Department: Internal Medicine Duties & Responsibilities: Schedule Hospitalists typically work a 7 on, 7 off model of 12-hour shifts. During the week, two physicians and two APPs round with a shift start time of 7 AM. Providers alternate in a round-and-go model with at least one provider staying until 7 PM. An admitter comes in a 10 AM and works until 10 PM. The night provider comes in at 7 PM and works until 7 AM. On the weekends, the admitter become a rounder, and there are no APPs and no admitter; the physicians admit in round robin fashion. Approximately one week in twelve is night coverage. Median census per physician team is 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is 8.5, and median number of night admissions is 6. Patient Load The patients are 100% inpatient with an open ICU. Median census per physician team is 14 patients. Median number of day admissions is 8.5, and median number of night admissions is 6. On-site consultation is available from pulmonary/critical care, cardiology, surgery, and anesthesia. Other consultation can be sought from subspecialists at VCU Medical Center in Richmond but may require the patient be transferred. Procedures Hospitalists rarely perform procedures, but comfort with central lines is preferred. Providers from surgery and anesthesia perform most procedures. Codes are run by hospitalists and emergency medicine providers. Teaching As part of the new family medicine residency in South Hill, physician will regularly supervise second- and third-year residents. Faculty are expected to provide typical supervision, train these residents on the care of adult inpatients, and complete evaluation and feedback of the residents. Scheduled Hours40This position will be in clinic running their own patient schedule 4 days a week, with one day dedicated to complete administrative tasks. After a 6 month probation period, the admin day can be from home. The clinic runs 8a-4p, will need to be ready to see patients prior to 8a and may need to stay passed 4p depending on how the clinic flow goes. APPs see about 18-22 patients a clinic day. Surgical Oncology sees a mix of patients and this position will need to be able to see any of theses patients in their clinic. Breast (new and returns), endocrine(returns), and melanoma (returns). There are times where our APP will see post op patients, but this is not regularly scheduled with the APP. The clinic volume is typically 18-22 patients with a 1 hour lunch break to break the day up. Our clinic locations are at the Siteman Cancer Center at BJH in Central West End, and we will be starting to see patients in 2026 at MoBap. Our APPs have dedicated team members who can help with scheduling follow ups and assist with patients in clinic. In 2026, we will have 4 full time breast surgeons, 2 full time endocrine/melanoma surgeons, and 1 part time endocrine surgeon. Emphasis on patients with multiple or more complex diagnoses. * Prescribe medications or other treatments and arrange follow-up for patients based on diagnoses. * Perform telephone consultations with patient, family, and/or specialists, coordinating care as indicated. * Educate patients about their diagnoses, treatment, options, prognosis, and appropriate preventive care. * Accurately and fully document histories, physical exams, diagnoses, telephone consultations and treatments according to SHS medical record protocols. * Personally review and initial all reports of labs, x-rays/other studies, consultant reports and transferred medical records. * Regularly update each patient's medical record as indicated. 20% - EKG AND CHRONIC CARE LEADERSHIP * Review and provide final interpretation for all EKG's ordered by SHS clinicians * Provide consults for complex patients referred by SHS clinicians * Serve as a resource for Student Health clinicians to discuss complex patients. * Assist Medical Director in providing oversight of specific SHS programs when called upon. 10% - OTHER DUTIES * Participate as needed in educational programs with regard to medical issues of concern within the University environment. * Participate in continuing medical educational activities such as conferences, professional meetings, and self-study in order to keep abreast of professional developments.
