Title: Ultrasound Technologist, Multi - Hosp Unit: Ultrasound Hours: Tuesday - Friday, 9p-6:30a Facility: MVH Independently performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures and ultrasound directed interventional procedures utilizing proper techniques and protocols. Works under their scope of practice and in accordance with registry in the operation of equipment. Coordinates patient flow and the activities of the Ultrasound Department. Exercises professional judgment in the performance of duties in order to maintain equipment in good working condition. May perform procedures in other imaging modalities based on departmental needs. May have on call responsibilities.
Essential Duties & Functions:
1. Performs US procedures of diagnostic quality as ordered by the referring physician and/or radiologist on patients of all ages according to established protocols and evaluates Ultrasound studies for technical image quality.
2. Obtains clinical history and data for correlation with the US procedure.
3. Performs daily and weekly QC as required.
4. Practices sterile technique as required.
5. Assists Radiologist in special procedures and in performing medical treatment during emergency situations.
6. Coordinates patient care with other areas in order to optimize patient time and satisfaction
7. Assesses learning needs and educates patients/families regarding procedures based on individual needs. Thoroughly educates patients about exam.
8. Ensures that all records, files and reports are properly recorded as required, performs clerical duties when necessary, verifies a signed physician order is received and corresponds with the billed procedure.
9. Maintains knowledge of the locations and operation of all emergency equipment in the unit.
10. Follows radiation safety policies and procedures.
Education:
Minimum Level of Education Required: Associate degree

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
* Credentialed in Ultrasound technology by one of the following (required):
o American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
o Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
* Vascular Credentialed by one of the following (required):
o ARDMS- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
o CCI (RVS), Cardiovascular Credentialing International, Registered Vascular Specialist
* Minimum of one additional registry in practiced specialties are required as approved by ARDMS: Abdomen, OB/GYN, muscular skeletal, Neurosonology, Breast
* CPR Certification required within 30 days of hire
Experience:
Minimum Level of Experience Required: No prior job-related work experience
Preferred experience: 2 years of experience in Ultrasound

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
Performs ultrasound procedures in a manner that ensures an accurate and complete examination within the guidelines, policies, procedures and standards of Medical Imaging to assigned patients of all ages
Exhibits competency in performing ultrasound procedures
Images required views demonstrating appropriate anatomy and pathology
Knowledgeable of catheters, biopsy instruments and sterile trays and prepares these items as necessary
Obtains accurate histories and explains rationale for procedure to patients/families
Enhances image quality through the use of appropriate transducers and machine settings
Evaluates the finished images to ensure diagnostic exams are being submitted to the radiologists
Maintains quality care throughout the procedure
Assess the abdominal arterial & venous system using color imaging
Clinical Excellence
Maintains working knowledge of equipment in order to function in all areas of ultrasound.
All ultrasound equipment within the Medical Imaging Ultrasound department
Technically knowledgeable of equipment operation including hardware and software
Performs reasonable trouble shooting
Reports equipment problems through appropriate channels & documents on board for all staff notification
Maintains clean work area, checks and stocks all supplies in their specific area and verifies pertinent accessories assigned to that room

Able to document area of concern
Set up trays with sterile field for radiologist
Assists radiologist with biopsy
Orders labs and pathology tests under the direction of a radiologist
Relationship Building
Performs support functions of the Medical Imaging department to ensure patient expectations and needs are met and assumes personal responsibility for training fellow technologists/students.
Promptly processes images and paperwork to ensure timely turn around in providing a report to the physician's office
Fills out all appropriate paperwork to facilitate timely and accurate reporting
Maintains and coordinates patient flow to ensure efficient and expedient patient care
Promptly and accurately enters patient information into HIS system to ensure efficient patient throughput
Maintenance of the QA, QC, QI programs
Shares knowledge and guides fellow technologists/students with proper department protocol and procedures
Displays a professional attitude in the area toward fellow technologists/students, fostering mutual respect and creating productive learning environment

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Performs routine and complex sonography imaging by acquiring and processing patient exams in accordance with accreting bodies and/or manufacturer guidelines and as outlined in department protocols. Selects proper sonography protocols and techniques to obtain optimal data. Reviews cases with the Maternal Fetal Medicine provider when appropriate. Reviews labs and patient history to perform correct exam.
Responsible to review ultrasound orders for completeness and accuracy. Reviews patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. Takes steps to acquire additional information if needed from the patient, ordering provider and/or MFM provider.
Demonstrates acceptable imaging quality standards by critiquing positioning, technical factors and alignment. Reviews patient data for accuracy, quality and completeness.
Transfers and verifies image data in PACS and other digital and reporting systems providing necessary medical history and information for MFM provider interpretation. Utilizes the web servers and email systems to send exams for preliminary readings after hours.
Responsible for maintaining imaging equipment and workplace environment including maintaining supply inventories and orderliness of work area. Recognizes malfunctions and service needs and reports service needs in a timely manner.
Ensures patient, visitor and environmental safety. Reports safety events immediately including those that are a near miss.
Assists in instruction of students and new staff as necessary. May perform duties of Sono Lead or Imaging Coordinator in his/her absence.
Meets productivity levels as established by department benchmarking. Assists other areas during downtimes so to maintain productivity.
May be required to perform duties of other modalities within the department to which licensers are held by the technologist/sonographer.
Complies with other job descriptions of cross-trained modalities also performed within the department.

Participate in educational activities within the scope of ultrasound. This may include presentations for CME credit.
Create AS OB reports following each ultrasound performed.
Follow protocol to provide additional imaging as needed, based on findings during an OB ultrasound exam.

Primary Duties:
Performs Ultrasound examinations in department or at bedside to include chest, abdomen, pelvis, small parts, carotids, neonatal heads, OB/GYN, trans-vaginal, and the prostate in accordance with prescribed protocols utilizing identified scanner and in accordance with policies on Universal Precautions, safety, and waste disposal. Adheres to the policies and procedures that apply to the performance of obtaining ultrasound studies, including performing correct, exam, including laterality, on correct patient at the time requested.
Reports initial impressions to the Radiologist and review the images before releasing the patient. Ensures timely completion of all exams through tracking, scanning and other technical workflow as related to Radiology Information System (RIS), Enterprise Radiology Solutions (ERS) and Enterprise Electronic Record (EMR).
Provides basic information to patients and/or families concerning procedures to be performed and can answer questions if asked. Coordinates patient flow on assigned unit to maximize productivity. Ensures that patient waiting times are minimized before, during and after the procedure. Coordinates, communicates, and collaborates with Patient Financial Associates that register radiology exams to minimize delays and potential safety issues for the outpatient population.
Prepares exam rooms at the beginning of each shift and between assigned cases. Coordinates and collaborates with Technical Aides to ensure efficient room turnover. Assists with the upkeep of ultrasound equipment, adheres to all related safety requirements, and reports any need for equipment repairs. Cleans equipment and work area, wipes down assigned equipment between cases, and stocks and maintains supplies at identified inventory levels.
Assists the technical supervisor in the revision, development and implementation of lab policies, in-service programs and continuing educational programs that enhance the individual technologist's performance and skills.
Qualifications:
Must have completed training in an approved Ultrasound program.
