JoulA(c) company history timeline

1965

JOULÉ (a scientific term referring to a unit of energy) was established in 1965 by Emanuel N. Logothetis, the son of a Greek restaurateur.

1971

In 1971 he suggested the formation, following the big bang, of numerous objects containing as much as one billion tons of mass but occupying only the space of a proton.

1972

Logothetis expanded beyond the base of industrial customers to include the federal government, starting in 1972.

1974

In 1974 Hawking proposed that, in accordance with the predictions of quantum theory, black holes emit subatomic particles until they exhaust their energy and finally explode.

1976

By 1976 the industry would top $1 billion.

1977

Joules story starts in 1977 and was first established under the name Joule & Sons.

1979

Steffens, H. J. (1979). James Prescott Joule and the Development of the Concept of Energy.

1984

In 1984 it exceeded the $5 billion mark in annual payroll, with more than 622,000 temps employed on average each day.

1986

During the next few years JOULÉ enjoyed exceptional growth, and in 1986 the company was reincorporated and taken public in order to raise funds to pay down debt, expand its computer system, and open new offices.

1987

In 1987 Emanuel Logothetis decided at the age of 57 to retire, buy a house in Florida, and turn over the reins to his 35-year-old son--at a time when the company was coming off a strong five-year run.

1988

When Emanuel Logothetis came out retirement in August 1988 to help right the ship, his son promptly resigned, which according to a JOULÉ spokesperson came as a surprise to everyone.

He also wrote best-selling books, the most famous of which was A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (1988).

1992

The company had been strong enough, in the interim, to complete an acquisition, the January 1992 addition of Designeers Inc, a New Jersey engineering services business.

1994

In fiscal 1994 JOULÉ generated sales of $36.2 million and record a profit of more than $710,000.

1995

In fiscal 1995 JOULÉ recorded revenues of $43.6 million and net income of $938,000.

1996

JOULÉ's rising fortunes continued in 1996, when the company posted sales of $48.4 million and net income reached $1 million.

The ability of the regional company in 1996 to win the contract of a major pharmaceutical over a national competitor spoke to the strength of JOULÉ's business model.

1999

All told, fiscal 1999 was a highly successful year for JOULÉ. Revenues grew by 23.2 percent over the previous year, totaling $68.2 million.

2000

JOULÉ's stretch of strong growth continued in fiscal 2000.

2001

The company's momentum began to fall off in fiscal 2001, as the nation's economy began to struggle.

In 2001, the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease forced every rural show and event to be cancelled and left the team with lots of stock and nowhere to sell it.

2002

2002 was a year of generational change and a symbolic milestone: after completing their studies, Ove Petersen and Heiner Gärtner, who would go on to become the founders of GP Solar and later founders of GP JOULE, took over the control of their respective parents’ agricultural businesses.

2002 saw Tom back at the shows where he began building a list of customers to provide a direct mail order service.

2003

Although tough times continued into 2003, JOULÉ was still healthy enough to complete an acquisition, picking up Wennik&Motta, a $70 million New England staffing firm that specialized in the placement of marketing and creative talent.

He opened the first mail order store in Market Harborough, and launched the Joules website soon after in 2003.

2004

The latter project was erected in 2004 and recognized then as the world’s largest thin-film utility-scale installation (5MW), on an area of seven hectares.

2008

By 2008, the two partners had completed biogas and other PV projects with their company GP Energiekonzept, a side project of theirs, which they were managing alongside the day-to-day operations of their agricultural businesses.

2011

The company grew further internationally starting late 2011, with the opening of offices in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and San Mateo (California, USA). GP JOULE has since built an increasing North American presence and has successfully completed projects in this market from coast to coast.

2016

In 2016 this continued success led to Joules’ flotation on the stock market to raise further investment for more store openings and strengthening the collections Joules offer.

2018

Stephen Hawking died on March 14, 2018.
