Your Opportunity The Senior Paleontologist will work as part of a dynamic team that is based in Southern California but includes staff members across the United States. Stantec Paleontology is one of the largest paleontological mitigation programs in the country, holding numerous statewide Bureau of Land Management and project-specific United States Forest Service and National Park Service paleontological permits. Our team includes over 30 paleontologists, including field technicians and directors, fossil preparators, and principal investigators. Stantec supports a wide range of paleontology projects, from multi-state transmission and pipeline projects to road improvements, solar fields, private development, and more. We offer support through all stages of permitting and development, including preconstruction surveys and assessments, construction mitigation programs, and fossil treatment. Our Monrovia, California and Denver, Colorado offices include fossil preparation workspaces, with museum-quality preparation equipment. Within this team, the Senior Paleontologist will direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients and is responsible for overseeing project development, direction, coordination, and quality control, under the guidance of the Principal Paleontologist. Additionally, the Senior Paleontologist will train staff, oversee field directors, produce quality reports, manage multiple projects and budgets, author proposals and participate in marketing, as required. Your Key Responsibilities * Preparation and review of paleontological technical reports, CEQA/NEPA documents, impact mitigation plans, and annual permit reports. * Preparation of cost proposals including budgets and scopes of work. * Project management: implementation of projects from kickoff to completion, including client and agency coordination, project scheduling, coordination of support staff, and budget management. Implementation of resource impact mitigation measures including monitoring and fossil collection projects of all types and sizes. * Participation in and logistical planning for field projects from inception to completion across the western US. * Supervision and training of field crews, management and QA/QC of field data, and coordination with land management agencies and clients. * Detailed and accurate field data collection (including ability to collect data using table computers and * Trimble GPS units) with an emphasis on stratigraphic documentation of project sites and fossil localities therein. * Participation in and supervision of existing data analyses including museum and agency record searches, geologic map reviews, and literature-based research. * Assistance with marketing and business development efforts. * Adherence to ethical business practices, professional standards, laws and regulations, and best practices in mitigation paleontology. Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials * Demonstrated professional experience and competency with paleontological resource mitigation procedures and techniques. * Meet federal qualifications as a paleontological permittee (43 Code of Federal Regulations Part 49.110) * Working knowledge of how paleontological resources and their associated data are used in conducting and publishing professional paleontological research. * Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and procedures that apply to all aspects of mitigation paleontology. * Candidates must be motivated team members, possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and are ready to make a commitment to professional excellence. * Field experience in sedimentary geology and paleontology. * Fossil preparation and museum curation experience. * Project management experience. * Ability to work independently and as an integral part of a team. * Must have good driving record and a valid driver's license. As a Principal-level Biologist with Stantec, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, and wider multidisciplinary team. Your Opportunity Stantec is currently seeking a Senior or Principal Environmental Planner to join our Southern California Planning Group and broader Environmental Services Business Line. The Planning Group is comprised of environmental planners and scientists, regulatory specialists, and project managers providing environmental planning, permitting, environmental impact analysis, and permit condition/mitigation compliance services. The practice focuses on management of multi-agency jurisdictions involving diverse environmental resources constraints throughout all phases of a project life cycle. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of broad professional environmental experience and regulatory knowledge with an emphasis on environmental planning; project management and business development. Job responsibilities include leading a team of junior through senior-level planners, staff mentorship and training, workload balancing, coordination with other discipline teams and business operating units, leading and preparing proposals, environmental impact analysis documentation and related technical studies, discretionary permit applications, managing projects, and supervising staff. This position offers the selected individual the ability to apply their operational, technical, project management, and business development experience to a diverse range of projects and clients across California, as well as professional development opportunities within an established and rapidly growing consulting organization. Your Key Responsibilities The primary duties of this role are to: * Manage and assist with technical delivery of environmental services related projects across a diverse range of market sectors that leads to an expected 60% direct utilization * Primary point-of-contact for planning-related pursuits, inputs to operational and business planning efforts, conferences and training, hiring and resourcing needs * Establish and maintain a peer network of planners that fosters an environment of shared learning, information sharing, and collaboration * Liaise with the Southern California and Northern California planning teams as well as other Environmental Services groups to identify and enhance regional business development opportunities, develop proposals, and facilitate cross selling of services * Track and manage the planning group's overall utilization in collaboration with supervisors including identifying key leads and support staff for new pursuits and opportunities for workload balancing * Identify and coordinate planning staff participation in professional societies, conferences, and stakeholder events related to planning, technical delivery and marketing/business development responsibilities * Support training and mentorship related to planning-related deliverables, technical standards and industry best practices in coordination with Stantec's Technical Area Leader and National Technical Leadership * Support the growth of the business center through strategic hiring, professional development, as well as employee engagement and retention strategies * Assist in the development, communication, and management of key performance indicators for team utilization, safety, and quality * Project management responsibilities include client interfacing, interdisciplinary coordination, oversight of safety requirements, subconsultant management, team coordination/meetings, delegation and oversight of technical tasks, preparation and quality review of deliverables, budget forecasting and monitoring, and invoicing * Project management and technical delivery is expected to include discretionary environmental permitting, California Environmental Quality Act/National Environmental Policy Act documentation, environmental technical studies, similar regulatory compliance services, and representation at stakeholder meetings/public hearings * Lead and support successful marketing and business development activities including opportunity identification, pre-positioning, preparation of proposals, interviews, and contracting * Manage client services including routine correspondence/meetings, opportunity capitalization, negotiation of commercial terms, health and safety metric reporting, feedback solicitation, and advocacy facilitation * Promote a strong health and safety culture Your Capabilities and Credentials * Position requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, good organization skills and a passion for people management and high quality of work * Excellent analytic and communication skills, both written and verbal * Ability to successfully communicate through multiple means including telephone/ teleconferences, email, and in-person meetings.
