What you will do
Responsible for precertification of eligible prescription medications for inpatient and outpatient services based on medical plan documents and medical necessity. Ensures medical documentation is sufficient to meet insurer guidelines for medical necessity documentation and procedure payment.
Reviews clinical information submitted by medical providers to evaluate the necessity, appropriateness and efficiency of the use of prescription medications.
Assists with patient assistance and grant coordination for Patients for outpatient pharmacies from designated areas.
Proactively analyzes information submitted by providers to make timely medical necessity review determinations based on appropriate criteria and standards guidelines. Verifies physician orders are accurate. Determines CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10 codes for proper Prior Authorization.
Contacts insurance companies and third party administrators to gather information and organize work-flow based on the requested procedure.
Collects, reads and interprets medical documentation to determine if the appropriate clinical information has been provided for insurance reimbursement and proper charge capture.
Serves as primary contact with physicians/physician offices to collect clinical documentation consistent with insurer reimbursement guidelines. Establishes and maintains rapport with providers as well as ongoing education of providers concerning protocols for pre-certification.
Communicates information and acts as a resource to Patient Access, Case Management, and others in regard to contract guidelines and pre-certification requirements.
Performs research regarding denials or problematic accounts as necessary. Works to identify trends and root cause of issues and recommend resolutions for future processes.

Must hold a current active Pharmacist license issued by the state of Nebraska. Minimum registry of Registered Pharmacist. Must also obtain and maintain licensure as a Registered Pharmacist with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Previous experience in the specialized function of hospital/health center pharmacy services to ensure competency as an institutional staff pharmacist desirable. Knowledge of hospital policies, effective use of hospital computer system pertinent to pharmacy, work flow in the pharmacy, etc. as typically acquired through six months relevant work experience in a hospital pharmacy.
Knowledge of the specialized functions of hospital and health center pharmacy services, usually attained by completion of a hospital pharmacy residency and/or at least one year of hospital pharmacy experience.
Basic Life Support certification via American Heart Association required within six months of hire.
Attention to detail for up to 50% of work time when verifying provider orders and medications, mixing intravenous medications, dispensing medications, etc.
Analytical skills necessary to calculate proper doses for all age groups, recommend proper medications for various patient diagnoses, etc.
Communication skills necessary to be able to discuss appropriate medications for various patient diagnoses, teach patients about medications and answer all questions, teach small groups about various issues pertaining to Pharmacy, etc.
Ability to complete reports and correspondence at a professional level.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with regard to protected and sensitive information.
Ability to immediately respond to common inquiries and complaints from patients, employees and regulatory agencies.

Working conditions
Works in a well lighted and ventilated work area with minimal exposure to excessive dust, temperature, etc.
Work environment includes frequent exposure to noise and occasionally to potentially hazardous and toxic substances up to approximately 30% of work time.
Required to spend up to approximately 30% of work time seated to complete paperwork/computer work; 70% of the time is spent providing patient care and other pharmacy related tasks. Shelves in the department are required to be stocked 3 times per week. Shelf heights range from 6 inches from the ground up to 81 inches high. A 12 inch step stool is located in the department to be used to reach the highest shelves. 20 pound boxes, up to 5% of work time, are required to be stocked from floor to waist level in department and negligible weights up to 1-2 pounds are placed onto higher shelves. A med cart is used to distribute medications to the hospital, requiring up to 38 pounds of horizontal force to push over thresholds into rooms and 25 pounds of horizontal force in the hallways. Med cart is used up to 200 feet in distance from pharmacy area for distribution. If required to transfer a patient for better positioning, 35 pounds is required to be lifted for transferring. Frequently walks distance of 500 feet to clinic location to transport small quantities of medications and check refrigerator/freezer temperatures.
Exposure to chemicals and other hazards related to patient care. Appropriate safety precautions, such as safety glasses, gloves, etc. must be used to minimize risk of injury.
Direct exposure to body substances during patient care activities and on contaminated surfaces such as patient equipment.

Essential job functions (include the following):
• Accurately prepare medications for final dispensing to the patient, including filling, order entry, and packaging
• Review completed orders and cycle-fill medications to ensure prescriptions were filled correctly
• Verify the legality and pharmaceutical feasibility of dispensing a drug based on patients' allergies, Incompatibilities with current medications, frequency of refills, etc.
• Interpret prescription orders, to include exercising professional judgment in determining whether to dispense a particular prescription, taking into account patient safety and legal limitations.
• Adhere to all Federal and State Board of Pharmacy regulations
• Adhere to all applicable guidelines for compounding
• Transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies as needed
• Answer questions from patients, doctors, nurses, etc.
• Evaluate inventory levels and place orders when below par
• On exception items, look up most cost-effective product to order
• Notify customer/facility if product is out of stock and when the order can be filled
• Restock station supplies as needed - vials, cassettes, labels, delivery tickets, etc.
• Oversee the work of all technicians and give feedback to their supervisor regarding their performance
• Log all error medication occurrences
• Other essential functions and duties may be assigned as needed
Education and/or Certifications:
• Bachelor's Degree (Pharmacy) or PharmD. required
• State Pharmacist License required without restrictions
Skills and Qualifications:
• 1+ years of related experience
• Advanced computer skills; pharmacy operations system experience preferred/required
• Ability to work independently and deliver to deadlines
• Ability to solve problems with minimal direction
• Great attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment working on multiple tasks simultaneously, while adhering to strict deadlines

Verify that every pharmacy technician working at your pharmacy holds a current registration, or that there is documentation on site showing enrollment in a Board approved training program for not more than 9 months.
Be responsible for ensuring that the practice of pharmacy is in overall compliance with laws and regulations.
Assists in supervision of all pharmacy activities and maintains records as specified by the Drug Control Act.
Provide safeguards against diversion of all controlled substances and drugs.
Ensure the annual inventory of all drugs in Schedules II, III, IV, and V, to include any expired drugs in Schedules II-V, is performed.

Ensure that pharmaceuticals are accurately dispensed in accordance with pharmacy protocols and physician orders.
Ensure ongoing compliance with all laws and regulations; ensure that the pharmacy meets or exceeds accreditation standards; and implement ‘'best practices' in all pharmacy activities.
Resolve pharmacy patient concerns and complaints and provide pharmacy patient counseling as needed.
Conduct patient profile monitoring as necessary.
Communicate with medical professionals with regard to patient status and response to medication, and when necessary to resolve patient issues.
Interact with pharmaceutical manufacturers' reps as needed to maintain current knowledge of pharmaceutical products and to manage changes to formulary.
Monitor inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies.
Maintain a system of lot and batch numbers that will allow for recall of medication products.
Manage pharmaceutical recalls.
Assume on-call responsibilities in accordance with pharmacy guidelines.
Report product incidents as required in accordance with pharmacy policy.
Supervise the activities of pharmacy technicians and other department personnel.
Report any misconduct, suspicious or unethical activities to the Compliance Officer.
Represent the pharmacy in a professional and courteous manner in all job-related interactions.
Participate in surveys conducted by authorized inspection agencies.
Participate in the pharmacy's Performance Improvement program as requested by the Performance Improvement Coordinator.
Participate in pharmacy committees when requested.
Participate in in-service education programs provided by the pharmacy.
Participate in membership activities of professional and industry organizations.
Pursue continuing education programs appropriate to job responsibilities and license requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy or Bachelor's degree - Pharmacy
Active pharmacist licensure in good standing with the Tennesse State Board of Pharmacy
Familiarity with Microsoft Office software products

2+ years of specialty, infusion, mail order.
