Under supervision, candidates will inspect, maintain, adjust and repair passenger and freight elevator systems; maintain adequate elevator service to developments; provide safe elevator service to NYCHA residents. Duties shall include but not be limited to the following:
1. Lubricate and clean all components of hydraulic and electric elevator systems.
2. Make adjustments as required to contactors and controllers in the electrical and hydraulic elements of elevator systems.
3. Inspect and check doors, cable rails, bumpers, safeties, overloads, relays, sheaves and governors to assure continued safe operations.
4. Re-rope and re-wire elevator systems as required.
5. Check out troubles in all types of elevator and escalator systems.
6. Perform necessary adjustments and/or repairs to all elevator mechanical and electrical components and their control systems.
7. Inspect, maintain, adjust and repair escalators, platform lifts, conveyors and dumbwaiters.
8. Operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

Job Summary:
The Mobile Maintenance Mechanic "B" possess the ability to diagnose and repair all but the most complicated and technical repairs to Mobile Equipment. Has extensive knowledge and significant experience in repairing internal combustion engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems. Can work independently to diagnose, identify, correct, repair and return equipment to service. Displays a high level of responsibility towards the well-being and care of the mobile equipment fleet.
Major Job Responsibilities:
* Rebuild major components (engine, transmission, pumps, cylinders, motors and electrical systems) to manufactures specifications
* Determine causes of failure and implement strategies or corrective measures to ensure repeated failures do not occur
* Use torches, presses, pullers, winches, jacks, lifts and other mechanical devices properly and within capacities
* Use tools properly and understands which tools are required for each repair
* Cleaning of radiators and filter housings with compressed air (compression operation)
* Operate vehicles and mobile equipment including fuel trucks, lube trucks, forklifts, pumps, light towers, electrical tools and hoists
* Complete minor paperwork including inspections, oil sample analysis and reports as needed
* Perform extended manual labor including but not limited to lifting, shoveling, stocking shelves, sweeping, cleaning and other routing activities associated with the maintenance of the equipment and the maintenance work area
* Ability to take direction and follow specific policies and procedures when required
* Perform minor repairs to equipment, ensure equipment is fit for service, be able to perform pre-start inspections and fluid level checks to ensure equipment is safe for operation
* Perform other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications:
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
* Proficient knowledge and application of diagnostic tools including multimeters, computers, gauges, probes, scopes, calipers, and other measurement and diagnostic tools required for the repair and maintenance of mobile equipment
Ability to communicate issues and concerns about equipment to supervision and outside dealers or technicians when required
* Physical ability to perform heavy labor

The Class A Mechanic is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repair on a variety of waste collection vehicles and equipment, including front loaders, rear loaders, roll-offs, and transfer station equipment. This role ensures all fleet vehicles operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT and environmental regulations. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong diagnostic skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel and gasoline-powered refuse trucks and equipment.
Service hydraulic systems, air brakes, electrical systems, steering, suspensions, and drivetrain components.
Perform preventive maintenance, scheduled inspections, and DOT compliance checks.
Use diagnostic software and tools to troubleshoot fault codes and mechanical failures.
Conduct road tests to verify repairs and ensure vehicle performance and safety.
Maintain accurate service records and complete required documentation for compliance and audits.
Respond to road calls and emergency breakdowns as needed.
Ensure adherence to environmental and safety protocols, including proper disposal of fluids and hazardous materials.
Collaborate with drivers and operations staff to address recurring vehicle issues.

Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL with air brake endorsement (or ability to obtain).
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and computerized diagnostic tools.
Familiarity with refuse truck body systems such as Heil, McNeilus, Labrie, or New Way.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and vehicle codes.
Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Skills and Certifications:
ASE Certifications (T-Series or H-Series preferred)
Welding and fabrication experience
