CNC Machinists will be responsible for performing multiple tasks to support the fabrication of locomotive/mining components. In addition to machining, you will have responsibility for assembling components and other duties as assigned. Machinists are responsible for working together as a team to improve manufacturing processes and promote a climate of cooperation.
CNC Machinist may include but is not limited to the following:
Understand and perform all functions required to set up and operate a variety of CNC and /or manual machining equipment including but not limited to: 4 axis vertical lathes, horizontal boring machines, gear hobber, gear grinder, cylindrical grinder, radial arm drill and coordinate measuring machines
Use standard machine tools including, but not limited to drill press, band saw, lathe, press breaks, welding equipment etc., and a variety of hand, electric, and pneumatic tools
Change and adjust tools as required to maintain quality
Set up both fixtures and parts for machining
De-burr parts
Use manual and electronic inspection devices to check multiple quality parameters
Set up and perform simple welding operations
Other Duties
Promote climate of cooperation; leading by example mentoring others in safety, quality, environmental, lean and high performance work team philosophies
Work with all facility employees on improving manufacturing processes through prototyping, fabrication and experimental machining to develop and prove concepts and design and implement necessary fixtures and tooling for manufacturing improvements
Assembly of components and full assembly of finished parts
Paint applications including but not limited to dry sanding, masking, unmasking, primer paint application, seal and touch up work
Material transport including the use of but not limited to, radio controlled cranes, forklifts and tuggers
Prying and setting heavy equipment may also be required
All machinists will perform multiple tasks in any combination and concentration of the above-mentioned areas and will rotate through all or most of the processes rather than being assigned to a specific task. Machinist must be able to work as part of a team having responsibility for assembling numerous components and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Basic Requirements
Starting Pay is $33.87/hr (up to $34.97/hr after 6-month progression and $36.07/hr at 4 years of service) with night shift differential of $1/hr when working 2nd shift hours.
Available shifts:
4 day, 10 hour work week: 4-day (Monday through Thursday), 10-hour shift work week. Shift hours are 3:15PM - 1:45AM (2nd Shift). Must be able to work scheduled shift hours.
1-year CNC Machining experience
Minimum of 1 year of experience using blue prints and manufacturing instructions to produce machined parts.
Must be able to lift material up to 40 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must have ability to properly use and care for assigned tools and equipment.
Must be able to adhere to standards, do a quality job in a safe manner, within allotted time.
Must have basic computer skills.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment technical assessment.
Every employee will be an in-process inspector.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must have high-school diploma or GED or equivalent.
Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment, for example safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs and safety shoes.
Must be willing to work in a tobacco-free environment.
Be willing to take a drug test & submit to a background check as part of the selection process.
Be willing to submit to random drug tests.

Must be willing to work as necessary to meet requirements of the position, including the ability to work occasional weekends and scheduled overtime.

Purpose:
The Machinist II, under general supervision serves as the lead machinist for the mechanical engineering department in the joint machine shop shared with the physics department and the mechanical engineering rapid prototyping studio. Will instruct and supervise mechanical engineering students on safe use of equipment and will provide assistance to the staff and students regarding fabrication of parts. Fabricates, maintains, and repairs metal parts, tools, and equipment.
Responsibilities:
Leads training sessions on manual shop equipment, CNC machines, and related software.
Provides technical assistance to students, staff, and faculty.
Provides instructional support to undergraduate students in the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio.
Performs semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature.
Manufactures parts from steel, aluminum, or other materials from drawings, prints, or from verbal instruction to a required tolerance.
Manufactures parts consisting of gears, all makes of threads, shafts, adaptors, jigs, and fixtures to very close tolerances.
Manufactures, fits, and assembles parts.
Orders parts for machine shop use.
Provides support to laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on lab equipment.
Other duties as assigned
