Purpose This staff position requires working with personnel and students conducting structural engineering research and working with structural steel reinforced concrete and timber. Many of the researchers are students who have limited construction experience, and this position will provide assistance in the safe and efficient fabrication and construction of these experiments. Responsibilities Heavy equipment operation (forklift/overhead crane). Fabrication and construction of test setups/specimens. Assist with electronics and hydraulic configuration. Direct supervision of student researchers to promote and instruct safe working space . Other related functions as assigned. Required Qualifications High school graduation or GED. Four years of experience in construction related fields, maintenance of equipment or apparatus of the type related to the position. Vocational training in a related field is desirable. Skill in the use of metal and/or woodworking fabrication equipment is desirable. Experience with light welding, light electronics, hydraulics (MTS Systems controllers, actuators, and load frames), and heavy equipment operation (forklift and/or overhead crane) is desirable. If candidate does not have the required training or experience, willingness to learn in the position is required. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Candidate must be knowledgeable and diligent in standard safety protocols related to construction or shop practices. Candidate must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well as a team member and independently. Candidate must be able to understand and speak English. Salary Range $60,000 + depending on qualifications Working Conditions Working environment is in a large-scale structural engineering research laboratory at the Pickle Research Campus (PRC), as well as the area surrounding the laboratory. The main testing areas of the laboratory are not air conditioned. Position includes exposure to mechanical, hydraulic, chemicals, and electrical hazards. Position will necessitate light to moderate lifting. Occasional work may involve field instrumentation of bridges or other structures. The position requires occasional work outdoors year around. The position also requires walking and standing on paved concrete or asphalt surfaces for multiple hours and working at height using ladders and/or lifts.
