MAJOR FUNCTION:
Performs all clinical, clerical, and environmental services duties as directed by the Registered Nurse in the care of patients in Maternal-Child Health. Possesses the knowledge and skill required to provide the perioperative patient with the safest quality of care, according to their need. Assists the surgeon during the intraoperative phase under the direction of the Registered Nurse circulator and surgeon.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
High School graduate or equivalent required.
Previous experience as unit clerk/nurses aid preferred.
Ability to scrub for surgical procedures highly desirable.
Certification/ Licensure:
BLS required.
Graduate of surgical technology program or current CST certification required.
LPN preferred.

Summary:
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Physician, the Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Position Responsibilities:

Short Description
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), assists with patients' activities of daily living and plan of care.
Communicates with and supports healthcare team, patients and/or patient's family or significant other(s).

Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Pavilion-8, an Intermediate surgical and medical surgical unit with 30 single rooms and the capacity to be a complete intermediate unit, is genuinely committed to providing extraordinary patient care. Our surgical services include ENT, Vascular, Plastic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Surgical oncology, and Urology. Our leadership structure, comprised of a clinical director, an assistant clinical director, clinical nurse managers, and a clinical educator, is dedicated to supporting our staff and patient safety.
Pavilion-8 is supported by our unit secretaries, critical care technicians, and registered nurses seven days a week. We work towards having all of our nurses' cross-trained in surgical intermediate within the first year at Cooper.
Pavilion-8 fosters a close relationship with our providers, as our APN's and Surgical Residents are easily accessible for support, questions, and directions with patient care. They have offices right here on the unit, along with our leadership team and our transitional care team.

Patients are also admitted to the unit as they are downgraded from the Trauma/Surgical ICU or the Trauma Step-Down Unit. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient.

The Labor and Delivery unit has 6 labor rooms, 1 treatment room, and 2 high risk maternal advanced care beds. There are also 2 designated operating rooms and 2 PACU bays. The unit specializes in labor and delivery of uncomplicated and high-risk pregnancies. The Obstetrical Triage unit consists of 7 triage bays as well as 2 non-stress test chairs. Any patient 16 weeks pregnant or greater to 6 weeks post-partum is seen in OB Triage. Patients are seen for various complaints as well as for iron/blood infusions, and Rhogam injections.
Experience Required
1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred.
Education Requirements

Short Description
The trained Surgical technologist, under the direct supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and/or physician, is assigned as an assistant to specific service areas in the Surgical Suite.
Education Requirements
Graduate of a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for Surgical Technologists.
License/Certification Requirements
Certified Surgical Technologist Credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization (e.g. NCCT - National Center for Competency Testing, etc.)
Special Requirements
Mon-Fri with on-call requirement for nights/weekends
Must annually complete 15 hours of continuing education to remain qualified to practice as a Surgical Technologist in NJ.

Short Description
Carries out procedures for department functions, including, but not limited to:
Assists anesthesia department with daily preparation for cases, room turnover, restocking of supplies, cleaning of equipment and other duties as noted in job description.
Assist sterile processing technician with duties as assigned.
Assist supply coordinator with duties as assigned.
Follows established policies & procedures.
Communicates openly with internal customers and supervisors.
Provides excellent customer service interfacing well with all levels of staff, management, and physicians.
Applies Cooper core values.
Other duties as required.
Experience Required
Previous training and experience as patient care technician or nursing assistant of one year duration.
Excellent customer service skills.
Demonstrates initiative and ability to take independent action.
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Formal patient care technician or nursing assistant training desired.
License/Certification Requirements
BLS Required
