Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a consulting biologist with a minimum of 10 years of experience to join our southern California Ecosystems Group by operating out of our San Diego, California office. We welcome a talented and collaborative team member with demonstrable experience in southern California and elsewhere. As a Senior-level Biologist with Stantec, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, and land planning and regulatory experts. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work; it may also involve field work during construction of projects and implementation of ecosystem restoration projects. In this position, you will be responsible for the contribution and management of multi-disciplinary project teams in all phases of the execution and delivery of siting and licensing of energy production, including renewable energy, and electric and gas transmission projects, as well as natural resource planning and management projects. As a Senior Biologist, you will oversee and provide expertise in field biology, regulatory strategy, CEQA/NEPA analysis, and permitting strategy. Specific background and expertise should consist of strong botanical, wetland, or wildlife technical expertise, familiarity and experience with regulatory permitting, and project and client management. This position requires coordination with clients, resource agencies, and environmental and technical staff.
What You Will Do for Stantec
As a Senior Biologist:
* You will manage projects, supervise staff, lead and mentor project field teams, and provide support to other project managers undertaking renewable energy, oil and gas, and other development projects.
* You will schedule, assist, and/or lead teams for field tasks, as needed, such as botanical surveys, special-status species surveys/inventories, nesting bird surveys, vegetation community assessments and mapping, jurisdictional waters delineations and assessments, and compliance monitoring.
* You will provide guidance to junior staff, including providing training recommendations, coaching, and mentoring.
* You will plan, prepare, and review technical reports or portions of larger environmental assessments.
* You will work with business development teams and lead efforts to respond to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) including defining the scope of work, associated cost, and compiling relevant sections of proposal documents
* You will contribute to our corporate profile through active participation in professional associations and committees
* You will coordinate with clients and regulators to communicate results of various survey efforts and technical reports.
* You will lead development of permitting strategies, permit application packages, and agency negotiations.
* You will assist teams and lead efforts in pursuing and contributing to new business opportunities and effective technical proposals.
* The role has a target 75-80% direct project utilization goal.
* Occasional overnight travel may be required within and outside of southern California.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
You are a biologist or natural resources management specialist and have a minimum 10 years of related experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility in conducting biological resources surveys and preparing technical reports. Your skills should include:
* Demonstrable experience in all aspects of project management, biological impact assessment and mitigation strategy development, and preparation and review of biological resources documents.
* Demonstrable experience in providing strong support and collaboration in delivering high quality work products to multi-disciplinary project teams within project scope, budget and schedule expectations.
* Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and organizational skills.
* Business development acumen with established relationships with clients and regulatory agency staff and/or the capability of successfully developing and maintaining these relationships.
* Significant experience in reviewing and analyzing scientific data, maps, and drawings with strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
* Significant demonstrable background, knowledge, and experience with the flora, fauna, and vegetative communities of southern California; experience in other areas of California, including desert regions and elsewhere will be considered a plus.
* Significant experience in conducting floristic botanical surveys, reconnaissance wildlife surveys, and species-specific protocol surveys; experience/permits with Chino checkerspot butterfly, arroyo toad, burrowing owl, coastal California gnatcatcher, least Bell's vireo, southwestern willow flycatcher, Mohave ground squirrel, small mammal trapping, and/or desert tortoise will be considered a plus.
* Significant experience in preparing technical documentation including biological survey reports, technical memoranda, Biological Resources Technical Reports (BRTRs), jurisdictional waters delineations and Aquatic Resources Delineation Reports (ARDRs), and/or biological resources sections for CEQA/NEPA documents
* Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and processes, particularly in southern California, such as:- California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act (CEQA/NEPA)
* Federal and California Endangered Species Act (FESA/CESA)
* Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (MBTA/BGEPA)
* Clean Water Act (CWA)
* Porter-Cologne Act
* California Fish and Game Code (FGC)
* California Coastal Act and Local Coastal Programs (CCA/LCPs)
* Significant experience in preparation of regulatory permit applications such as Clean Water Act Section 404/401, Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs), Fish and Game Code Section 1600 Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements, and/or federal/state Incidental Take Permits (ITPs).
* Demonstrated experience leading environmental permitting of energy facilities, pipelines, and/or linear infrastructure projects in the western United States.
* Demonstrated technical competence and project experience in natural resource fields applicable to commercial (primarily conventional or renewable energy generation/transmission) siting and licensing or environmental permitting of other infrastructure projects.
* Experience in working on construction projects, compliance monitoring, environmental training, interpretation and application of regulatory requirements, and post-construction monitoring/reporting on small to large projects.
* Experience with using GPS/GIS technology to collect biological survey data, map vegetation communities, and/or delineate jurisdictional waters.
* Possession of a California Scientific Collecting Permit, State Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and or federal Recovery Permit for special-status species will be considered a plus.
* Wetland delineation training certificate will be considered aplus.
* Must have ability to occasionally travel.
* Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
* A medical physical and/or drug and alcohol screening may be required for some project assignments.
* OSHA HAZWOPER 40 certification is a plus.
Education and Experience
BS (MS degree preferred) in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field with minimum of 10 years of experience.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.

The Senior Paleontologist will work as part of a dynamic team that is based in Southern California but includes staff members across the United States. Stantec Paleontology is one of the largest paleontological mitigation programs in the country, holding numerous statewide Bureau of Land Management and project-specific United States Forest Service and National Park Service paleontological permits. Our team includes over 30 paleontologists, including field technicians and directors, fossil preparators, and principal investigators. Stantec supports a wide range of paleontology projects, from multi-state transmission and pipeline projects to road improvements, solar fields, private development, and more. We offer support through all stages of permitting and development, including preconstruction surveys and assessments, construction mitigation programs, and fossil treatment. Our Monrovia, California and Denver, Colorado offices include fossil preparation workspaces, with museum-quality preparation equipment.
Within this team, the Senior Paleontologist will direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients and is responsible for overseeing project development, direction, coordination, and quality control, under the guidance of the Principal Paleontologist. Additionally, the Senior Paleontologist will train staff, oversee field directors, produce quality reports, manage multiple projects and budgets, author proposals and participate in marketing, as required.
Your Key Responsibilities
* Preparation and review of paleontological technical reports, CEQA/NEPA documents, impact mitigation plans, and annual permit reports.
* Preparation of cost proposals including budgets and scopes of work.
* Project management: implementation of projects from kickoff to completion, including client and agency coordination, project scheduling, coordination of support staff, and budget management.
Implementation of resource impact mitigation measures including monitoring and fossil collection projects of all types and sizes.
* Participation in and logistical planning for field projects from inception to completion across the western US.
* Supervision and training of field crews, management and QA/QC of field data, and coordination with land management agencies and clients.
* Detailed and accurate field data collection (including ability to collect data using table computers and
* Trimble GPS units) with an emphasis on stratigraphic documentation of project sites and fossil localities therein.

Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
* Demonstrated professional experience and competency with paleontological resource mitigation procedures and techniques.
* Meet federal qualifications as a paleontological permittee (43 Code of Federal Regulations Part 49.110)
* Working knowledge of how paleontological resources and their associated data are used in conducting and publishing professional paleontological research.
* Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and procedures that apply to all aspects of mitigation paleontology.
* Candidates must be motivated team members, possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and are ready to make a commitment to professional excellence.
* Field experience in sedimentary geology and paleontology.
* Fossil preparation and museum curation experience.
* Project management experience.
* Ability to work independently and as an integral part of a team.

Education and Experience
Possession of graduate level academic training (M.S. or Ph.D.) in paleontology and sedimentary geology or equivalent professional experience.

Qualifications

An understanding of and practical experience with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and related state and local regulations and guidelines preferred;

As a Principal-level Biologist with Stantec, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, and wider multidisciplinary team. This will be a leadership role providing direction and mentorship for junior team members, project management, and responsibility for driving business development. This position will primarily entail office work but may include limited opportunities for field work.

Your Opportunity
Stantec's Water practice in Santa Barbara, California is seeking a highly motivated Water/Wastewater Engineer to join our successful team working on iconic projects as a Project Technical Lead (PTL). In the Water Business Line, the PTL is accountable for work production on the project and coordinating all multi-disciplinary activities and inputs by the technical team to ensure an integrated technical solution is achieved and that the quality of all technical outputs has been confirmed by an independent review. Primary responsibilities include project delivery and design management for water and wastewater treatment and conveyance projects. We are looking for someone with experience in the evaluation, planning, design and construction administration of water, recycled water, and/or wastewater infrastructure projects including alternatives analysis; treatment plant, pump station, and pipeline design; engineering services during construction; and project management. Your Key Responsibilities
Promote of Stantec's project delivery structure that includes Project Managers and Project Technical Leads.
Provide technical guidance and leadership in the development of innovative technical solutions for water and/or wastewater projects.
Manage and execute conventional design-bid-build and alternate delivery of new and existing water, recycled water, and wastewater treatment and conveyance projects.
Direct the work of, communicate effectively, and coordinate with project teams including multiple disciplines (drafters, designers, and other engineers).
Develop and prepare reports, planning studies, specifications, calculations, detailed design drawings, construction submittal reviews, models and other technical deliverables for treatment, conveyance, and infrastructure related projects.
Communicate effectively and coordinate with clients on projects during planning, design, and construction.
Support Stantec's reputation for innovation and research through participation in California conferences, professional associations, and academic partnerships.
Mentor young professionals in the California offices.
Work effectively in partnership with BC leadership, the Project Pursuit teams and PMs, and proactively coordinate activities undertaken by project teams in both local and remote offices.
Understand and proactively satisfy client's needs and expectations.
Ensure activities are planned and completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Working inclusively with the client, stakeholders, the PM and the project team.
Connect the Client, PM, independent reviewers and the project team to the project's technical solutions.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
Experience organizing, planning, and executing water and/or wastewater treatment and/or conveyance designs from pursuit to design and construction.
Experience leading, coordinating, and managing multidisciplinary teams involving internal personnel, subconsultants, vendors, and suppliers.
Experience with collaborative delivery projects working with contractors and vendors.
Strong client service, project management, and/or design management skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Stantec's is currently seeking a Staff Geologist or Scientist to support our team of professionals on environmental site assessment, remediation projects, and groundwater monitoring and stormwater compliance. This role requires an individual who is highly motivated, has the ability to problem-solve, can use critical thinking skills, is quick-learning, communicative, and detail-oriented, and who is ready to develop and take on the responsibilities of a field geologist/scientist who works well independently.
This role requires a focus on field work experience with primary responsibilities that entail executing assignments associated with environmental site assessments, investigations, and remediation; environmental compliance inspections and surveys; oversight of drilling activities and logging soils; sampling of environmental media such as soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater; stormwater and non-stormwater discharge sampling. Preference for in-office skills to digitize soil logs, maps, lithological cross-sections, and technical writing skills. Your Key Responsibilities
* Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including OSHA required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.
* Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete entry level and routine assignments.
* Performing outdoor, all-season, on-site geological and environmental investigation work at sites ranging from commercial/industrial sites to open and remote spaces. Expectation of 70% field to 30% office-based ratio of supporting multiple projects.
* Conducting subsurface geologic investigations in connection with evaluation of various media (soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater).
* Responsible for fieldwork including coordination of subcontractors, completing utility clearance for ground disturbance locations, oversight of drilling by subcontractors (hand auger, direct push, hollow-stem auger, air vacuum), oversight of soil excavations by subcontractors, installation of soil vapor probes, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, performing hand auger drilling, soil logging, trench logging, surface water and stormwater sampling, collection of environmental samples (soil, sediment, soil vapor, groundwater, ambient air), and preparation of daily field documentation of health and safety and field activities.
* Assist with preparation of work plans, sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports (soil and groundwater assessment, remedial excavations, well destruction, Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments).
* Assist with preparation of final soil boring logs, cross-sections, trench logs, and other report supporting documentation.
* Assist with review and interpretation of environmental data.
* Prepare permit applications for soil borings, well installations and destruction.
* Attention to detail in note taking and documenting daily field activities and communicate daily with the project team.
* Reports to Senior Project Manager or Project Director.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
* 40-Hour HAZWOPER.
* Some projects may require successful completion of background LiveScan check/fingerprinting.

* A clean, valid Class C driver's license is required for this position, and familiarity with driving larger vehicles (pickup trucks) and driving off-road is preferred.

Pay Range:
* Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA areas - Min Salary $ 63,200.00 - Max Salary $ 88,500.00
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
