Our Team. Our Passion. Our Approach. The Controls Engineer will be responsible for commissioning of controls for conveyor and sortation systems. This position is focused on implementing site-based controls for new equipment within new or existing customer systems. To support the project scope and schedule, this position will work with other members of the FORTNA Controls group to ensure drawings and software are completed, installed, commissioned, and documented as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Write and implement machine code, integrate subsystems, and assist in all on-site commissioning efforts. * Utilize "Human Machine Interface" (HMI) using commercially available products such as Wonderware, RSView, Factory Talk view and Ignition. * Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications under the supervision of Sr. Level Controls Engineers * Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives and third-party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during both the design and commissioning phases * Review electrical designs and provide accurate as-builts drawings for approval. * Individually or as a team commission complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and complete system acceptance testing. QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. * 2-4 years of experience within an industrial controls environment which includes: * PLC programming (Rockwell Software preferred, Siemens software a plus) * HMI Programming (Factory Talk View preferred, Ignition a plus) * Input and output device design and implementation. * Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Devicenet, Profinet, etc.) * Low voltage electrical design and drawing creation. * Equivalent work experience will also be considered as a substitute for education. * Experience with VFDs preferred, networked a plus * Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps. SKILLS/ABILITIES: * Must be self-motivated, self-aware, detail-oriented, and results-focused. * Understanding of VFDs, induction motors, programmable logic controllers and industrial networks. * Ability to manage and execute basic system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits. * Ability to collaborate and communicate with FORTNA team members, project managers and customers in a professional written and spoken manner. * Ability to take direction from Sr. Level Controls Engineers to support the project and ensure all aspects of project goals are achieved. * Ability to produce quality designs, drawings, programs, and documentation with minimal errors. WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc. When traveling the job environment shifts to a site-based, typically industrial. When traveling this role routinely uses appropriate PPE, electrical diagnostic tools, electrical implementation tools, laptops, and networking equipment. With minimal oversight, an Electrical Controls Technician supports and maintains the equipment used in manufacturing and all support systems. Electrical Control Technicians (ECTs) work in partnership with Operators, , Maintenance and Engineering to care for the successful operation of all electrically controlled devices on his/her shift in a safe manner. ECTs are responsible for eliminating safety risks present in systems and working to troubleshoot electrical and control problems, ensuring proper hardware and software configurations for devices, ensure proper functioning of devices, use of the most current programs, performing PM's, , properly inputting data into the CMMS system, executing work orders, backing up programs and keeping prints and manuals up-to-date. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of high-voltage electrical systems in commercial plant projects. This role requires expertise in electrical engineering, a strong understanding of high-voltage systems, and a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. Key Responsibilities Design and Analysis: Lead the design and analysis of high-voltage electrical systems, ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Develop detailed electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and system layouts. Conduct power system analysis and simulations to optimize performance and reliability. Project Management and Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, architects, and other engineers to develop project timelines and ensure all electrical designs align with project requirements. Oversee the implementation of electrical systems, ensuring timely and on-budget project execution. Coordinate with contractors and subcontractors to ensure quality standards and safety protocols are met. Regulatory Compliance and Safety: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal electrical codes, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines. Provide technical oversight on electrical installation, testing, and commissioning to ensure adherence to quality and safety standards. Review and approve permits, inspections, and other regulatory documentation. Troubleshooting and Support: Provide troubleshooting expertise for electrical system issues during construction, installation, and post-project maintenance. Offer ongoing technical support and maintenance guidance for high-voltage electrical systems. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed project documentation, including design notes, change orders, test results, and project progress reports. Prepare technical reports for internal teams and clients, presenting solutions, challenges, and progress. Qualifications Education and Experience: Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. P.E. License (Professional Engineer License) in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in High Voltage Systems. A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in electrical engineering, specifically with high-voltage systems. Technical Skills: Extensive knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems and their applications in commercial plant construction. Proficiency in electrical design software, such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar tools. Familiarity with industry standards, codes, and safety regulations, including NEC (National Electrical Code), IEEE, and NFPA. Leadership and Communication Skills: Proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Strong communication skills to clearly present technical concepts to clients and stakeholders. Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to make critical decisions under tight deadlines. Certifications and Licenses: P.E. License (Professional Engineer) in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in high-voltage systems. OSHA or other relevant safety certifications are a plus.
