Responsibilities
* Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist; process medication and IV orders which may include reviewing orders, retrieving, packaging, labeling, compounding sterile and non-sterile elements, delivering and performing required documentation.
* Procurement of pharmaceuticals and supplies
* Coding of invoices.
* Restock drugs and supplies.
* Deliver medications to patient care areas and pick up orders and/or returned medications.
* Clean pharmacy drug and solution work and storage areas per assigned schedule.
* Check pharmacy drug and IV solution supplies for dates of expiration and remove outdated drugs and supplies according to policy and procedure.
* Answer the telephone, screen and route all incoming telephone calls to the appropriate person or take messages according to office policy and procedure.
* Greet clients providing courteous, caring and professional assistance.
* Perform monthly inventory of drugs.
* Check and document temperatures for fridges, freezers, incubators and take appropriate action if necessary.
* Complete and pass biannual Aseptic technique testing as outlined in P & P in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Education:
* High School or Vocational School graduate or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
* Experience in retail or clinical pharmacy setting.
* Read, speak and write fluent English and perform simple arithmetic computations.
* Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures.
Licensure:
* Registered as a pharmacy technician with Board of Pharmacy prior to commencement of work if already nationally certified (or registered as technician trainee if not yet certified)
* Valid licensed driver with automobile insurance in accordance with state and/or organizational requirements.
* Mandatory Reporter: Child & Dependent Adult Abuse.

Team includes a manager, assistant manager, five other radiology technologists, and eight registered nurses.

Scheduling includes one weekend on-call per month.
On-call schedule consists of 1-2 nights per week and one weekend call per month.
Holiday expectations include working one major holiday during the contract.

General Summary of Position Responsibility:
Selects and prepares medications, fills, exchanges and credits unit‑dose carts and processes drug orders. Answers and screens phone calls. Prepares cytotoxic agents when necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
Enters new orders under the direction of a pharmacist. Processes new prescriptions and refills. Puts cardexes in order and prints new profiles when necessary.
Prepares labels manually or by computer for oral doses, injectables and large volume parenterals when necessary.
Selects and prepares appropriate oral, topical and injectable medications for new medication orders, unit‑dose carts and outpatient prescriptions when applicable. Prepares cytotoxic agents when necessary.
Fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts upon authorization of a pharmacist. Notifies pharmacists of returned doses. Returns usable stock to inventory.
Stocks shelves and notes low stock items on stock reorder form. Prepacks bulk medication as needed. Inspects stock of assigned areas to ensure that medications are stored properly and are in date.
Maintains physical appearance of department. Screens telephone calls and effectively communicates telephone messages to co-workers.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Review and prepare medications to be dispensed for Pharmacist approval.
Ensures correct selection of dosage, form, strength and quantity of medications for dispensing to the automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis) or for use in compounding medications.
Prepares unit dose medications with bar code labels for the automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis).
Labels medication according to regulatory guidelines with all appropriate information prior to pharmacist verification.
Prepares intravenous (IV) medications for inpatient and outpatient use by using sterile aseptic technique as described by USP guidelines.
Mixes pharmaceutical preparations, fills bottles with prescribed tablets and capsules, and creates labels for bottles.\
2. Maintains appropriate medication stock levels based on patient care needs for the pharmacy and the patient care areas including determination of appropriate levels and ordering of products.
Orders supplies and medications through the pharmacy wholesaler and other suppliers as deemed necessary.
Monitors drugs closely to evaluate and establish appropriate stock levels.
Restocks supplies and medications in the pharmacy
Restocks medications in all Pyxis units and other areas as approved ]Delivers medications to ancillary departments upon request
Monitors pharmaceutical inventory within the pharmacy and other areas
Keeps the formulary up to date with the current stock and keeps it available for use.
Monitors medication outdates in the pharmacy department, pyxis stations, and crash carts throughout the facility.
3.Triages questions in the form of customer service.
Demonstrates excellent customer service and a pleasant demeanor during all communication with patients or health care professionals.
Demonstrates ability to determine the level of expertise required to address the patient/health provider need to transfer/refer them to the desired individual.
Consults with pharmacist on medication questions and relays information to patients and/or providers when appropriate.
4. Performs and maintains documentation.
Documents all unit dose preparations
Documents all compounded preparations according to USP guidelines
Documents all medications dispensed to the automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis)
Maintains and stores all records in the pharmacy for the appropriate amount of time according to the Iowa State Board of Pharmacy and Drug Enforcement Agency regulations
Handles all storage of CIII-CV records in accordance with the law
Handles all storage of T3 statements in accordance with FDA regulations
Handles all storage of records and invoices
Files department records.
5. Provides administrative support for the Pharmacy department.
Initiates phones calls, receives/screens/routes incoming visitors/calls.
Schedules appointments for drug representatives.
Schedules appointments for anticoagulation clinic patients
Cleans equipment according to prescribed methods.
Maintain and audit billed transactions for inpatient and outpatient medications
Collect pharmacy charge sheets from ancillary departments

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
* Assist pharmacist in specific dispensing functions:
* Receives and interprets medications orders
* Fills automated medication dispensing machines (Omnicell)
* Assume specific inventory responsibilities as directed:
* Fill and complete price requisitions for other services and departments
* Maintain shelf stock
* Check, price and shelve incoming medications and supplies
* Code and/or price miscellaneous charges
* Enter charges and credits into the computer system
* Process invoices and purchase orders
* Remove outdated medications from stock on a monthly basis
* Counts, packages and labels unit doses for inspection by the pharmacist and fill routine orders for non-prescription pharmaceuticals
* Able to recognize and identify various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms and routes of administration
* Preserve patient confidential information
* Understand the pharmacy workflow for first doses and Omnicell refills
* Understand the pharmacy workflow for medication returns and medication disposal
