Our Team. Our Passion. Our Approach. The Lead Controls Engineer will be responsible for driving design, functionality and testing of upper-level automated sortation systems. The candidate must lead and assist in the design and programming of new and existing projects. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate skillsets for diagnosing and solving controls related issues involving I/O, hardware (Controller setup, VFDs, Comms devices) and software (PLC and HMI) feedback along with best practices electrical troubleshooting techniques. This position is focused on providing leadership, technical oversight, and mentoring to junior level engineers. The Controls Engineer IV is responsible for supporting other members of the FORTNA controls group to ensure accurate documentation, proper system functionality, adherence to approved design and customer specifications. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Write and implement modular and reuseable PLC code and assist in all on-site controls engineering tasks. * Design and develop "Human Machine Interface" (HMI) using commercially available products such as Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, or FactoryTalk Optix. * Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications. * Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives and third-party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during both the design and execution phases * Review electrical designs and provide accurate as-built drawings for approval. * Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable and consistent with organizational objectives. * Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. * May serve as a mentor to more entry level Controls Engineers. * Provide support to commissioning team members as required. * Lead a team to execute complex automated systems, provide site engineering support and complete system acceptance testing. * Interface and coordinate with other departments on requirements and standards QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent. * 7+ years of experience within an industrial controls environment which includes: * PLC programming (Rockwell required, Siemens, Schneider or other is expected) * HMI Programming (FactoryTalk View, Ignition, Wonderware, Indusoft) * 3+ years of experience developing in Ignition * Input and output device design, implementation, and troubleshooting. * Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.) * Low voltage electrical design and drawing understanding and creation. * Equivalent work experience will also be considered as a substitute for education. * Experience with networked VFDs, Servos, and other motor controllers. * Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps. With minimal oversight, an Electrical Controls Technician supports and maintains the equipment used in manufacturing and all support systems. Electrical Control Technicians (ECTs) work in partnership with Operators, , Maintenance and Engineering to care for the successful operation of all electrically controlled devices on his/her shift in a safe manner. Work to effectively troubleshoot technical issues both related to maintenance and in emergency situations; Troubleshooting electrical, motor and control problems. This includes determining if a motor or electrical system, is functioning properly and is configured properly. If there is a problem, determine the proper course of action and safely implement it. Solutions may include taking voltage and amp readings, tracing wiring, evaluating relays, testing motors, evaluating health of wiring, checking breakers and fuses, evaluating sensors and determining the health of overall systems and equipment. Discuss and explain technical issues in a business environment; act professionally during times of equipment breakdown. Utilize MS Windows, Industrial Software and CMMS (EAM) on a daily basis. Assist maintenance mechanics on shift as needed. Including the performance of mechanical repairs when appropriate. In accordance with written and oral instructions, assure that the facility and the associated equipment operates safely, properly and efficiently. Ensure compliance with the Controls Change Management System where non-emergency changes are approved and documented prior to the change being made. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager - KT Innovation, the Electrical Engineer III will conduct critical and complex engineering research and development projects to support Key Technology (KT) and New Product Development (NPD) of Fitness Equipment. The Electrical Engineer III will perform advanced development, innovation, and critical problem solving to enhance Johnson Health Tech's product portfolio. This position requires a highly creative and flexible individual who can stretch to support the specific needs of the development situation and manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be willing to move fast, fail early, iterate, and consistently deliver. They are never married to ideas, have a penchant for creating new IP and IP workarounds, and will help Johnson Health Tech continue to be a leader in the fitness space. This is a non-supervisory position. Responsibilities: * Understand and integrate potential new technologies, features, modalities/ergonomics into Johnson products * Create proof-of-concepts (PoC) and partner with the Product Management team for review and refinement * Evaluate and test for viability and risk mitigation * Feed new product development by successfully and smoothly transitioning PoC's to NPD engineering teams based on Asia sourcing and manufacturing * Develop and document design and specifications * Strive to move beyond the status quo with a positive, problem-solving, and can-do approach. Know which battles to win and those to compromise on * Create new intellectual property and intellectual property workarounds * Other projects as assigned Requirements Education: * A bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited institution in Electrical Engineering Experience: * Minimum of 5 years professional experience in electrical hardware design * Proficiency technical troubleshooting experience * Proficiency knowledge of PCB layout best practices * Proficiency knowledge in board bring up * Proficiency with EMC/EMI requirements and mitigation techniques * Proficiency with motor control or control theory * Proficiency in system engineering * Proficiency in firmware development * Proficiency in writing technical documentation Other Requirements: * Ability and willingness to travel internationally, approximately 1-2 trips to Asia annually * Strong and creative problem-solving skills * Ability to work well with numerous diverse groups and individuals * Ability and desire to mentor less experienced team members * Excellent written and verbal communication skills Benefits: We offer an excellent compensation package and team-oriented work environment with growth opportunities.
