Our Team. Our Passion. Our Approach. The Lead Controls Engineer will be responsible for driving design, functionality and testing of upper-level automated sortation systems. The candidate must lead and assist in the design and programming of new and existing projects. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate skillsets for diagnosing and solving controls related issues involving I/O, hardware (Controller setup, VFDs, Comms devices) and software (PLC and HMI) feedback along with best practices electrical troubleshooting techniques. This position is focused on providing leadership, technical oversight, and mentoring to junior level engineers. The Controls Engineer IV is responsible for supporting other members of the FORTNA controls group to ensure accurate documentation, proper system functionality, adherence to approved design and customer specifications. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Write and implement modular and reuseable PLC code and assist in all on-site controls engineering tasks. * Design and develop "Human Machine Interface" (HMI) using commercially available products such as Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, or FactoryTalk Optix. * Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications. * Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives and third-party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during both the design and execution phases * Review electrical designs and provide accurate as-built drawings for approval. * Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable and consistent with organizational objectives. * Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. * May serve as a mentor to more entry level Controls Engineers. * Provide support to commissioning team members as required. * Lead a team to execute complex automated systems, provide site engineering support and complete system acceptance testing. * Interface and coordinate with other departments on requirements and standards QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent. * 7+ years of experience within an industrial controls environment which includes: * PLC programming (Rockwell required, Siemens, Schneider or other is expected) * HMI Programming (FactoryTalk View, Ignition, Wonderware, Indusoft) * 3+ years of experience developing in Ignition * Input and output device design, implementation, and troubleshooting. * Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.) * Low voltage electrical design and drawing understanding and creation. * Equivalent work experience will also be considered as a substitute for education. * Experience with networked VFDs, Servos, and other motor controllers. * Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps. SKILLS/ABILITIES: * Must be self-motivated, self-aware, detail-oriented, and results-focused. * Understanding of VFDs, induction motors, programmable logic controllers and industrial networks. * Demonstrates advanced understanding of project management, service management, or relationship management principles. * Advanced abilities and knowledge in practices and techniques gained through experience and exposure to complex and diverse techniques, theories, and principles. * Ability to troubleshoot and isolate controls I/O problems * Schedule, manage, and execute basic system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits. * Collaborate and communicate with FORTNA team members, project managers and customers in a professional written and spoken manner. * Provide direction and leadership to jr. level controls engineers WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc. When traveling the job environment shifts to a site-based, typically industrial. When traveling this role routinely uses appropriate PPE, electrical diagnostic tools, electrical implementation tools, laptops, and networking equipment. TRAVEL: This position requires up to 25% travel to various sites. The base salary range for this role is $100,700 to $151,100. This base salary range represents the low and high end of the base salary range for this position. Actual base salary offered will vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and performance. Salary: $120K - $150K annually Primary Functions Supervise and mentor a team of controls engineers in project execution, automation design, and technical development. Collaborate with upper management to define departmental strategies and goals. Ensure adherence to project timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Facilitate cross-functional collaboration with Sales, Operations, and Process Engineering teams. Lead recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of controls engineering staff. Implement process improvements, automation standards, and design consistency initiatives. Oversee design, programming, and testing of PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems for hygienic process applications. Review and approve control system architectures, panel layouts, and schematics. Oversee integration of electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems with process equipment. Support development of detailed descriptions of operation, I/O lists, and control narratives. Conduct internal and external design reviews for electrical and automation systems. Ensure proper application of safety circuits, interlocks, and lockout/tagout logic. Provide technical leadership in software development, instrumentation specification, and network configuration. Supervise development of control panel layouts and schematics (AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent). Collaborate with electricians and field technicians to ensure accurate wiring and system functionality. Provide on-site and remote technical support during installation, start-up, and commissioning. Troubleshoot automation and control issues to ensure efficient project completion. Evaluate and recommend control hardware, software, and instrumentation for performance and cost efficiency. Maintain accurate project documentation and customer communication in CRM systems. Respond to customer requests for information and technical support. Understand functions critical to producing margin and identify opportunities to improve profit margins. Follow-up with customers after project completion for feedback and satisfaction. Promote safety as an essential part of CSI s culture and ensure compliance with all safety and cybersecurity SOPs. Required Skills: Education/Training: Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field with 9+ years of relevant experience. Valid driver s license required. Requirements: Minimum 9 years of experience in designing and managing industrial control systems projects. Proven leadership skills with a track record of managing and developing engineering teams. Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar), HMI/SCADA development, and system integration. Strong knowledge of control panel design, electrical schematics, and instrumentation. Experience with process automation, batch, and CIP systems. In-depth understanding of industrial networks and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, etc.). Strong project management and decision-making skills. Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer relationship abilities. Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent for panel and schematic design. Willingness to travel for customer meetings, installations, and start-ups. Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance. Skills: Computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and/or database This position requires the ability to interact with employees verbally and in writing, remain in a stationary position for 80% of the workday, have close visual acuity, and constantly operate a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as a phone, copy/fax/scan machine, computer keyboard and mouse with or without reasonable accommodation. This position also requires the ability to occasionally lift, stoop, bend, and lift office products and supplies, up to 50 pounds. When at a customer site, this person may be exposed to temperature extremes both hot and cold, dust, and noise. This position is focused on implementing site-based controls for new equipment within new or existing customer systems. To support the project scope and schedule, this position will work with other members of the FORTNA Controls group to ensure drawings and software are completed, installed, commissioned, and documented as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Write and implement machine code, integrate subsystems, and assist in all on-site commissioning efforts. * Utilize "Human Machine Interface" (HMI) using commercially available products such as Wonderware, RSView, Factory Talk view and Ignition. * Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications under the supervision of Sr. Level Controls Engineers * Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives and third-party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during both the design and commissioning phases * Review electrical designs and provide accurate as-builts drawings for approval. * Individually or as a team commission complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and complete system acceptance testing. QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. * 2-4 years of experience within an industrial controls environment which includes: * PLC programming (Rockwell Software preferred, Siemens software a plus) * HMI Programming (Factory Talk View preferred, Ignition a plus) * Input and output device design and implementation. * Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Devicenet, Profinet, etc.) * Low voltage electrical design and drawing creation. * Equivalent work experience will also be considered as a substitute for education. * Experience with VFDs preferred, networked a plus * Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps. What you'll do: Automation & Controls Engineering: Perform automation controls engineering activities in support of production automation machinery and smart manufacturing, including machine automation controls, IIoT, PLC, HMI, SCADA, machine vision systems, industrial robots, computer networking, and other automation controls areas. Software Development: Write, test, debug, modify, and implement automation applications, including PLC, HMI, SCADA, SQL, and Python. Platforms include Rockwell Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View, Inductive Automation Ignition, OPC, MQTT, SQL Server, etc. Smart Factory Integration: Build SCADA/MES solutions to digitally connect machines, equipment, and devices across the plant floor. Integrate with MES, CMMS, and other enterprise systems. System Architecture: Define solution architecture, data strategies, and OT network/application cybersecurity. Connectivity & Edge Devices: Evaluate and implement equipment connectivity options using PLCs, control devices, sensors, and IIoT edge technology. Visualization & User Interfaces: Design intuitive HMIs and SCADA dashboards that provide real-time visibility into operations and equipment performance. Troubleshooting & Support: Lead diagnostics, troubleshooting, and issue resolution for automation systems in production environments. What you'll need: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field-or equivalent experience. 5+ years in automation/controls engineering, with proven expertise in PLC/HMI/SCADA development and troubleshooting. Strong knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Software. Extensive knowledge and experience developing and implementing enterprise-level Industrial IoT, SCADA, and MES applications using Inductive Automation Ignition, including Perspective, Python, and SQL scripting. In-depth understanding of IT and OT network architecture, including industrial communication protocols like Ethernet/IP, OPC, MQTT, Modbus, and TCP/IP. Ability to provide innovative solutions to complex automation and data challenges. Deep experience with connecting to and collecting data from industrial IoT devices, PLCs, manufacturing applications, and databases. Strong project management skills with the ability to drive initiatives to completion with minimal guidance. Travel 5% of the time. Preferred skills: Experienced with process historians, SQL databases, time series databases, and SQL database programming. Knowledge and experience with Data Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and predictive analytics. Programming experience in .NET, C#, Java, Node-RED, HTML, or full-stack development. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Snowflake). Knowledge and experience with Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 frameworks. Experienced with Data Analytics tools and software to process and visualize large data sets using tools like Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Python, Plotty, and Dash. Working knowledge of Unified Name Space (UNS) and ISA-95 ISA/IEC 62443 OT Cybersecurity.
