MAJOR FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for assisting with surgical procedures in the Delivery Room for which she/he has been prepared within the scope of law. This position will function as an integral part of the nursing team in working with RN in caring for patients; and is self-directive providing sub-acute care or performing routine activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
High School graduate or equivalent required.
Must meet one of the requirements below as detailed in NJ Surgical Technology Certification Law effective December 21, 2011:
Has successfully completed a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists OR
Holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization OR
Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps OR
Provides evidence that the person was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility on the effective date December 21, 2011, OR
Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent that individual is performing surgical technology duties related to that service.
A minimum of 1 year of Scrub Technician experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
Required to complete 15 hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified to practice as a surgical technologist the state of NJ.
CST certification.
BLS required.
Knowledge & Skills:

The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients or those patients undergoing complex surgeries requiring close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted directly from the ED, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Many patients cared for the in the TSICU are poly-trauma, with injuries involving more than one body system. Common surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians and attending trauma surgeons. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient.

Nurses who are staffed on Kelemen 9 are required to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications, which will allow competent and safe care for our complex patient populations.

Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit.
Overview
The Surgical Care Unit (SCU), Short Procedure Unit (SPU) Same Day Surgery (SDS) and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) are in Camden at the hospital on the second, third and fifth floors. First Pre-Admission Testing, located in 3 Cooper calls to review a patient's health information prior to a surgical procedure. Once approval for the recommended surgical procedure is finalized and patient information is reviewed the patient is provided with information on when and where to report. Once arrived and registered the patient is escorted to the appropriate location to be prepped for surgical procedure. These RN's prep the patient for the procedure. They review medical history, medical procedures and place an IV. Patients are met by Anesthesia and their Surgeon. Once everything is reviewed and verified the patient then goes to the OR.
Experience Required
Minimum Qualifications (must meet at least one):
Completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program; OR
Completion of at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited Nursing Program; OR
One (1) year or more of patient care experience in a similar role
Education Requirements
Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited Nursing Program
Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/ technician program
High school diploma/GED
License/Certification Requirements
American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification
Must successfully complete EKG and Phlebotomy training during orientation
