The incumbent operates the school buses safely under all types of weather conditions, transporting students and other authorized persons to and from school on regular, special education, and other routes. The school bus operator may make extracurricular trips as authorized by the local school system. Responsible for the supervision of the attendant assigned to their route. Must perform a thorough pre-trip inspection of the vehicle including all equipment. Must perform a thorough post-trip inspection as required by law. Responsible for the cleanliness of the vehicle. Will be held liable if a child is left on the vehicle. Demonstrate a commitment to know about your students, what their needs are, assist locating and implementing important information such as: The IEP (Transportation Plans) Emergency information, including evacuation plan, special medical information and any DNR orders Seating chart Emergency equipment (fire extinguishers, first aid kit) Exercise universal precautions. Maintain a high level of professionalism. Maintain a high level of confidentiality. Communication among all team members is essential. Qualifications: Be 21 years of age or older. Possess a valid and properly classified driver's license issued by Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri or Kentucky. The valid license must contain an “S” endorsement. Current license must have been held for at least three years, in addition it has not been revoked, suspended, canceled or disqualified as defined in Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/1-217 & 1-148.3a-5. Pass an Illinois written school bus driver permit test (valid for 1 year). Pass a behind the wheel exam (valid for 180 days) in the type of vehicle you will be driving. Pass a physical examination (valid for 90 days), including drug and tuberculosis testing. Affirm under penalty of perjury that you have not made a false statement or knowingly concealed a material fact in any application for permit. Complete an initial classroom training course (valid for one year) administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. Demonstrate the ability to exercise reasonable care in the operation of a First Division vehicle in accordance with the requirements. Be physically able to safely operate a First Division vehicle. Not have been under an order of court supervision or convicted of two or more serious traffic offenses within the previous 12-month period, nor be convicted of two or more serious traffic offenses during any 12-month period prior to the date of your application. Not have been under an order of court supervision or convicted of reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs or reckless homicide while operating of a motor vehicle within three years of the date of application. Pass an Illinois specific and FBI criminal background check, whereas fingerprint results are valid for one year. Consent in writing to the release of results of reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing by the employer of the applicant to the Secretary of State. Not have, through the unlawful operation of a motor vehicle, caused an accident resulting in the death of any person. Not have been afflicted with or suffering from any mental disability or disease within the last five years. Additional Qualifications: After the pre-employment interview, a new applicant must (1) pass a physical examination, including a tuberculosis test and drug testing; (2) be fingerprinted, as prescribed by the Secretary of State, and clear an Illinois specific background check, with prints forwarded to the FBI for a national background check; (3) complete the initial classroom course conducted by the Regional Office of Education; and (5) pass all written and performance exams necessary for the proper classification of the driver's license. JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Bus driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related activities while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operate a school bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of students. Transport students, faculty, staff, and administrators to and from school-related activities, including field trips, conferences, and airport transfers, both within and outside the four-county area. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in proper working condition, including checks on lights, brakes (including air-over-hydraulic systems), fluid levels, and tire pressure. Report any incidents such as accidents, traffic violations, or student misconduct to the appropriate personnel promptly. Ensure student safety during boarding, transit, and exiting procedures. Maintain accurate records of mileage, student counts, and any incidents or maintenance issues. Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and school transportation policies. Communicate professionally with students, parents, and school staff. Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or the equivalent. General knowledge on the High School level including or supplemented by work related experience; Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class C along with a Passenger (P) Endorsement; Clean driving record and background check Possess the skill to successfully pass a driving program in addition to having a valid CDL when required; Prior experience as a school bus driver preferred Basic concept of minor mechanical repairs with knowledge of all college policies and procedures concerning the transportation of documents and people; Knowledge of Martin County Indiantown area; Capability of taking care of an emergency while in transit. (This would include but not be limited to setting up at the proper distance utilizing flares, lights or flags as required for that particular time of day in accordance with State of Florida Transportation Department regulations.); Complete mandatory annual compliance training. Work hours vary as needed according to trips; may need early morning, late evening, or possibly for overnight trips. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position requires an ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, squatting, and carry items occasionally in excess of seventy-five (75) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
