The Program
The Department
The Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences (LRES) is in the College of Agriculture and is a featured department in the statewide Montana Institute on Ecosystems. Our work spans land resources and environmental science and management, and includes cutting-edge, innovative teaching, fundamental and applied research, and highly effective outreach and service to a broad range of public and private entities. Our faculty offer broad expertise related to soils, microorganisms, insects, plants, climate and water to achieve an integrated multi-scale and multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and managing ecosystems. We address issues related to natural and managed landscapes such as crop-land, rangeland, forests, reclaimed land, polar and geothermal environments, and protected natural areas, with fundamental and applied investigations in agriculture, environmental science, land management, and natural resources. We advance scientific understanding across spatial and temporal scales, and apply this understanding for effective land management, informed adoption of sustainability practices, and broad education of students in preparation for careers in the agricultural and environmental sciences. LRES consists of 35 research and teaching faculty, about 200 undergraduate students, 25 thesis M.S., 60 online MS, and 25 Ph.D. graduate students, and 40 technical and postdoctoral scientists, and has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration within the department and across the institution and State. The Department is supported through the College of Agriculture, the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Extension Service, which work together to generate and disseminate superior knowledge and technological solutions to increase the competitiveness of Montana agricultural and natural resource enterprises.

The Program
The Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University offers and undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree program in Earth Sciences with options in Geography, Geology, Snow Science, Paleontology, and GIS/Planning.Our course listings include general topics, like Physical Geography and Geomorphology, under the Earth Science (ERTH) rubric and specialized courses, like Biogeography and Vertebrate Paleontology, under the Geology and Geography rubrics. The Earth Sciences Department invites applications for a non-tenure track position. The Earth Sciences department has a full-time faculty of 13 earth scientists, geologists and geographers. We have about 50 active graduate students in our Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences programs. Our PhD program was added in Fall 2004. There are 200+ undergraduate majors in the department, divided between geography, geology, geohydrology, gis/planning, snow science and paleontology.

The Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology is administered by the College of Agriculture and has about 30 faculty members. Faculty members are highly productive scholars with substantial research records in leading refereed journals, extramural grant funding, and high quality teaching and outreach programs. The Program
The Department
The Department of Animal and Range Sciences is one of the largest departments in the College of Agriculture with a growing student enrollment that is presently ~440 students. In addition to MS and PhD programs, we offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science (options include Livestock Management and Industry, Science, and Equine Science) and Natural Resources and Rangeland Ecology (options include Rangeland Ecology and Management and Wildlife Ecology and Management), and oversee the Dan Scott Ranch Management program and the Farrier School. We are a fully integrated department serving all three of the land grant missions of teaching, research, and extension. In addition, our program incorporates livestock operations into our teaching, research, and extension program.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana Tech is pleased to announce an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Statistics, Mathematics, or Data Science with experience and/or research interests in data science. Montana Technological University, a regionally accredited college in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, primarily offers degrees in the sciences and engineering. The Mathematical Sciences Department offers undergraduate majors in Mathematics (with options in applied mathematics and statistics) and Data Science. The primary duties of the position are to teach courses in statistics, mathematics, and data science, with a normal teaching load of 9 credits per semester. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining an active scholarly agenda, advising Statistics, Mathematics, and Data Science majors, overseeing student research projects, and participating in curriculum redesign.
Duties:
Teach 9 credits per semester of statistics, mathematics, and/or data science courses. Additional responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, advising data science, statistics, or mathematics majors, overseeing student projects, and participating in curriculum redesign.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, or Data Science awarded by August 2026
Ability to teach a wide variety of mathematics and statistics courses within the current curriculum
Effective oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous teaching experience in college level mathematics, statistics, and/or data science
Evidence of effective teaching
Experience and/or expertise with data visualization, simulation, and/or statistical methods that support our current course offerings in Data Science
Ability to teach courses using Python and R
Demonstrated research expertise in data science areas such as: machine/deep learning, big data mining and analytics, visualizing and communication data, data driven modeling and prediction, rich media data processing, database systems for analytics, quantitative social science, statistical learning, topological data analysis
