The Grounds Maintenance Laborer maintains the grounds of public property such as buildings, parking areas and greenhouses, and repairs structures and equipment, performing one or more of the following tasks: Mows grass, using walking-type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs.), trim hedges and edges around walkways, flowerbeds, and wells, using hedge trimmers, clippers and edging tools Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth, using shears and other hand tools, sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide. Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs, watering lawn and shrubs during dry periods, using hose or activating sprinkler system Collects and burns or carts away leaves, paper or other litter Removes snow from walkways, driveways, roads, or parking lots, using shovel and snow blower, spreads salt on walkways and other areas Repairs and paints fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildings, assists in the repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment, and may clean comfort stations, offices, workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping, and polishing. All duties must be performed within the specified safety regulations of the company and the position. May perform other duties as assigned. Requirements The incumbent performs work primarily in a setting out of doors and must be able to frequently stand, walk, and sit during extended periods. These requirements are necessary to operate riding mowers to cut and trim grass, plant vegetation, rake, shovel, etc. Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle, in order to load and unload materials and equipment Must be able to alert oneself to safety hazards and have a method of communication so that the individual and those around can understand and respond Must identify colors, as driving and operating power equipment is required. Exposure to various temperatures and weather including snow, rain, wind, dust, dirt and the like. Vison and hearing must be within normal parameters with or without correction. Requirements HS Diploma or Equivalent Ability to pass a Federal Background Investigation and maintain clearance 2+ years in lawn/pavement care and maintenance in an industrial, public, or commercial campus setting.
