SMART ALABAMA company history timeline

2003

SMART Alabama LLC was founded in 2003.

2004

While Saban was coaching at LSU, Smart became the defensive backs coach in 2004.

2006

Following a brief stint as the running backs coach at Georgia, Smart returned to coach under Saban as the safeties coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2006.

2007

When Saban left the Dolphins to become the head coach at Alabama in 2007, Smart followed, once again as a defensive backs coach.

2008

Entering the 2008 season, Saban promoted Smart to defensive coordinator, and Smart shined.

2011

Smart called signals for what many consider to be one of the best defenses in college football history in 2011.

2016

While his first season in 2016 was somewhat disappointing — finished 8-5 overall, his second season sure wasn’t.

2017

In just his second season at Georgia in 2017, Smart led the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship win, Rose Bowl win and a national championship berth.

2020

Smart and Saban did not have another meeting until a regular season top-three matchup in Tuscaloosa in 2020.
