Knowledge: Requires a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology as related to Obstetrical ultrasound. Requires comprehensive knowledge of procedures and protocols followed in conducting ultrasound examinations. Knowledge and advanced skills in using all equipment in department.
Education:
Associate's degree and successful completion of an approved curriculum in diagnostic ultrasound.
Work Experience:
At least five (5) years of clinical experience in diagnostic obstetrical ultrasound. Current and active registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) in obstetrics and fetal echocardiography. Meets criteria for SDMS Advanced Practice Sonographer status

Maintain electronic library of teach/training cases for use by sonographers, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
Ability to develop and maintain templates for data searches related to obstetrical ultrasound and statistical reports.
Required Licensure, Certification:
Current and active registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) in obstetrics and fetal
echocardiography. Certified in first trimester screening with the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF).
Working Conditions:
Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, radiation, and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
Work may require the use of lab coats, uniforms and/or protective clothing including gowns, gloves, masks and eye gear.
Position requires the ability to assist the patient on and off the examination table and to also assist the patient into proper positioning to obtain diagnostic results.
The position will require moving and lifting of supplies and equipment as needed, as well as the ability to move the ultrasound unit for portable examinations.
Salary Range: Minimum $44.61 per hour - Maximum $73.66 per hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

The Perinatal Sonographer provides safe and effective ultrasound services to OB/GYN patients with specific attention to the specialized procedures unique to Perinatal medicine. Performs and interprets ultrasounds within the scope of the job. Together with the physician, develops final diagnostic impression. Properly documents all procedures according to policy.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

1. Collaborates with patients, significant others, physicians and other ancillary departments to become a multidisciplinary healthcare team with the goal to provide care that is continuous and well- coordinated.
Consults and communicates with other departments in professional manner. Plans delivery of care according to patient activity and staff competencies. Appropriately communicates ultrasound results to referring - physician. Demonstrates collaborative efforts between L & D, Antepartum, and postpartum units and delivers services timely. Demonstrates understanding of safety, health and morale needs of customers/co-workers by taking steps to ensure those needs are met. Maintains a clean and organized work area. Prioritizes work and adjusts priorities based on changing situations. Responds effectively in emergency situations.
2. Performs standard and specialized perinatal ultrasound procedures.
Working independently to optimize efficiency and productivity, selects and prepares equipment and supplies and performs comprehensive and complete diagnostic exams. Documents procedures for medical records. Provides and stores imaged medical records via M.O. Disks and VHS tapes. Generates detailed computerized sonogram reports. Participates accurate ultrasound guidance for diagnostic and therapeutic exams and participates in ultrasound interpretation with provider, contributing technical, professional knowledge and observation to the final diagnostic impression. Responds in an appropriate time frame when L&D, antepartum and postpartum units request services. Performs specialized perinatal ultrasound procedures including high quality anatomic surveys through the use of extensive - knowledge of fetal anatomy with recognition of normal and abnormal findings and/or pathology. Performs accurate nuchal translucency measurements in accordance with criteria set by FMF and SMFM to insure high quality first trimester screening. Follows appropriate scan protocol for ultrasound Doppler exams including middle cerebral, ductus venosus and uterine arteries unless otherwise directed by Perinatologist and in accordance with American Institute of Medicine. Performs 3D/4D scans using equipment knowledge and understanding of MPR scan planes (sagittal, coronal, transverse) to produce a diagnostic image. Actively participates in continued re-certification and audit process for NT first trimester screening program as required by FMF and SMFM.
3. Provides comprehensive care to patient requiring medical imaging services in an organized and systematic manner according to policy.
Properly identifies patient. Obtains and documents patient history and pertinent information. Appropriately educates and explains procedures to patients. Prepares patient for procedures. Assesses patient for risk factors and logs patient's genetic results and abnormal cases Communicates any changes in patient's condition to patient care area. Follows departmental protocol for procedures unless - specified differently by Perinatologist, clarifying and following doctors' orders Adhering to infection control standards and using proper sterile technique, produces quality diagnostic images for interpretation in timely fashion using appropriate technique and positioning. Performs all studies in accordance with ALARA (As Los as Reasonably achievable) principal set by AMA. Performs portable procedures as well as procedures in the OR. Acts as a patient advocate and upholds patient rights. Protects the privacy of patients and employees.
4. Uses equipment and resources appropriately.
Operates medical imaging equipment properly and safely using department standards for reporting malfunctions or problems. Selects and modifies technical factors as necessary. Follows TJC - requirements for management of hazardous materials. Maintains an appropriate level of supplies in work area as needed. Follows appropriate protocols to ensure the safety of self and others.

Under limited supervision performs a variety of examinations utilizing diagnostic ultrasound in accordance with American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) guideline to assist the attending physician with diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.
- Operates technical ultrasound equipment and supplies sound waves to patients in accordance with standard operating procedures and according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Identifies all sonograms by recording patient name, date, and time. Identifies anatomical structures accurately in computer system.
- Cleans and disinfects ultrasound equipment according to infection control standards. Calibrates ultrasound equipment for correct exposure and magnification parameters. Performs minor maintenance on equipment, as needed.
- Assists physicians in performing invasive procedures, i.e. amniocentesis, CVS, lidocaine injections, and other fetal intervention procedures by handling equipment and preparing instrument trays under the direct supervision of the physician.
- Communicates effectively with patients, nurses, and physicians. Communicates information regarding sonography procedures requiring patient preparation.
- Completes records accurately, Enters patient information in reporting system, accurately and completely.
- Assists the receptionist and other support staff with routine office duties, as needed.
- Answers telephone, assists or direct callers.
- Instructs Ultrasound Technology students and residents and any other visitors on ultrasound procedures and techniques by demonstrating and explaining such.
- Precepts and mentors new staff as assigned by the Fetal US Coordinator/ Nurse Manager.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of fetal growth patterns, anomalies and associate pattern of anomalies.
- Articulates basic information to patient maintaining professional communication, sensitivity to potential diagnosis/abnormality. Provide client support as necessary.
- Attends in-service training programs and other relevant training sessions for professional growth and development and to meet professional registry requirements.
- Actively participates in unit based performance improvement initiatives. Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from an AMA and/or CAAHP approved school of Ultrasound Technology required.
Registered in Obstetrics and Gynecology or eligible for registry by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers required.
Registry in OB/GYN expected within one year; NT certification expected within 2 years.
CPR certification is required.
One (1) year of experience performing diagnostic ultrasound studies preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of obstetrical principles and practices, including differentiation of cross-sectional anatomy and setting-up and maintaining a sterile field is required. Knowledge of ultrasound techniques and practices is required.
Ability to operate routine ultrasound equipment is required. Ability to utilize clinical reporting systems/electronic medical records.
Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Knowledge of PACS/reporting system to manage patient information.
Ability to help patients to get on and off table approximately 30% of the time. Able to push wheelchairs, stretchers, and/or beds.
Ability to push/pull mobile ultrasound equipment of approximately 100 lbs. 10% of the time in order to perform portable exams.
Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease using the appropriate "Universal Precautions" and other safety procedures.
Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to work with patients, medical and nursing personnel.

POSITION SUMMARY
Conducts vascular ultrasound, examinations to locate, evaluate, and record pertinent anatomical, pathological, and functional data. Principal Duties:
1. Explains process to patient and instructs and assists patient in assuming physical position for examination. Responds to patient's concerns and questions.
2. Demonstrates appropriate assessment skills prior to performing the ultrasound procedure and notifies the Radiologist, when appropriate:
a. Patient identification
b. Clinical condition (i.e., pregnant, isolation, risk to fall, etc.)

14. Image Management
a. Processes film digitally, and
b. Follows procedures to label and store images and film

Vascular Technologist (PRN) - Scheduled as needed
Main Function
The Vascular Technologist (VT) reports to the Vascular Lab Supervisor and performs all required ultrasound and clinical evaluations at a technical level requiring limited supervision. The VT maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase the level of understanding and knowledge of the field of vascular disease and new procedures as they evolve.
Duties and Responsibilities
PRN - Vascular Sonographer position for our UMMC Downtown and Midtown Campus Vascular Labs; variable shifts as needed.
Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic vascular laboratory examinations (including duplex imaging of lower and upper extremity arteries and veins; abdominal vessels: aorta/renal/hepatic/IVC; carotid and intracranial arteries; physiological examinations utilizing photoplethysmograpy, segmental and digital blood pressures and treadmill exercise testing) by properly operating complex ultrasound equipment, cameras, recorders and other patient assessment equipment such as Doppler and duplex ultrasound machines. Selects appropriate equipment and transducer frequency/size for proper examination. Correctly identifies and records appropriate anatomical, pathological and diagnostic images. Differentiates normal from abnormal and recognizes artifacts.
Accurately documents and communicates test findings to appropriate personal by:
Reviewing each completed examination for completeness, technical accuracy and proper accurate measurements.
Reporting abnormal results immediately to referring physicians, being sure to document particulars regarding such communication in the patient's chart and in the hospital and laboratory record systems according to hospital and department policy and procedure.
Explaining disease patterns and writing preliminary interpretations of test results for nursing personnel and physicians.
Preparing hard copies of test results on appropriate report forms for interpretation and signature by the Director of the laboratory.
Completing consultation sheets recording results of exams, including VT's technical impressions, for both inpatients and outpatients in accordance with departmental and hospital procedure.
Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients under the VT's care. Identifies each patient and reviews each patient's requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis and all demographic information. Assesses patient condition through record review, communication with attending personal and patient interviews to identify proper patient care practices. Prepares patients for examination and explains procedures to patients. Utilizes special equipment and/or procedures as necessary.
Understands and utilizes a variety of computer systems within the laboratory and hospital during the performance of duties as necessary.
Assists supervisor in overseeing duties of department secretary/clerical staff by answering questions and providing general directions. Assists with patient scheduling, forwarding reports to director for approval, billing processes, filing, etc. as necessary.
Performs assigned duties in a manner that ensures the quality and continuity of patient care within the vascular laboratory. Follows protocol and is able to deviate from standard techniques when clinically necessary. Facilitates thorough, cooperative, safe and efficient workflow in the vascular laboratory. Understands when to seek advice.
Maintains adequate supplies. Ensures that equipment and work areas are kept in clean conditions and proper working order. Reports all safety hazards and/or equipment malfunctions to supervisor immediately. Interacts on a technical level with internal biomedical engineering personnel when assessing equipment problems and with external medical service representatives when demonstrating new equipment.
Supports the laboratory accreditation/reaccreditation processes according to requirements of Intersocietal Commission of Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICVAL) and the Joint Commission.
Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills necessary in communicating with departmental staff, hospital personnel, physicians, patients, family members and visitors. Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospital, referral and commercial agencies.
Maintains current credentials and updates technical expertise in the field of ultrasound and vascular technology by participating in conferences, symposia and seminars and reading relevant technical literature.

Education:

Satisfactory completion of a formal vascular training program (2-4 years) and registry eligible with application for current year.
Graduate of accredited diagnostic ultrasound training program (2-4 years) with one full additional year of full time clinical experiences.
Two years of college with emphasis on the biological sciences with two years experience in a dedicated vascular laboratory and registry eligible with application for current year.
RVT (preferred) by the ARDMS (active status), RVS by the CCI or registry eligible with application during current year. If eligible, Registry must be obtained within first twelve months of employment.
