School Board Of Alachua County company history timeline

1899

In 1899 construction began on a new schoolhouse to be located on a four acre site on the hill where the Alachua Elementary School is now located.

1904

Later a two story wing was added to accommodate more students when Newnansville school closed May 3, 1904.

1905

Gainesville High School is the oldest high school in Alachua County, dating back to 1905.

1916

On June 10, 1916, a delegation asked the county school board to sell bonds amounting to $15,000.00 to repair the existing building and build a new high school.

1919

In 1919, Gainesville High School was a combined elementary-secondary school that met in what is now the Kirby Smith Administration Building.

1956

In September of 1956, Lincoln High School opened at its present location of 1001 SE 12th Street (on Williston Road). Previously, Lincoln High occupied what is now the A. Quinn Jones Center, the red brick building on NW 8th Avenue.

1972

By 1972, the student population swelled to 3,175 students, and two new high schools were opened.

1980

1992

W.W. Irby Elementary opened its doors on August 28, 1992 and is named for W.W. Irby, who was an Alachua resident and a dedicated educator who served as principal at Alachua Elementary School for 28 years.

1994

In 1994, The Lyceum magnet program was started at Lincoln Middle School.
