Diesel Apprentice Program Details: The Apprentice Program is competency-based, meaning there is no set time for the program to last. During this time, the following tools will be utilized to support the on-the-job learning experience: * Competency List - The Competency list will show what you have completed and what you still need to learn. * Internal Training - "In-house" training led by competent mechanics while you are in the program. * Manufacturer Training - You will have the opportunity, schedule willing, to attend manufacturer training. * Mentoring - You will always work under a mentor or senior mechanic. This person will help you learn and understand the trade and the industry. * Reviews - You will schedule quarterly reviews with your leadership team. This will give you the time to review your performance and achievements. Once you have completed all of the competencies and completed 144 hours of classroom training per year, you will be promoted out of the Apprentice Program. What You'll Do: Promote Safety. Per MSHA and Vulcan standards, take an active role in prioritizing safety for yourself and others throughout the operation at all times. Repair and Maintain Mobile Equipment. Service, repair, adjust, and test all mobile equipment operating throughout the plant to maximize performance and limit downtime. Inspect Equipment and Materials. Inspect all mobile equipment to identify and troubleshoot the cause of errors. Perform repairs to address problems when necessary. Handle and Move Objects. Safely handle, install, position, and move parts, materials, and industrial hand tools throughout the shop and plant. Document and Record Information. Ensure that correct and accurate documentation regarding all mobile equipment is completed daily and monthly. Enter and maintain service reports for all the mobile equipment in written or electronic form. Perform General Physical Activities. Perform physical activities that require moving your whole body and considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Skills You'll Need: Experience. Previous experience working on diesel or heavy construction equipment is preferred. Additional vocational/trade school training in a mechanical field is also preferred. Knowledge of Best Practices. Knowledge of general principles and practices of servicing heavy construction equipment is preferred. Flexibility. Must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises. Mechanical Skills. Good mechanical and mathematical ability including the ability to read, interpret, and analyze blueprints and schematics. Good organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task, plan, and manage time effectively. Good verbal and written communication skills, both within the company and with customer logbooks and other correspondence. Demonstrated experience working as a team including communicating with all levels of a diverse workforce. Ability to obtain and maintain forklift certification The ability to work independently, without regular supervision.
