Description of Work
The Julian F. Keith Alcohol & Drug Abuse Treatment Center (JFK-ADATC) in Black Mountain is currently accepting applications for a full-time Maintenance Mechanic IV.
Position is responsible to the Maintenance Director for the efficient, effective and timely preventive maintenance of and repairs to buildings, equipment and grounds and the continuous maintenance of a safe environment.
Position receives guidance and instructions orally and in writing in various forms such as federal and state regulations and laws, architectural drawings, policies, procedures, memoranda and informal notes.
Position uses initiative and good judgment in performing duties. Keeps the Maintenance Director informed of planned activities, priorities, and the status of projects underway or completed. Informs the Maintenance Director of any problems, which may arise, and recommends solutions.
Position anticipates and prepares for seasonal problems and duties to assure timely, efficient and cost effect reaction, when required.

This facility houses approximately 1,776 female offenders for close, medium, and minimum custody. The work title for this position is (Maintenance/Construction Technician III). The individual assigned to this position will directly report to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor. The primary purpose of this position will provide supervision of work and knowledge in multiple areas of maintenance such as repair and/or construction of buildings, various equipment types, plumbing, heating/cooling and electrical systems. This position responsibilities include the following.
* Performing at the journey level in a mechanical trade with experience in at least one or more other trade areas to perform work assignments.
* Performing ongoing preventive maintenance and continuous repair of water/piping systems throughout the facility which includes pneumatic mixing valves, domestic water systems, non-potable water systems, heating/cooling piping, and boiler.
* Replacing and repairing commodes, sinks, water coolers, water heaters, garbage disposal, dishwasher, shower valves, water faucets, flush valves, and other related fixtures and equipment.
* Supervising the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labor (including offenders) to assist in completing assigned tasks and provide support to other staff members performing trade skills during preventive maintenance or other duties assigned by the supervisor as deemed necessary

Description of Work
This position will involve the construction, relocation, maintenance and repair of secondary underground electric distribution lines and systems. Position assists in the installation and maintenance of up to 350KW stand-by generators, switch gear, transformers, and other components of an electrical system and construct extension or replacement lines to the existing system as they relate to VIPER sites statewide. Work is performed under the general supervision of a VIPER Network Engineer (Facilities Team Supervisor) and is reviewed by NC DOI inspections. Position provides preventative and corrective maintenance on stand-by and emergency generators within the defined VIPER maintenance schedule. A major part of this job is the repair and maintenance of backup emergency power generators/systems and the employee is expected to develop extensive knowledge in this area. This job requires flexibility to work long hours. Work is normally accomplished alone but may require employee to work with others to complete tasks as needed. Job requires that employee work with vendors to obtain supplies and repair parts as needed.

Work includes performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to highly complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; and the calibration, adjustment and operation of engine analyzers. Positions must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and ancillary components/equipment. Employees in this classification perform a variety of recurring and non-recurring work such as electrical, suspension, brake system repair, and /or fitting and repairing more complex ancillary and specialized equipment. The extent of repair work to be done may require consultation with a higher-level technician or a supervisor. Ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose problems using diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair.
