North Park University company history timeline

1891

Founded in 1891 by the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant of America (currently the Evangelical Covenant Church), North Park describes itself as a “Christian Liberal Arts University” and retains close ties to the Covenant Church and the Swedish American community.

By 1891, the Covenant was in agreement that they should formally establish a school of their own.

1894

Old Main, the first building on campus, was completed in 1894.

Classes in Chicago opened in 1894, all within five departments: Seminary, music, business, academy, and primary.

By the turn of the century, North Park could boast of a theological seminary, a prominent and large commercial department, a growing music department, and an academy created in 1894 to better prepare students for the seminary.

1941

"There hasn't been a good history of North Park since 1941," says Peterson, who worked with Anne Jenner, the director of the University's F. M. Johnson Archives and Special Collections to create one.

1960

North Park graduated its first four-year college class in May 1960.

1997

In 1997, the controversial decision was made to again change the name of the school, and North Park University was born.

2009

Another recent book, Chicago: Yesterday and Today (Publications International, Ltd., 2009), celebrates North Park University's place in city.

2018

Mary Surridge was nominated as the school's tenth president, and began her term in August 2018.

2021

30, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrating its 130-year anniversary, North Park University (North Park) welcomes its largest incoming first-year class for Fall 2021.
