New York Genome Center CEO and leadership

Charles Gagnon serves as Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the New York Genome Center (NYGC), leading all technology activities and overseeing four departments: Enterprise Computing, Research Computing, Software Engineering, and Data Innovation. He was appointed CIO in June of 2021. In this role, he is responsible for the security and connectivity needs of the Center, the Center’s public cloud environment, and the data centers hosting the compute and storage needs of the Center’s research and sequencing efforts. He oversees all IT services and software development initiatives.

Mr. Gagnon joined NYGC in 2017 as Senior Director of IT Infrastructure. He is an experienced technology and business leader, with over 20 years of experience maintaining heterogeneous infrastructures meeting the demands of modern computing. He specializes in finding the best technology solutions to solve complicated problems while respecting an intricate set of constraints. His work has often focused on computing platforms, network and data centers, cybersecurity, and disaster recovery.

Prior to the NYGC, Mr. Gagnon worked in similar roles, supporting the technology needs of quantitative and multi-strategy hedge funds. He obtained his Electrical Engineering degree from Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada, and is currently pursuing an MBA in Technology Management at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Maria serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the New York Genome Center (NYGC) and is responsible for the organization’s overall financial leadership, strategic financial planning and financial operations management.

Ms. Joanta is an accomplished leader in the nonprofit industry, with experience in nonprofit finance, research administration, strategic planning, budgeting, compliance, reporting, analytics, and process automation. Before joining the NYGC in July 2021, Ms. Joanta spent eight years at Columbia University, where she held positions as Director of Finance and Administration in the Department of Computer Science and Finance and Budget Manager of the Department of Psychiatry. In these roles, Ms. Joanta was responsible for managing the financial and operational functions of these academic/medical departments, with a focus on implementing strategic business plans and managing research portfolios.

Prior to Columbia University, Ms. Joanta worked for five years at Citigroup, becoming an Assistant Vice President under its Global Expense Management organization. Additionally, she consulted for Microsoft Advertising for its analytical Search Engine Optimization team.

Ms. Joanta obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Baruch College of The City University of New York and an MBA with a double major in Finance/Investments and Information Systems from the Zicklin School of Business of Baruch College.

She is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, a distinguished provider of professional development, knowledge, and leadership in the global research administration and research management community.

Carol is the Chief Business Officer at New York Genome Center, a non-profit academic research institution focused on genomic research to drive biomedical discoveries. She is also an Independent Director on the Boards of Aptose Biosciences, a clinical-stage company developing targeted oncology therapies, and Elicio Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a pipeline of novel immunotherapies for cancer and other diseases. Carol has broad experience in biotech, pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare business development, corporate development and venture capital including a wide and diverse range of transactional expertise in structuring, negotiating and closing transactions involving academic institutions, early stage start-ups, and small, medium and large pharmaceutical companies.
