Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Construction Assistant Project Manager to join our Civil Group. The Civil Group does the excavation work for our renewables and site development teams. The person we seek will interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remain flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Aptitude to anticipate problems, critical issues, and opportunities as they arise; along with the capability to creatively problem solve and bring together viable solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are vital, with attention to detail equally important.
The Assistant Project Manager will partner with the project manager from bid preparation through final client acceptance. Will also lead, coach, and mentor project team members. The Civil Group does the excavation work for our renewables and site development teams.
Location: Any home base location in the U.S.
Travel: Candidates must be willing to travel anywhere throughout the United States (with regular rotations home every month). 100% travel required
RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform cost control and financial management
Work with Preconstruction on project estimate and schedule
Coordinate scopes of work
Review and compile pay applications, change requests, and other project financial documentation
Partner with the Project Manager or Construction Executive
Draft client proposals
Contract administration and management
Award subcontracts
Provide direction to the project team for safe and timely project completion
Act as liaison for project engineers, mentor, and coach others
Provide job assignments and manage career development
Direct responsibilities and guide Field Engineer(s) and Project Engineer(s)
Manage subcontractors and suppliers for the project
Oversee budget for and make recommendations for subcontractors and trade partners
Lead project buyout with subcontractors and trade partners
Facilitate and lead meetings between subcontractors related to project coordination
Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
Perform on-site Project Manager duties on small scope projects
Implement a quality plan that ensures the customer's specified performance criteria in design and construction
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, or Architectural Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent experience
Minimum five years of excavation experience
Experience with large self-perform excavation projects preferred
Supervisory or leadership experience preferred
Preference for candidates with experience in one or more of the following: commercial construction, renewable energy project development, EPC contracting, or emerging technologies
Site development- data centers experience preferred
Proven ability to assist with all responsibilities for large excavation projects
Renewable or site development experience preferred
Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
Possess a basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
Microsoft Office, project, and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
100% travel required, with rotations home monthly.

The base pay range for this role is $99,500 - $134,300. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.

Key Responsibilities
* Identify construction projects using lead generation tools, industry networks, and client outreach.

* Coordinate subcontractors and material orders to maintain project timelines.
* Serve as the main point of contact for project stakeholders, maintaining clear and timely communication throughout.
* Monitor budgets, production reports, accounts payable/receivable, and change orders to ensure profitability.
* Address and resolve any project-related issues including disputes, compliance matters, and inspections.
* Conduct regular site visits to ensure progress, quality, and safety.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or related field preferred.
* 3+ years of combined experience in estimating, field supervision, and/or project management in heavy civil construction (roads, utilities, etc.).
* Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry best practices.
* Proficiency in estimating and project management software, particularly B2W and Viewpoint (a plus).
* Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills; able to manage relationships with crews, clients, vendors, and government officials.
* Willingness to travel as needed throughout Central and Western Minnesota, Northern Iowa, and Eastern Dakotas.

+ Planning, coordinating, communicating, and facilitating activities of several disciplines on multiple projects from concept through completion.
+ Collaborating and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders and partners.

**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction management or related field from an accredited institution.
+ Minimum 5 years related experience, including 3 or more years delivering projects specifically focused on fire protection.
+ Customer-focused with good relationship-building and conflict resolution skills.
+ Ability to make thoughtful, informative and persuasive presentations to clients.

Examine all construction documents for appropriate construction details, completeness of information, potential design deficiencies, code violations, constructability, etc.
Ensure project costs are properly controlled and forecasted from initial buyout through final closeout and payment. This includes monitoring and keeping buyout logs up to date, change order logs, cost reports, etc.
Confirm the review, approval, and processing of payment applications are submitted, received, and funds are dispersed promptly and accurately to subcontractors and suppliers.
Assist the Project Manager with:
Obtaining construction easements, access, and other agreements as necessary.
Drafting agendas, scheduling meetings, distributing meeting minutes, and providing weekly project updates.
Coordinating all closeouts including financial, punch list, prefinal and final inspections.
Initiating and maintaining all project schedules, scheduling tools, and programs.
Document and maintain all project reporting including, but not limited to:
Contract documents, specifications, geotechnical reports, permits, clarifications, field sketches, inspections, daily field reports, sign-in sheets, meeting minutes, submittal log, RFI log, change order logs and safety meeting reports.
Provide notices as required to document substandard performance by subcontractors.
Attend meetings as necessary.
Education & Experience
Minimum 2 years' experience in residential and mixed-use building construction.
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Science, Architecture, Business Administration or relevant major preferred.
