The SocialWorker role will be a tri-campus hub for triage, assessment, and evaluations to assist adult patients finding the right mental health care at the right time. This role will support our strategic initiative to improve access to our outpatient programs, provide transparency to available services and treatment within our system, make rapid and appropriate recommendations for services to a larger outside ecosystem while supporting Ambulatory Services' mission to provide tertiary care to the most acute patients.
This is a unique opportunity for a clinically curious and diagnostically driven socialworker who thrives in a fast-paced, evaluation-focused environment. Unlike traditional roles, this position emphasizes breadth over caseload management-allowing you to engage with a high volume of new patients, sharpen your diagnostic skills, and contribute to clinical decision-making without the ongoing demands of long-term case management. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides extensive on call services to obtain authorization for organ and tissue donation. On-call responsibilities may be affected by increased donor activity, staffing shortages, etc. Facilitates the authorization process for potential organ and tissue donor families prior to, during and after death declaration.
Evaluates potential donors. Assesses potential donor families, obtains appropriate authorization for donation, conducts Medical/Social History interview, and assists donor families through identification of potential end of life decisions, attending family meetings and providing donation information as needed. Responsible for medical management of donors prior to recovery activities. Directs the placement of anatomical gifts as necessary. Provides transplant surgeons with information necessary to determine appropriate recipients. Coordinates and assists in the surgical recovery of organs and perioperative management of the donor when necessary.
Provides support to Hospital Development Coordinator, in the assigned facility, to identify formal and informal leaders, assesses their respective roles, degree of influence and needs. Works collaboratively with these leaders and utilizes their expertise to improve and promote donation. Assists in policy and procedure development. Functions as an expert clinical resource for the hospital regarding organ and tissue donation.
Will visually assess donors, interpret charts, document information and communicate findings. Collaborates with hospital and medical staff to provide potential donor families with accurate and timely information regarding the patient's current clinical course. Maintains communication with hospital staff and attending physician regarding the potential donor family's understanding of the prognosis and acts as a family advocate to the health care team as necessary. In the event of neurological deterioration and/or cardiac cessation, provides education to the potential donor family to include signs and symptoms of brain death, the process of diagnosing brain death, or cardiac cessation and withdrawal of support. As appropriate, discusses organ Family Care Coordinator and tissue donation opportunities with the potential donor family with the goal being to obtain authorization for donation.
In the event the potential donor stabilizes and is no longer considered a potential organ donor, establishes an appropriate support system in collaboration with the health care staff, brings closure to the relationship with the family and returns if needed or requested.
Provides appropriate information for the bereavement program to all potential organ and tissue donor families who wish to participate. As appropriate, provides a follow-up letter to donor families. Facilitates donor family and recipient communication in accordance with company policy and procedure.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL TRAITS: Walks, stands and sits. Must drive to on call assignments. Communicates verbally and in writing with donor families, hospital personnel and physicians.
QUALIFICATIONS:

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is currently hiring for a Casual SocialWorker, MSW to work with the Hillman Cancer Center location in Shadyside/Pittsburgh, PA. This position will work a Casual as needed daylight schedule Monday through Friday in a Medical Oncology setting.
The SocialWorker is responsible for providing complete psychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, individual, family, group, bereavement and end of life counseling, and timely and appropriate discharge planning based on known or anticipated needs.
Responsibilities:
+ Demonstrates expertise in accessing social systems by providing resource-specific information to patients and families, initiating contact with appropriate resources and facilitating the patient / family's ability to accept referrals.
+ Maintain extensive knowledge of federal, state and local assistance programs and community resources that affect patient needs.
+ Acts as a mentor to social work students and/or serves as a field instructor to MSW students.
+ Successfully utilize therapeutic counseling methods such as crisis intervention, psychosocial support, brief goal-directed therapy, CISM and/or other appropriate therapeutic methods that may be appropriate to the clinical situation.
+ Provides accurate, timely and appropriate documentation of all social work interventions in the medical record per regulatory policies and procedures.
+ Demonstrate a knowledge of reimbursement systems, the ability to educate patients and families regarding payer requirements / coverage for post-acute care services and the ability to effectively advocate on behalf of the patient to obtain authorizations for continued care as appropriate.
+ Demonstrate the ability to identify, assess, counsel and effectively intervene with medically and psychosocially complex patients with the ability to understand complex dynamics related to the clinical situation.
+ Continue to monitor and evaluate the plan of care, options and available services throughout the hospital stay to effectively meet the patient and family's need. Reassess the plan of care as status changes or at a minimum of every 3 days.
+ Demonstrate appropriate professional practice, maintaining respect for confidentiality and freedom of choice as outlined by the Code of Ethics by the National Association of SocialWorkers as well as the State Board of SocialWorkers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.
+ Collaborate effectively with the healthcare team, patients and families and relevant community resources to develop and implement and individualized plan of care.
+ Educate and advocate for patients and families to enhance their ability to make informed decisions regarding medical care, discharge planning, advance directives and end of life care including actively participating in the guardianship process when appropriate.
+ Complete a psychosocial assessment that includes social, economic, cultural, age-related and behavioral factors, history of child, elder or domestic abuse, prior psychiatric or substance abuse treatment, family and social support systems and all other available resources as appropriate to the clinical situation.
+ MSW degree from a CSWE accredited School of Social Work required.
+ Oncology experience preferred Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:Current / active Social Work License required or successful pass of the social work licensing exam within 9 months of employment.

About the Radically-Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program:
Candidates to join must have some RO-DBT training or are in the process of being trained through the Blended Learning training program. Candidates who are actively pursuing the training program (but not yet began) are also eligible for consideration, under the prerequisite that they must have a pending start date for the training program. However, receiving an RO-DBT intensive training certificate is not a requirement to be considered. Providers within this program provide RO-DBT adherent individual session, with opportunities to co-facilitate our adult and/or adolescent RO skill classes.

SPECIALIST-IN-TRAINING MODEL:
Our Specialist-in-Training model is a transitional plan of training, typically six months, that is meant for Licensed Providers who need additional training within their program's area of specialization prior to being considered a specialist in that area of practice. Generally, the Specialist-in-Training time consists of: a reduced minimum caseload with weekly supervision; assigned reading; didactic sessions to discuss the readings and receive additional education; increased conceptualization in treatment plans reviewed by your supervisor; attendance of open supervision and discussion of other SLBMI programs that may be part of your training time. Other types of activities may be possible which would enhance your skills as a clinician in general, as well as within your specialty area.
For both models, revenue generated by your cases that exceed your base salary guarantee will still be assigned to you, allowing you opportunity to earn greater than your minimum base salary.

Qualifications
Interested applicants must have completed a Master's or doctoral degree in a clinical mental health field (e.g. MSW, Professional Counselor, Ph.D) AND be fully licensed by the State of Missouri to practice independently.
All applicants must be credentialed-eligible for managed care panels in Missouri. There is a required 90-day wait period for insurance credentialing to be completed prior to starting.
