Saint Peter's University company history timeline

1872

Saint Peter’s College, the Jesuit College of New Jersey, was founded as a liberal arts college for men in 1872.

1878

When classes first started in Jersey City on September 2, 1878, seventy-one students originally enrolled in the Preparatory Department.

1899

As more students arrived, work began on a new school building on Grand Street in 1899 (pictured right).

1930

Saint Peter’s reopened in 1930 on the fourth floor of the Chamber of Commerce Building in downtown Jersey City, and women were admitted to the Evening Session for the first time.

1933

By 1933, the College had made serious efforts to move from downtown Jersey City to its present site on the former Edward Young estate.

1936

In 1936, the College moved to its present location on Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.

The college granted an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to Martin Luther King Jr., in 1965. It was first integrated in 1936, when the college admitted its first black student.

1975

A campus at Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, primarily an adult education branch, opened in 1975.

In 1975 Saint Peter’s established a branch campus, a “college for adults,” in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and began working to improve the Jersey City campus, with renovations that included the conversion of the grass quad into the concrete quad on campus today.

1979

The college’s first graduate program was offered in 1979.

1980

The College offered its first graduate program in education in 1980.

Also in 1980, Saint Peter’s welcomed resident students onto campus for the first time.

1983

Beginning with the 1983 acquisition of its first residence hall, the college has converted four apartment buildings to dormitory use, and constructed two new dormitories.

2000

In 2000, Gannon Hall, the science building, completed an $8.2 million renovation.

2002

Saint Peter’s College celebrated its 130th Anniversary in 2002.

2004

In 2004, the long-awaited pedestrian bridge over Kennedy Boulevard linked the East Campus and the West Campus.

2006

On December 24, 2006, sitting college President James N. Loughran, S.J., was found dead in his home.

In 2006, the college began a $50 million capital campaign.

2008

In 2008, Saint Peter's was awarded a $2 million grant from the United States Department of Defense to create the Center for Microplasma Science and Technology.

2011

In March 2011, it was announced that the college would take over Saint Aeden's Church at McGinley Square from the Archdiocese of Newark.

2012

In March 2012, it was announced the college had been granted the university designation by the New Jersey State Secretary for Higher Education and would thus change its name.

On August 14, 2012, Saint Peter's announced the official change on its website, becoming Saint Peter's University.

2013

Further expansion of the east side of the campus included the new Mac Mahon Student Center, completed in 2013.

2014

In 2014 the University opened a center for undocumented students, providing them a safe space and mentoring, a resource library, legal support, and advice for them and their families about deportation defense and immigration issues.

2018

Saint Peter’s University was named first among institutions across the nation as the recipient of the 2018 ACE/Fidelity Investments Award for Institutional Transformation.

2021

Saint Peter’s University ranked highest in New Jersey and 11th overall for Best Value in the Regional Universities North Category in the 2021 United States News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings.
