Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding. Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration. The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool. Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration. The Program
The Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University offers and undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree program in Earth Sciences with options in Geography, Geology, Snow Science, Paleontology, and GIS/Planning. Our course listings include general topics, like Physical Geography and Geomorphology, under the Earth Science (ERTH) rubric and specialized courses, like Biogeography and Vertebrate Paleontology, under the Geology and Geography rubrics. Some of our graduates find employment as technicians in fields like Geographic Information Systems and water quality assessment, but most find that a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) is necessary for a professional career.
The Department
The Earth Sciences Department invites applications for a non-tenure track position. The Earth Sciences department has a full-time faculty of 13 earth scientists, geologists and geographers. We have about 50 active graduate students in our Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences programs. Our PhD program was added in Fall 2004. There are 200+ undergraduate majors in the department, divided between geography, geology, geohydrology, gis/planning, snow science and paleontology.

Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Tenure Track, 1.0 FTE, Fall 2026. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related field (ABD may be considered) with expertise in general microbiology. The assistant professor accepting this position will be expected to lead a nationally recognized agricultural process engineering research and education program.

Value-added agriculture allows producers to capture more value for their inputs and effort by transforming agricultural commodities into higher value end products. It includes generation of new products, expanding the existing market opportunities, and identifyingnew retail markets enabling farmers to align with consumer preferences and demands. By advancing value-added agriculture, we can create new food, feed, industrial products, and high-paying jobs and increase product sales, constituting a crucial economic stimulus for the entire state. By generating value-added products from Montana's agriculture-based raw materials and processing derivatives, and advertising those products to the proper markets, we can generate more business, community awareness and economic vitality for our agricultural communities. The faculty member in this position would conduct research on, but not limited to, fiber use/transformation (hemp, straw, wool, etc.), high value end-product commodity transformation for cereals, oilseed crops or horticultural products, or food systems engineering for Montana-produced agricultural commodities. Teaching expectations will include courses that support a new degree program in agricultural & biosystems engineering.

The Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences (LRES) is in the College of Agriculture. Our work spans land resources and environmental science and management, and includes cutting-edge, innovative teaching, fundamental and applied research, and highly effective outreach and service to a broad range of public and private entities. Our faculty offer broad expertise related to soils, microorganisms, insects, plants, climate and water to achieve an integrated multi-scale and multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and managing ecosystems. All candidates must have the ability to obtain a PE or EIT license in the state of Montana. The department offers the BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering. Duties:
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and labs for the EE Department. Advise students and student projects. Initiate and sustain a research program including leadership of undergraduate and graduate students. Provide service to the campus, community, and participate in EE program development.
Required Qualifications:
BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
PhD or ABD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
An ability to obtain a PE or EIT license as an EE in Montana.
Expertise in power system dynamics, controls, and signal analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Recent industrial work experience as an electrical engineer.
College-level teaching experience with demonstrated excellent performance.
Demonstrated history of successful research and refereed publications.
