Minimum Education and/or Experience Required (Minimum Job Requirements, Education Requirements, Experience): High School Diploma / GED and five (5) years of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting, OR Associate degree in life science or healthcare related field and three (3) years of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting; OR, bachelor's degree in a life science or healthcare related field and one (1) year of surgical or procedural experience working within a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting. Relevant experience may include work in the operating room, critical care or emergency medicine, bio skills or anatomy labs, willed body donation programs, medical examiner's offices, veterinary clinics, or other settings involving hands-on procedural work. Demonstrated proficiency of surgical or procedural techniques, instrumentation, and specimen handling, required as well as proficiency in problem-solving, organization and self-direction. Additional Experience and/or Qualifications (Has Achieved Competency in the Following Areas, Job Knowledge and Additional Considerations): Must have the ability to work independently, with minimal supervision. Ability to be flexible and adapt to unpredictable situations. Flexibility in work hours that includes occasional off hours, evenings and weekends. Excellent problem solving, communication, and organizational skills. In laboratories where animal tissue is utilized, experience with animal procedures is preferred. In laboratories that work closely with the simulation centers, experience with simulation equipment is preferred. Licensure/Certification Required: Certified Surgical Technician, Certified Forensic Autopsy Technician, or Veterinary Technician license with surgical or dissection experience preferred.

Job Purpose: Assists in all practices and procedures of surgical support including patient check-in, patient prep, surgical prep, venipuncture, administering vaccinations, laboratory work, treatments of animals as indicated by the veterinarian for HSSA's Spay/Neuter Clinic. monitoring patient during surgery, recovery of patient after surgery and patient discharge at the end of the surgical day. Assists with community vaccination clinics and wellness clinic. Cleans instruments and wraps surgical packs. Maintains the highest standards of record keeping, facility cleanliness, sanitary conditions and safety standards. Enters data that builds medical records, and prepares end of day paperwork including preparing medications. Assists veterinarians in recheck exams. Provides constant humane care and handling of the animals. Answers animal related questions, especially those instructions related to procedures performed at the HSSA clinic. Utilizes care to develop cooperative and helpful relationship with other employees and do other work as required. Assists in the training of new employees as directed.

Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Minimum Qualifications Basic knowledge of routine technical/functional procedures. Basic computer skills to include knowledge of Internet software, order processing system, and Microsoft Office software. Must be detail oriented and work as a team player. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to compute simple mathematical computations. Ability to apply common sense to carry out simple one or two step instructions. Ability to organize and perform precise and accurate work when dealing with samples and chemicals. Preferred Qualifications High School Diploma, GED or equivalent experience.
