The successful candidate will: The Research Associates will compile and translate air quality data for the study region from published sources into the formats required for incorporation into the overall analysis. Research associates will also assist the project team in compiling a record of pollutant emitting sources from the oil and gas industry as well as other major industrial activity and road traffic. Will assist in the development of research communication materials including plots, graphs, web pages, posters, papers, and other documents. This project is focused on ascertaining the contributions of unconventional oil and gas development to local and regional air quality, associated population exposures across the multi-state Marcellus-Utica Shale region from 2004 to 2023, which groups of people have been most affected by these air quality changes, and how changes in industry practices and government policy have affected pollutant exposures in the region. The ideal candidate will have previous basic science laboratory experience including rodent handling and colony management, rodent survival surgeries, auditory function testing, neurophysiology, microscopy, complex statistical analysis and coding in MATLAB/Python. The lab's research focuses on understanding neural circuits in the descending auditory system, specifically how auditory brainstem neurons encode acoustic information and identifying/characterizing neuromodulatory (e.g. serotonergic) pathways that influence sound processing in the brain and cochlea. Using normal hearing and noise-induced hearing loss models, our long-term goals are to (1) improve basic knowledge of brain processes that modulate sound encoding by the cochlea and (2) identify translatable therapeutic otoprotective targets to reduce susceptibility to hearing disorders resulting from acoustic overexposures (i.e. noise trauma). This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative research network spanning both The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). Located in the brand-new Texas Instruments Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (TI-BMES) building, the successful applicant will have access to cutting edge equipment/technologies through core facilities at both UTD Richardson and UTSW Dallas campuses in addition to those contained within the lab. As part of the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing, the lab works closely with other basic science laboratories and is uniquely positioned to collaborate with clinicians and audiologists to bridge basic science and clinical research. The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for leading research using rodent (mouse) models, consisting of neuroanatomical circuit mapping (survival surgeries, brain/cochlear tissue preparation, immunohistochemistry, microscopy), in-vivo sound evoked neurophysiology (auditory function testing, single unit electrophysiology), in-vitro whole cell patch-clamp electrophysiology from brain slices (pharmacology), optogenetics and animal behavior. Enthusiastic commitment to basic scientific research in auditory neuroscience and experience working with rodent models and colony management are required for this position. This position is intended to provide the experience in publishing, presenting, grant-writing, and graduate/undergraduate mentorship necessary to prepare the fellow for an Assistant Professor position. The anticipated start date for this position is January 2026. The salary for Post-Doctoral Research Associates in BBS is determined by years of experience per the current NIH (NRSA) stipend levels. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Penn State's Center for Energy Law and Policy is seeking multiple research assistants for Summer 2025 and Academic Year 2025-2026, to support a variety of interdisciplinary research projects and are open to students in any degree program and at any level (undergraduate, professional or graduate programs) or previous students needing experience, such as those staying on optional practical training . Research assistant positions will vary in length depending on the project. Selected candidates will work with an interdisciplinary faculty, staff attorney, and student team from law, economics, engineering and public policy. Each research assistant will have an assigned faculty mentor but will be expected to interact with other project students and faculty through regular conference calls and discussions. For Summer 2025 in particular, some successful candidates will be assigned to participate in research teams investigating law and policy related to sustainable aviation fuel, renewable natural gas, and/or off-grid community development. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Part-time (spring and fall semesters) research assistant positions are available in the Esker Lab in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology. These positions provide laboratory and field support for the plant disease epidemiology program, with emphasis on research in field crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat. We are a dynamic lab that uses multiple methods for working with plant diseases funded by federal grants and support from commodity groups and industry partners. Our program conducts research using facilities located in Buckhout Laboratory on the University Park campus. We also have field trials at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Rock Springs, the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Manheim, and across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as part of the Soybean On-Farm Network. Opportunities also exist for conducting independent research! Typical duties in this position include, but are not limited to: Fungal culture media preparation Microbiological culturing and isolation of soil and seed-borne fungal pathogens Enumeration of fungal colonies Selection of pure cultures of isolates for long-term preservation Microscopic evaluation and identification of fungal cultures Assist with laboratory assays, including pathogenicity tests and fungicide sensitivity studies Assist with DNA extraction and quality check of fungal isolates from different genomic projects Collect soil and plant samples from field and greenhouse experiments and provide necessary assistance with sample processing prior to analysis/evaluation Perform germination tests for corn, soybean, and wheat seed samples from field trials Assess plant diseases from research studies conducted in the field, as well as in greenhouse or growth chamber trials Data entry of field and laboratory experiments This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. POSITION SPECIFICS The Kennedy Lab at Penn State in the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics (CIDD) is seeking a Research Technologist - Life Sciences (Professional) to assist in projects on the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases. We have been developing the system of Caenorhabditis hosts (nearly microscopic, lab culturable, nematode worms) and a virus that naturally infects them (Shaw & Kennedy 2022). This system allows for the controlled study of disease ecology and pathogen evolution in replicate host populations, which is extremely rare in the field of disease ecology. Questions that the Research Technologist will help answer include but are not limited to how pathogens evolve in response to host immune systems and what changes pathogens undergo while adapting to novel host species. The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing reagents, taking inventory on consumables, maintaining worm lines, making plates, washing glassware, preparing worms and virus for experiments, and conducting and assisting with experiments. They will become competent with pipetting, aseptic technique, using a balance, quantitative PCR, dissecting microscopy, fluorescent dissecting microscopy, worm wrangling, worm counting, and basic experimental design. Previous experience with any of these methods is an advantage but is not required. An ideal candidate will have an interest in ecology and evolution, will be detail-oriented, and will be collegial, hard-working, and considerate of others. The successful candidate will maintain lab supplies and equipment, manage and oversee fish colonies, contribute to research projects, assist in maintaining lab safety protocols of staff and student, investigates and evaluates research methods, advising faculty and researchers on optimal use of methodology and equipment, collect and analyze data, summarizing the results for dissemination in manuscripts, training PhD students and Postdocs in the lab in equipment operation and research techniques, and provide constructive feedback to both trainees and the PI on ongoing experiments.
