The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is responsible for performing the routine test on blood, tissues, and other body specimens, as well as providing physicians with quality results using a variety of clinical laboratory equipment. The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) must have a total understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques necessary to guarantee complete patient safety and anonymity.
**Essential Functions:**
+ Performs analytical tests on biological specimens, in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures
+ Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal/ unusual results
+ Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results by taking the appropriate action according to protocols
+ Performs quality control for all testing and meets established ranges before patient results are released
+ Maintains a safe and efficient work environment by performing equipment checks, cleaning work area, monitoring temperatures following hospital policies, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment
+ Other duties as assigned
**Education:**
+ Bachelor of Science in one of the following: Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Biology or Biochemistry through a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved program (required)

Job Description
The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant collects patient specimens, prepares samples for testing, and enters required information into the Laboratory Information System. This role also supports reference lab testing, provides reports and information as needed, and performs assigned Point-of-Care (POC) testing.

Performing venipuncture and collecting patient and occasional employee blood samples in accordance with safety guidelines.
Conducting waived and Point-of-Care (POC) testing, entering and verifying results in the LIS.

Preparing, packaging, and sending specimens to reference laboratories, and scanning results into the appropriate systems.

Assisting with inventory and general clerical duties.
Maintaining up-to-date phlebotomy skills, equipment knowledge, and safety practices.
Obtaining additional non-blood specimens (e.g., throat, nasopharyngeal, urine) as needed.
Remaining proficient in laboratory systems such as Athena, 4Medica, and Meditech.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma and an approved phlebotomy program or 4-5 years relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Related Work Experience: 2 years previous pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.

**Job Description:**
**Sign On Bonus up to $5,000**
**Schedule** : Full time
**Shift:** Nights 3 12 hour shifts 7pm-7am
2 nights at 50 Hospital Drive in Hendersonville, 1 night at Parkway in Asheville at 333 Gashes Creek Rd, Suite 111, Asheville, 28803
+ Performs polysomnography procedures according to physician orders, department policy, and patient care plans.
+ Adapts all needed testing procedures and equipment to patients and obtains quality data. Conducts thorough patient assessments and takes appropriate action as necessary.
+ Uses hospital equipment, supplies, and resources responsibly and notifies the lead polysomnographer of any concerns.
+ Follows procedures for correct billing and documentation of services provided. Strives to achieve reliability scores at a prescribed rate.
+ Explains and modifies teaching strategies to accommodate patients with decreased vision, hearing, or mental status.
+ Addresses considerations necessary for the care of patients with special medical conditions.

High School Grad or Equiv (Required) Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) - EV Accredited Issuing Body

Promotes positive patient interactions and advocates for patients and family-centered care in all decisions and actions. Participates in polysomnography educational opportunities and maintains required continuing education hours. Maintains confidentiality and promotes the dignity of customers and associates. Attends department meetings and participates in performance improvement initiatives. Other duties as assigned.
