**Overview**
As a software engineer intern at GitHub, you will enhance the collaboration experience at GitHub by working closely with a community of engineers and designers with a distributed, diverse and passionate team delivering the services that millions of developers depend on. We are looking for talented individuals to join us for an internship in 2026. In this role, you will design, develop and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services. This is a remote summer internship for 12 consecutive weeks with start dates between May-June 2026 with an onsite week during the internship.
**Responsibilities**
+ Develop high-performance, reliable, testable and maintainable code.
+ Participate in all aspects of software development activities, including design, coding, code review, testing, bug fixing, and code/API documentation.
+ Collaborate with engineers and participate in daily or weekly stand ups and meetings.
+ Work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced development team, with clear, positive, and constructive communication.
**Qualifications**
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Currently in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or similar field with an expected conferral date between December 2026 and August 2027.
+ Available to work full time for a minimum of 12 weeks while not concurrently enrolled in coursework.
+ Track record of working both independently and collaboratively
+ Experience with two or more of the following skill sets:Ruby/RailsGo and related tooling Database Management Systems, preferably MySQLREST APIsReact, Python or NodeJS
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
+ Experience with Git CLI, GitHub client or other version control platform for collaborative development

**Compensation Range**
The base salary range for this job is USD $32.16 - USD $85.38 /Hr.
These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.

Job Summary

Job Responsibilities

Capital Technology Group (CTG) is thrilled to welcome a new cohort of ambitious undergraduate and graduate students for our Summer 2026 Software Development Internship. This internship is hybrid, with 2-3 days in the Silver Spring, Maryland office each week and the rest remote. The program is full time at 40 hours per week and runs for 8 weeks from June 22 through August 14.
As a Software Development Intern, you'll own features and contribute to projects that support mission-critical work. You'll collaborate in a small engineering team, get mentorship from CTG technical leads, and gain hands-on experience building applications with modern technologies, including AWS cloud services, contemporary frameworks, and agile development practices. Your work will be meaningful, your contributions visible, and your learning immediate!
Throughout the summer, you'll join a weekly speaker series with CTG engineers and leaders, exploring software fundamentals, DevOps, data workflows, and user-centered design. You'll also participate in career growth training, including resume development, interviewing, and networking. The internship culminates with a final presentation where you showcase the projects you built, the skills you developed, and the impact of your work.

Responsibilities
Build and enhance software applications as part of a collaborative, agile team working in Scrum sprints, taking ownership of features that make a real impact
Attend daily stand-ups and other scheduled team meetings to stay aligned, share progress, and collaborate effectively
Work on exciting technical projects involving software development, data analysis, and cloud technologies
Collaborate with other interns and team members on group tasks, problem-solving, and peer learning opportunities
Participate in technical discussions, brainstorming sessions, and code reviews to learn directly from industry experts during weekly speaker sessions
Go into the office 2-3 times per week to connect with the team, participate in hands-on activities, and engage in in-person learning
Present your work throughout the internship and showcase your contributions, skills, and growth in an end-of-summer final presentation
Requirements
US Citizen
Living in the DC Metro area
College student majoring in Computer Science or a related field (priority given to rising seniors)
At least two past software development projects uploaded to an accessible Git repository (school or personal projects demonstrating strong technical skills)
Familiarity with Java or Python
Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React
Comfortable navigating the Linux shell and using Git
Strong communication skills, teamwork, and a passion for problem-solving
Interest in building a professional portfolio and expanding your network
A proactive, collaborative mindset with a drive to learn and innovate
Nice to Have
Public-facing sites, apps, or demos you've created yourself
Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) or modern software frameworks

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING CO-OP ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work on job assignments related to area of engineering discipline focus
Perform routine tasks under close supervision using well established standards, procedures and drawings
Students will be exposed to design processes as well as various office and field procedures

Education:
Civil engineering major at an accredited university is preferred. Civil Engineering Technology or other Engineering Majors desiring a civil engineering career path will be considered.

We are now accepting resumes for Summer 2026 internships. Opportunities are available in various engineering disciplines such as civil, environmental, water resources, transportation, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Additionally, internships are offered in planning, IT, human resources, marketing, and office services.
These internships are open to current undergraduate students from freshmen through juniors who are pursuing careers in fields related to our industry. Positions are available at various T&M office locations and typically run from late May through August.
Please note that in-person attendance at our office locations is required for this position. Specific schedules will be discussed and decided prior to your internship.
Ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:
Enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program.
Previous internship experience is advantageous.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
Demonstrates a professional demeanor, appearance, and attitude.
Strong analytical, interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
For engineering-specific internships:
Pursuing a degree in Engineering or a closely related field.
Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
