Full-Time | Friday - Sunday, 3pm with call 7am-7am | Pascagoula Hospital | Mississippi United States The primary function of the Surgical Technologist is as a "scrub technologist" in the surgical suite and other clinical areas. The surgical technologist, under the guidance of the physician and registered nurse, is responsible for implementation of AST Standards which provide for safe and effective techniques and processes for quality patient care. The surgical technologist must possess strong interpersonal skills and a surgical conscience. The Surgical Technologist helps in the preparation of the room before surgery. He/She is responsible for all items required for their surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures. Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program required. License: N/A Certification: Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred. Must complete BCLS certification by the end of position orientation. Must maintain current BCLS certification. Experience: Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred. Reports to: OR Lead Coordinator and Patient Care Manager. Supervises: None. Physical Demands: Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities. Work is moderately active: involves standing with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Employee is responsible for safely moving, lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patients, with assistance. Safe lifting practice is expected in all areas of job performance and employees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, using available assistance, i.e., lifting devices or additional staff. Work is subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard. Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision. Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends. Mental Demands: Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels.Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations. Special Demands: Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.). Must have intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook and Word. Must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment based on approved scope of practice and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages. Must possesses a thorough knowledge of AST process standards. Must have a valid driver license as job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area with the employee providing his/her own transportation.

The Surgical First Assistant is trained to assist surgeons of all types, in the operating room. They assist in operations, harvesting of saphenous vein, exposure of the surgical field, cutting, and in suturing. They also position and move patients. * Assists in necessary preparations prior to surgery. * Demonstrates principles of safe positioning of the surgical patient. Provides visualization of the operative site. * Demonstrates appropriate techniques to assist with the closure of body parts at the discretion of surgeon. * Anticipates the needs of the surgeon. * Demonstrates knowledge in emergent situations. Demonstrates a professional attitude and superior organizational skills. P * erforms other related duties as assigned or requested. Maintain stamina for prolonged standing. Education - Specialized training to become a surgical assistant is two years long. The first year is a didactic year during which the student learns anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and introduction to the operating room. The second year is clinical year, where the student rotates to different hospitals, learning surgical skills from both surgeons and surgical assistants in practice. In the second year, students will participate in numerous operations of all types which range from general surgery to specialized areas. Once the curriculum is completed, the graduate is the eligible to sit for the written boards for certification as a surgical assistant through the National Surgical Assistant Association.
