**Req Number** 174350 CERTIFIED SURGICAL TECHNICIAN - FLEXSTAFF 1. Implements and communicates the age specific plan of care and gives thorough reports at change of shift and relief time. Communicates with team members regarding the need for special equipment and supplies, and implementation of care per established policy.
2. Participates in turnover activities and room set up for each surgical procedure, including connection of suction, electrical cords, power cables and electrocautery; break down of operating room following each surgical procedure; assists with ensuring adequate supply of stock for patient care.
3. Monitors each case to ensure all infection control measures are met and all sterilization standards are adhered to. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and monitors the aseptic technique of the surgical team; documents accordingly and takes corrective action, as necessary.
4. Adheres to and monitors principles of aseptic techniques in the clinical environment including use of sterile instruments and supplies. Follows procedure for decontaminating of all instruments used during the procedure and assists with instrument processing and sterilization.
5. Maintains environmental controls and takes appropriate precautions regarding waste disposal.
6. Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy. Takes appropriate action when counts are incorrect.
7. Ensures appropriate and safe use of equipment and instrumentation prior, during and post-operatively. 'Second assists' as needed under the direction of the surgeon. Correctly holds retractors as prescribed by the supervising physician; anticipates the need for surgical equipment and supplies and secures same. Checks and or troubleshoots equipment for proper functioning prior to use and removes malfunctioning equipment for repair.
8. Assists surgeon with patient care procedures including proper labeling of all specimens from surgical field, tapping mallet and cutting suture (licensed personnel only) and performing surgical skin prep.
9. Performs related duties as assigned.

+ High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
+ Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Surgical Technologist, required.
+ Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required.
OR (meets one for the following)
+ Completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
+ Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
+ BLS certification, preferred

3. Checks sterility tapes, dates and integrity of wrappers.
4. Assists circulating nurse in obtaining supplies, equipment and opening of rooms, as necessary.
5. Opens sterile supplies for assigned cases. Performs surgical scrub technique and gown and glove procedure for self and surgical team. Maintains a sterile field and takes immediate action to correct any breaks in technique.
6. Arranges instruments, basins, sutures and so forth in a precise manner to allow for accurate counting at completion of procedure.
7. Assists circulating nurse with counts of all sponges, laps, peanuts, cottonoids, needles, reels, vessel loops, umbilical tape, penrose drains, devices and instruments.
8. Uses all devices and instruments appropriately. Performs standard draping technique.
9. Passes and handles instruments to surgical team in a safe and efficient manner.
10. Breaks down setup and prepares instruments for sterilization.
11. Performs related duties, as required.

The Anesthesia Technician adheres to AMC policies, standards and practice as well as departmental policy for the Anesthesia Department and assists with Anesthesia Delivery Systems; Equipment, Instrumentation, and Technology; Room turnover; Blood Salvage; and Infection Control.• Maintains inventory of machines/carts related to provision of anesthesia (including drug labels). • Differentiates the capabilities, limitations, and special applications of anesthesia machines/carts. • Anticipates the needs of Providers based on location (OR vs. Non-Operating Room Anesthesia). • Identifies power supplies, circuit breakers, and medical gas connectors for each machine. • Maintains the stock of pyxis machines and drug boxes. • Complies with Environmental Health and Safety policy regarding spilled anesthetic agents. • Completes the process for oxygen tank replacement. • Utilizes knowledge of biotechnology and monitoring to prepare medical equipment and supplies based on patient need. • Identifies missing instrument/equipment and works with team to locate and retrieve missing items. • Assembles invasive as well as non-invasive monitoring equipment. • Prepares scopes and probes specific to patient care procedures (bronchoscopes, TEE probes, etc.). • Performs troubleshooting and emergency procedures in the event of equipment failure. • Applies care and cleaning techniques specific to critical (sterile) vs. semi-critical (clean) items, utilizing • manufacturer's instructions for use (IFUs). • Collaborates with nursing staff on case/room turnover. • Performs routine room setup for each new case, ensuring availability and function of equipment/supplies • (including emergency equipment) prior to start. • Performs room cleaning within the specified time frame. • Adheres to infection control policies and sharps safety in all aspects of service delivery. • Practices according to hospital policy and within the limitations of unlicensed assistive care.
