The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior level) custodial work. Responsibilities include performing, coordinating, cleaning, and sanitizing state supported living center buildings and resident homes; providing housekeeping services in a residential setting, which also involves conducting inspections of the buildings and equipment. The Custodian III orders and restocks supplies and equipment and provides backup to other custodians as needed. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Essential Job Functions (EJFs): Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility. Maintains cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment, and maintains records of the supplies used, and building property maintenance tools/equipment. Ensures proper usage and maintenance, and if necessary, minor repairs on buildings and equipment (i.e., buffers, waxing machines, biohazard disposal units, vacuums, etc.). Ensures custodial supplies are restocked. Coordinates and performs the cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting restrooms, all office surfaces/furniture, programming areas, residents' homes, and bedrooms, and other SSLC areas, utilizing cleaning chemicals as needed; and ensures all waste/trash is collected and disposed of regularly. Ensures all resident homes/units meet or exceed the minimum standard guidelines for cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control. Inspects the buildings and identifies any problem areas in need of follow up, and ensures follow-up occurs. Assists the Custodian Manager in implementing the overall safety and infection control program. Oversees the work of Custodians I and II staff as needed and assists the Custodial Manager in providing training and coaching to these staff. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures to include how to dust, sweep and mop. Knowledge of how to strip and wax floors. Knowledge of how to clean and disinfect restrooms and shower stalls. Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods. Skills in the use of custodial materials and chemicals, and in the operation of custodial equipment. Skills in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions. Ability to stay on task and complete work timely. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods. Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients. Ability to work irregular hours. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications: Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Screening Criteria: Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is preferred. At least six (6) months paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work is required; one (1) year paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work is preferred. One (1) year experience working in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders is preferred. Additional Information: Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE). The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Performs moderately complex custodial work for assigned locations including office buildings, premises and/or resident living units. Cleans, dusts, disinfects, and sanitizes to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Operates floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums and extractors. Requests and restocks supplies as necessary. Assists in conducting inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs. Assists in performing minor building and equipment repairs and installations. Trains other custodians as needed. Accountable for maintaining assigned custodial equipment in good working order. Maintains outside areas around building, clears trash and debris. Performs related work as assigned including assuming the duties of other custodians as needed. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Essential Job Functions (EJFs): Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility. Performs custodial functions timely and with high quality including sweeping, mopping, dusting and cleaning windows and light fixtures. Ensures proper sanitization and disinfection in accordance with training received. Cleans and maintains floor care, restroom care, bedroom care, nurses' station and isolation areas in accordance with established procedures and safety measures. Maintains and cleans the interior and exterior of assigned buildings. Reports needed repairs. Empties trash. Replenishes supplies as needed. Trains and coaches other custodians as needed, and provides documentation of any training conducted. Inspects assigned buildings and areas for cleanliness, completed work and needed minor repairs, and performs minor maintenance. Completes documentation in an accurate and timely manner. Protects confidential information. Maintains inventory and equipment records. Helps residents maintain optimal health and provides a safe environment for self, persons served and others. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations. Knowledge of infection control principles and methods. Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods. Skill in use of custodial equipment, materials and the safe handling chemicals. Skill in use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to train others. Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended period. Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and residents. Ability to work irregular hours. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications: Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Screening Criteria: One of the following is required: Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent; Paid work experience in any field; or Unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience. Preferred: Six months of experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or other similar residential equivalent. Additional Information: Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18 - 25 must be registered with the Selective Service. All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing. Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
