The Social-Emotional Learning Intervention Associate- Spring Semester plays a vital role in providing targeted support to students in need of skill development within the Dubuque Community School District. As an AmeriCorps member, you will be responsible for implementing and promoting social-emotional learning initiatives to enhance the overall well-being and academic success of students. This role requires a compassionate, flexible, and dedicated individual who understands the importance of social-emotional development and is committed to creating a positive and welcoming learning environment. Benefits: * Education Award received upon successful completion of their term of service. * Living Allowance * Student loan forbearance and interest payments for eligible loans Job Duties Service Responsibilities: * Conduct Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions: * Provide one-on-one and small-group SEL interventions using Changemakers Curriculum. * Work closely with identified at-risk students to set goals, monitor behavior, and provide feedback and support. * Conduct SEL Interventions at least two times per week, focusing on improving social-emotional health and developing positive behavioral skills. * Conduct student observations during key times in the school day, such as classroom time, specialist time, recess, lunchtime, transition time, and before/after-school time. * Identify appropriate curriculum materials and strategies to meet the wide range of needs for the students. * Build positive connections with youth: * Develop and maintain positive relationships with at-risk youth, serving as a trusted mentor and role model. * Foster a sense of trust, confidence, and belonging among the youth through regular interactions and mentorship. * Help students develop skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, personal responsibility, goal directed behavior, decision-making and optimistic thinking. * Collect and analyze program data: * Conduct and analyze DESSA assessments and evaluations to measure students' social-emotional competencies and progress. * Collect and analyze data gathered through student observation to inform interventions and adjust strategies as needed. * Collaborate with the school's MTSS team to provide updates to administrators and teachers regarding student assessment results and ongoing skill development. * Support crisis intervention and student well-being: * Collaborate with the school's crisis response team to provide support during challenging situations. * Receive training and guidance to effectively handle de-escalation and crisis situations. * Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and AmeriCorps Members * Collaborate with teachers to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes social-emotional development. * Work closely with AmeriCorps SEL Intervention Specialist and the AmeriCorps Intervention Coordinator to share observations, student data, best practices and will collaborate on all AmeriCorps SEL Program Interventions and activities. * Participate in team meetings and maintain regular communication to ensure a cohesive and coordinated approach to addressing youth crises. * Volunteer Management: * Recruit, manage, monitor, train, and document volunteer involvement with SEL programming. * Coordinate with volunteers to support the implementation of activities and ensure a safe and supportive environment for participants. * Disaster Response (AmeriCorps-Disaster Response Team) * Participate in A-DRT training(s) to ensure the member has knowledge and ability to respond to disasters. * Complete other training necessary to support disaster deployments, including but not limited to Volunteer Reception Center (VRC), first aid, mental health first aid, and chainsaw training. Qualifications Physical Requirements: * Walk and carry materials up and down steps. * Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. * Lift 30 pounds. * Bend, squat and kneel. Desired Skills/Qualifications: * Must be competent in working with at-risk youth, teenaged youth, and communities facing barriers. * Applicant must have reliable transportation. * Applicant must be creative, energetic, dependable and a self-starter. Eligibility Criteria: * Must have a high school diploma or equivalent OR agree to obtain one while under service to the AmeriCorps Program * Be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit). * Pass a national service criminal history check prior to first day of service due to reoccurring access to vulnerable populations. * Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident. Supplemental Information Service Schedule: The Social-Emotional Learning Intervention Associate's scheduled hours may fluctuate based on student schedules throughout the school year. Typical schedule: Mon - Fri: Serve flexibly between the hours of 8am - 3pm for a minimum of 25 hours per week. Opportunities for weekend and evening hours or special events may become available during the year. Example schedule for illustrative purposes: * Monday: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Lunchbreak from 12:30-1pm * Tuesday: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Lunchbreak from 12:30-1pm * Wednesday: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Lunchbreak from 12:30-1pm * Thursday: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Lunchbreak from 12:30-1pm * Friday: 10:00am - 2:00pm, Lunchbreak from 12:30-1pm * Saturday: Off * Sunday: Off Leave:Sick leave, personal leave, and holiday leave is allowed, but such time off does not count towards the required number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service. There are additional benefits offered if the member has a compelling personal circumstance. Disaster Deployments: Member who opt-in to be engaged in disaster deployment/activities will need to ensure availability for the term of the disaster deployments, generally 2-4 weeks. Make plans for pets, family members, other employment and responsibilities that need regular attention. Evaluations and Alternative Service: AmeriCorps Members are required by the program to complete Self-Evaluations. Mid-Term Evaluations: At the member's halfway point during their term of service, the member will complete a self-evaluation and their Site Supervisor will complete an evaluation on the member through AmericaLearns. The member and site supervisor will meet, with or without Program Staff, to discuss the evaluations in-depth. These evaluations must be submitted to the AmeriCorps Program. End-Term Evaluations: Upon the completion of their AmeriCorps Contract, all members will complete an End-Term Evaluation through AmericaLearns. The End-Term Evaluation must be completed, signed, and submitted to the AmeriCorps Program within 30 days of the member's final date of service. Non-submission of this document within the 30-day timeframe will lead to the member being exited for cause (see section 9 of the Member Service Agreement) and will forfeit the member's right to the Education Award. Members may engage in other allowable activities that are not specifically outlined in the position description, but that support the AmeriCorps program design, and which will help the Program meet its goals. Under no circumstances will members be asked to perform prohibited activities. Volunteers recruited and/or managed by AmeriCorps members will not participate in prohibited activities as outlined in the approved grant application. In addition to being cabin counselors, Aquatics Program Counselors work shifts at the pool and the waterfront, providing safe and enjoyable experiences to campers and staff. POSITION AVAILABILITY:This position is an onsite, overnight position and must be available the following dates: Staff Orientation: June 14 - 24 Session 1: June 27 - 8 Session 2: July 11 - 22 Session 3: July 25 - August 5 Teen Camp and Camp Clean-up: August 8 - 13 Family Camp: August 14 - 16 BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY Live in a cabin with a co-counselor and 8 campers, and provide active supervision and attention to the physical and emotional wellbeing of campers during all on-duty hours. Provide canoe and kayak programming at the lake and maintain the quality of boating and fishing supplies in the lakefront boating shed. Complete lifeguard shifts at the pool as needed. Communicate and enforce all aquatics policies and procedures with staff and campers at the pool and waterfront. Communicate with co-counselor and supervisor appropriately to balance responsibilities as a program instructor with responsibilities of a cabin counselor. Actively participate in camp programming outside of aquatic activities including evening activities, camper choice time, bus duty, and more. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS This position is compensated at a rate of $700 per week, pre-tax. This position is eligible for a $50 weekly bonus for valid lifeguard certification during weeks worked. Summer seasonal staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis and are classified as exempt, seasonal employees. All meals are provided during camp sessions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES A belief that with the right support and access to quality programs and experiences, all young people are able to achieve at the highest level imaginable. Possess strong communications skills and apply them with coworkers and supervisors, maintaining confidentiality of sensitive staff and camper information when necessary. Ability to perform job duties in a fast-paced environment and able to embrace change and be flexible. Ability to pass the Shallow-water Lifeguard Course. EDUCATIONAL, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSING REQUIREMENTS Current Shallow-water Lifeguard Certification (PEAK can support in attaining). Must be at least 18 and/or have a high school diploma/GED before the position start date to apply. REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS The Boating Program Counselor reports to the Aquatics Coordinator. PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS The mental and physical requirements and work environment conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Staff are required to actively participate in all camper activities, including water-related activities. Staff must be ready for new experiences and maintain a consistent level of energy all summer long. Position requires standing, stooping, sitting, walking long distances on uneven terrain (5+ miles a day), and occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds with or without assistance. Camp activities are often loud, involving many people talking, yelling, cheering, etc., in indoor and outdoor settings. The camp environment is often hot, rainy, with bugs or other wildlife. Staff must be able to work outside in a nature setting for sustained periods of time without air conditioning. All PEAK Initiative properties, including Lake Valley Camp and the Milwaukee Program Center, are substance-free environments. Smoking, vaping, alcohol consumption, and the use of illicit drugs are strictly prohibited on all property regardless of whether or not staff are on break. Staff must be able to walk and perform activities in the dark in an outdoor, nature setting. Staff must be able to sleep in a tent outdoors. Staff must be able to eat in a dining hall setting with 100+ people. The dining hall will be very busy and very noisy during these times and staff are expected to supervise and sit with their cabins throughout the meals. Staff must be able to eat family style meals in a dining hall for 3 meals a day. Sample menus available upon request. With pre-summer notice, the kitchen can accommodate most medical or value-based dietary restrictions. Position requires working weekends and nights, with time off in between camp sessions. Camp days are often long and at times require late night camper support, especially for Leadership Team Members and Health Staff. Staff will have daily scheduled breaks. Staff will have a combination of work and on call hours for up to 22 hours a day for several consecutive days. Staff must be able to reside in shared housing on the LVC overnight camp property in Boscobel, WI starting with staff training in June and ending after the last camp program lets out in mid-August. Staff must be able to live and sleep in housing with campers. Cabins have electricity, but no plumbing. Staff and campers are required to use communal bath houses located within the village.
