). Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as leadership skills required. The Clinical Decision Unit is on the first floor of the Kelemen building. We are a locked unit and require a badge to enter or ring the doorbell to be let in. The Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) is a35-bed, single-room unit.The patients are typically here for observation or if needed to be admitted as an inpatient they will stay in CDU until a floor bed is available.
Multidisciplinary rounds are done Monday - Friday. This involves the patient in their care and allows the team members to collaborate with the patient to give them the best possible care and appropriate discharge to home or other facilities.
The Express Admit Unit (EXAU) is under the management of the CDU. There are 6-bed areas where the admitted patients stay until a floor bed is available. This gives them privacy and care while waiting for their room to be available.
Both CDU and EXAU can have patients on telemetry for cardiac monitoring.
