Under the direction of clinical leadership and in collaboration with the program support team, coordinates the care of patients through the disease process. Acts as a clinical liaison for patients, across medical services and clinical departments. Assesses clinical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial, financial, and other patient needs. Evaluates and manages patient symptoms before during and after treatment.

* Acts as liaison for patients, families and their multidisciplinary clinical team.
* Assesses clinical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial, financial, and other patient needs.
* Facilitates resolution to patient needs and monitors follow up.
* Educates/reinforces education with patients and families on disease, treatments, side effects, adverse reactions, and reportable signs/symptoms based on multidisciplinary care plan.
* Coordinates discharge planning with the patient's family, social workers, home nursing staff, oncologists, and personal physicians.
* Works with patients and family members to ensure discharge instructions are understood and followed.
* Develops and/or coordinates development of patient education materials, clinical pathways, and quality studies.
* Coordinates and/or participates in multidisciplinary consultations and/or tumor conference.
* Documents recommendations made at multidisciplinary consultations and/or tumor conferences.
* Helps develop a treatment plan that is understandable and feasible to the patient.
* Serves as clinical partner and escalation point for Intake Coordinators.
* Promotes community education and increases prevention awareness and early-detection screening programs.
* May be responsible for direct patient care
* Performs other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with a current Illinois license.
* Graduate of a National League for Nursing accredited School of Nursing with BSN
* Minimum of two years hematology/oncology clinical nursing experience with demonstrated clinical competence in patient care, teaching and management of patients with a cancer diagnosis, and knowledge about clinical aspects of oncology including protocol therapy and data management.
* Must have general computer skills and be adaptable to changing working situations and work assignments.

We provide outpatient care at 6 off-site locations; medical therapy (chemotherapy and targeted agents) as well as phase I-III clinical trials are offered at 4 of our 6 off-site locations. The section of gynecologic oncology is among the largest disease site teams within the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC).
Job Summary
This position requires oncologynurse navigation (ONN) experience as well as expertise with clinical research. Our research program is one of the largest gynecologic oncology programs in the Midwest, with an average of 18-22 therapeutic phase phase I-III trials open at all-times. We need a clinical nurse leader with expertise in micro-systems problem solving to work closely with our section chief, nurse manager, and departmental leadership to develop pathways and processes that optimize efficient trial initiation, patient enrollment and safe, protocol-compliant care across all of our clinical sites. It is expected that this nurse leader will establish close professional relationships with hospital nursing and cancer center leadership, and use content and process knowledge gained in these interactions to subsequently support main campus and off-site care-teams teams with mentorship and coaching in best practices and safe clinical research conduct.
The job has deep knowledge and expertise within a Nursing specialty. Establishes plans for the safe distribution of medications. Uses specialized depth and breadth of experience in Healthcare issues to direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with consulting physician and multidisciplinary health teams.
Responsibilities
Provides in-services on complex Phase I trial protocols (e.g. - cell therapy infusions).
Provides collaborative lead nursing support for ONNs at 4 clinical sites.
Works with clinical trials program physician leadership and UCCCC Clinical Trials Support Office (CTSO) to increase trial accruals, shape trials program development.
Supports development of clinical standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Gynecology Oncology ONNs and PAs.
Coordinates clinical trial protocol in-service education for IVTH units at 4 sites (DCAM, Orland Park, Silver Cross, Crown Point).
Leads work to standardize patient-facing chemotherapy and surgery education; works with program manager to facilitate and disseminate education tools via meetings and shared information platform.
Acts as primary liaison to Hematology Oncologynurse educator, nursing Unit Based Council (UBC) and IVTH leadership at (4) infusion sites related to patient safety and workflow.
Monitor and makes recommendations to RN workload evaluations.
Maintains very limited direct patient care ONN clinic support.
Partners in the coordination of new hire onboarding / training for Gynecologic OncologyNurse Navigators.
Improves education documentation processes /conducts compliance audits (QOPI standards).
Performs other related work as needed including capped direct patient care when critical staffing shortages occur.
Leads comprehensive or episodic health assessments. Solves complex problems in patient care and recommends appropriate treatments. Develops patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols and prepares patient health summaries.
Collaborates with and provides expertise to nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources for coordination of patient care. Selects appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
Requires specialized depth of knowledge and skills for professional development. Interprets quality assurance issues on the unit, and recommends best practices. Provides expertise to staff on or off the unit for clinical skills.
Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:

The Infusion centers are staffed by a very experienced team of physicians, pharmacists and registered nurses who are trained in Chemotherapy treatments. Our team provides outpatient IV therapy to patients with a multitude of conditions, including all forms of prescribed chemotherapy. Patients receive infusion therapies in a peaceful and friendly environment. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Infusion Nurse functions as an interactive resource in clinical nursing and professional practice. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the coordinating of and performing direct nursing care for patients, utilizing concepts of the nursing process. Serves as resource, preceptor, mentor, and leader for physicians, professional peers and other fellow employees.
Essential Job Functions:
Maintains an environment which is characterized by trust, acceptance, recognition and respect; actively supports the vision, philosophy, mission, goals and objectives of the hospital
Functions as an interactive resource in clinical and professional practice and is responsible for designing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating patient care and utilizing the concepts of the nursing process.
Initiates assessment on admission, including psychosocial, physical, spiritual, emotional, and education/ discharge needs of the patient and family or significant other.
Identifies discharge planning needs from the nursing history, creates discharge plan, and initiates appropriate referral.
Sets priorities for nursing action, in a logical sequence according to patient's needs and formulates an appropriate yet individualized plan of care designed to achieve desired patient outcomes.
Delegates tasks effectively to all levels of staff based on their scope of practice, job description, ability, and patient care center needs.
Responsible for and provides patient/significant other education, based on identified educational needs.
Understands growth and development and responds effectively to the unique needs of specific patient populations.
Provides therapeutic & diagnostic treatments within scope of practice; maintains clinical competency as appropriate.
Interprets and represents Ingalls Hospital philosophy, policies, procedures and patient rights and responsibilities to patients and their families.
Assists in referring patient to appropriate services and resources.
Orients patients to the department and in-house resources.
Collaborates with professional peers and provides participative supervision and leadership for Care Team Members in managing patient care and clinical practice.
Coordinates patient care services with the physicians and other professional disciplines.
Responsible for meeting regulatory bodies' requirements for clinical practice, patient care and
performance improvement.
Participates in performance improvement through tool development, data collection, analysis, developing and/or implementing action plans for improvement.
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Current RN Licensure State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation or valid temporary
permit to practice nursing in the State of Illinois.
Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
Minimum of one year full time experience in an outpatient ambulatory infusion or oncologynursing strongly preferred.
Must possess excellent organization and communication skills. Must be flexible as some evening and weekend hours will be required.
Must possess knowledge regarding use and care of venous access devices such as implantable and peripherally inserted catheters.
Must possess excellent venipuncture and IV start skills.
ONS or INS certification desired.
Preferred skills:
Completion of ONS Chemo-Biotherapy Course within 12 months, unless holds current ONS or INS certification.

This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs
Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients
Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients
Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned by Care Center Director or Patient Care Manager
Provides support to peers by assisting as needed, being a resource person and working as a team member
Assists Care Center in development/attainment of goals and objectives
Uses clinical pathways and/or plans of care incorporating standards of practice
Assesses own need for professional growth and development and seeks appropriate resources to meeting needs
Attends continuing education programs and participates in program evaluation
Required Qualifications
Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing
Associate Degree in Nursing
Associate degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program
Current Illinois RN license
Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
ACLS/PALS within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
BSN degree or higher
2 years of ICU experience

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
