The Pharmacy Intern assists pharmacists in safely and correctly interpreting and processing physicians' orders via entering, selecting, assembling, dispensing, and ensuring delivery of medications to the ultimate user for both inpatient and outpatient services. Assures the accurate and timely distribution of medications, IV solutions, floor stock supplies and controlled substances to patient care areas. Helps ensure accurate charge and credit functions for inpatients and outpatients and interacts with medical center personnel, physicians, patients, and others via verbal and personal contact daily.
Essential Job Functions
Inpatient/Infusion Pharmacy:
*Assists in accurate medication order interpretation. This involves selecting or compounding, dispensing, ensuring delivery of and stocking the correct products to fulfill physician orders. Fill medication drawers and automated dispensing cabinets, floor stock, and controlled substances as applicable.
*Compounds IV admixtures aseptically and accurately
*Operates and loads automation devices (robotics or automated cabinets) for drug dispensing
*Assists other hospital staff with medication and pharmacy related issues via answering phone calls and responding to computerized medication messages
*Distributes patient medications promptly and efficiently, as well as delivers and restocks medications
*Completes monthly unit inspections for an assigned hospital area as assigned- this involves ensuring this area has no outdated medications, is appropriately stocked, and checking crash carts
*Clarifies prescriptions with physicians or appropriate staff members and participation in medication reconciliation with patients as assigned
*Counsels and provides medication education to transition of care patients prior to discharge as assigned
*Trains, educates, and precepts new pharmacy technicians, students, and interns
*Participates on various departmental and interdepartmental committees
Outpatient/Non-Acute Pharmacy:
*Assists in accurate medication order interpretation. This involves entering, selecting, filling, compounding, dispensing, and ensuring release of the final product to the correct person to fulfill prescriber orders
*Assists patients and counseling of medication and pharmacy related issues via answering phone calls and in person consultations under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist
*Restocks frequently used medications and over the counter products in pharmacy areas in addition to operating applicable automation dispensing system devices within the pharmacy
*Receives, transfers, and clarifies oral prescriptions with prescribers or appropriate staff members as authorized by state law and under pharmacist supervision
*Administers immunizations [if immunization certified via an accredited immunization program as allowed per state law]
*Trains, educates, and precepts new pharmacy technicians, students, and interns
*Assists other staff with medication issues and response to email and phone call concerns or follow-up

Job Summary:
The Pharmacist performs medication management activities to ensure safe, rational, and cost-effective therapy while maintaining compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, and standards as promulgated by Federal, State, and accrediting agencies or regulating bodies. The Pharmacist maintains established departmental policies and procedures and complies with department objectives.
Essential Functions:
Process orders and provide medication review for appropriateness, safety and efficacy during order processing and perform any necessary clinical support duties as needed
Ensure accurate preparation of compounded and non-compounded products to include safe handling that is consistent with regulations
Oversee distributive functions of the pharmacy department to facilitate accurate and timely medication availability to patients/staff
Oversee pharmacy technicians and support personnel activities based on department need
Maintain responsibility and accountability for the security of pharmacy inventory based on department need
Identify, document, and resolve potential and actual adverse medication events and may evaluate reports in event reporting system for trending and prevention purposes
Perform medication education to improve patient understanding and adherence consistent with department guidance
Work collaboratively and effectively to communicate verbally and in writing with pharmacy team members, healthcare providers, patients, caregivers, and leaders
Participate in departmental medication safety, quality assurance, drug utilization reviews, drug dosing, infection prevention, student precepting and other activities based on department need

Job Summary:
The Pharmacist performs medication management activities to ensure safe, rational, and cost-effective therapy while maintaining compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, and standards as promulgated by Federal, State, and accrediting agencies or regulating bodies. Essential Functions:
Process orders and provide medication review for appropriateness, safety and efficacy during order processing and perform any necessary clinical support duties as needed
Ensure accurate preparation of compounded and non-compounded products to include safe handling that is consistent with regulations
Oversee distributive functions of the pharmacy department to facilitate accurate and timely medication availability to patients/staff
Oversee pharmacy technicians and support personnel activities based on department need
Maintain responsibility and accountability for the security of pharmacy inventory based on department need
Identify, document, and resolve potential and actual adverse medication events and may evaluate reports in event reporting system for trending and prevention purposes
Perform medication education to improve patient understanding and adherence consistent with department guidance
Work collaboratively and effectively to communicate verbally and in writing with pharmacy team members, healthcare providers, patients, caregivers, and leaders

Major Responsibilities:
Develops competency in servicing pharmacy customers including obtaining and recording initial demographic and other required information, data entry of required information into the pharmacy system for record keeping, insurance verification and label generation purposes, and cashiering.
Develops competence in dispensing and delivery of medications. This includes developing competence in the department's us of information systems, technology, and automation use for dispensing, storage of medications and clerical duties.
Develop competence in insurance and third party billing functions including: data entry of customer demographics and third-party information, obtaining prior authorizations from appropriate third-party carriers, maintaining files of prior authorization, investigating and correcting errors in submission to third parties and handling private insurance, workers compensation, and third-party insurance coverage and prescription-related issues.
Develops competence in clinical support needs such as but not limited to DIR fees.

Develops competence in pharmacy procedures and documentation as required, satisfying legal, regulatory, and department requirements of pharmacy practice.
Complies with legal, regulatory, accreditation standards. This includes (but is not limited to) controlled substance procedures and USP requirements.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Functions include, accepting new written, faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent; accepting new verbal prescription orders for non-controlled drugs from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent as authorized by state law and responsible pharmacist authorization.
* Entering information into and retrieving information from an electronic health record or prescription processing computer system. Ensuring the accurate charge and credit functions related to medication orders are processed for patient billing.
* Preparing and affixing labels; stocking prescription drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory locations; counting and pouring drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist; performing non-sterile drug compounding as defined under guidelines published by United States Pharmacopeia
* Stocking automated drug dispensing cabinets, floor stock, and crash carts; Transport of medications by vehicle to off-site locations. Operating technology used for drug dispensing (robotics)
* As permitted by state law/regulations: Accepting verbal refill authorizations for dangerous drugs that are not controlled substances from a prescriber or the prescriber's agent, so long as there is no change from the original prescription and clarifying prescriptions when no professional judgment is needed; Sending or receiving copies of non-controlled prescriptions (i.e.. Prescription transfers). Technician checking of associate technician work prior to dispensing.
* Assisting in the education and precepting of new pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students and participation in performance improvement activities.
* Outpatient: Packaging and selling a prescription drug to a patient or patient representative and assisting with insurance claim processing. Performing diagnostic laboratory testing as defined in state laws/guidelines.
* Inpatient/Home infusion: Performing sterile drug compounding as defined under guidelines published by United States Pharmacopeia and infection-control procedures
* Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Other functions as outlined, and in accordance with, respective State Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations.

Licensing/Certification
ExCPT Certification provided by the National Health Career Association or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification and registration with State Board of Pharmacy (required)
Education

Completion of ASHP/ACPE tech training program - or - pharmacy technician training via Armed Forces/Veterans Affairs - or respective state department approved career tech high school program (preferred)
Work Experience
Previous experience working in Retail, Ambulatory, Outpatient, Hospital, Acute Care, or Home Infusion pharmacy (preferred)
